Today I felt pretty, put together, neat and “my old self” - for a few hours before my hair was up in a bun and my dress was flung off for something more comfortable to breastfeed in!🤭 . . Born on this day #MarkRothko In his mature work, Rothko abandoned specific reference to nature in order to paint images with universal associations. By the late 1940s he had developed a style in which hazy, luminous rectangles float within a vertical format. Rothko wrote that the great artistic achievements of the past were pictures of the human figure alone in a moment of utter immobility. He sought to create his own version of this solitary meditative experience, scaling his pictures so that the viewer is enveloped in their subtly shifting, atmospheric surface. In 1959 Rothko visited Terry Frost and Peter Lanyon in Cornwall and was introduced to Paul Feiler. The following year Frost exhibited in New York, meeting artists associated with modern American painting and maintaining a friendship and correspondence with Rothko. Happy Thursday, University of Washington Tacoma! Heres another #UWTThenandNow featuring the Science Building, the slightly obvious home to all things SCIENCE at UWT. Find out more about the history of the building which houses most of the classrooms and laboratories dedicated to teaching our huskies all the intricacies and complexities of the world. Science Building - Built 2001 In the late 1880s several residences, including a lodging house, were built on this site, but were torn down some time afterward. In 1949 a two-story reinforced concrete building erected here housed a motor parts store and an oil filter service company. It was demolished before construction of the Science Building. The first of two new-construction projects on the UW Tacoma campus, the Science Building was designed by Moore Ruble Yudell of Santa Monica, California, and LMN Architects of Seattle to blend in with the nearby historic brick buildings. A skybridge links the Science and Keystone buildings above Hood Street, where the original railroad terminus that linked Tacoma to the transcontinental railroad once brought trains through what is now the campus. A note on caffeine. ⁣ ⁣ There is a strong importance to limiting ourselves to 1 caffeine drink daily. Many of us have become reliant on coffee as a life source, unable to function without 2, 3 or even 4 cups a day. It’s addictive tendencies consume us, and we feel withdrawal without it. ⁣ ⁣ Upon waking up in the morning, cortisol levels spike, meaning our bodies are provided with sufficient energy to power through the day. ⁣ ⁣ Though that cup of coffee first thing in the morning does provide an instantaneous jolt, it increases cortisol at it’s already high point, which can negatively impact hormonal balance, insulin production, immune response, deep sleep, and cause weight gain. Cortisol is necessary for our health; however, the problem is when we are constantly drinking coffee, our body is continuously producing cortisol, throwing off the raw cycles in our bodies. ⁣ ⁣ For some, coffee can be beneficial, as it does stimulate acid production and may help those who struggle with depression. But, the best time to drink it is not upon waking. The best time is to drink a cup after breakfast, between 9:30 AM and noon, when your cortisol levels typically drop, and not past then. ⁣ ⁣ If you find yourself reaching for more than one cup a day, your body may have come to use caffeine as a crutch and has thrown off it’s natural wake-up mechanisms. ⁣ ⁣ My advice:⁣ - Sleep 7-9 hours at night, falling asleep before 11 PM.⁣ - Quality is just as important as quantity. Promote restful sleep by taking a highly absorbable Magnesium supplement, powering off electronics, drinking herbal tea, or taking an Epsom salt bath before bed.⁣ - Drink 1 Liter of water upon waking. We lose water as we sleep and most commonly wake up dehydrated.⁣ - Slowly wean yourself off of coffee and try drinking green tea or matcha. These have calming properties with similar amounts of caffeine as coffee.⁣ - Be patient and motivated. You may feel headaches, fatigue, and lethargy. Happy Monday! I am certainly glad its the beginning of a new week! Last week was such a rollercoaster. At the beginning of the week, I dropped one of my favourite mugs from @saltyseadogdesigns and it broke. My @mardaloopmadeyyc market on Saturday was super eventful with my tent flying off, with a couple of the weights still on! All my stuff went flying off and a few of my display items broke or got damaged. But I had so many lovely people jump in and help me catch the tent, tear it down, pick up and clean up, and I am so grateful to everyone that jumped in and helped! And to end the week, I got the very sad news that a couple I know, husband and wife, passed away during the weekend after contracting covid. Experiencing weeks like this makes me feel even more grateful when I have good days. I had to pull out of college, my friends disappeared over a period of time and I had little idea on what to make of my life at that point. My family was very supportive during this period and if they did break down, they never let me know about it. What I missed the most though was the outdoors. It took a while to find my composure and I soon got interested in computers and IT. Around the same time, I started reading about the human brain and was fascinated with what I gathered. I decided to go back to school, eventually graduating with a degree in psychology and cognitive neuroscience from Fergusson College. It earned me a job as part of the Human Resources team at Tata. That stint changed my outlook towards life for good. I started leading treks in the Sahyadris once again. My colleagues could hardly believe the fact that a blind man was guiding them up a mountain. And finally, I found my calling. Through Adventures Beyond Barrier Foundation, I today work towards including disabled people in the mainstream. And I chose the medium of play to make it happen. Cycling expeditions from Manali to Leh, treks to Everest Base Camp, running marathons, paragliding around Kamshet and scuba diving in a pool, I’ve had folks with disability excel at it all. I want to shatter all stereotypes associated with disabilities and overcome the biggest barrier that we face, which has everything to do with people’s attitudes. It’s a lovely feeling to see the world become a little more empathetic over time. “Fork Press” ™️ process. Early on, I was trying to figure out how I was going to get that signature curve in my forks. Many hours on Reddit later, I found a user from 2009 that had been putting her acrylic cutlery in the oven at a low temperature (to get it malleable) and then sandwiching it between cutlery she already had to mimic the curve. ⁣That led to the idea of making a hand-held press with the positive/negative shape of a fork. After some trial and error, I lined the press with orange pool table felt to prevent any unwanted impressions when the acrylic is warm. I accidentally became a makeup artist 💄⁣ ⁣ In college, I started really experimenting with makeup. I watched countless YouTube tutorials, purchased all the products, & then I would hate them because they didn’t work for my skin type. ⁣ ⁣ After a few months of doing that, I started to figure out what worked for my skin & what didn’t. I accumulated so much makeup during that time that my friends encouraged me to started an IG account specifically to discuss makeup products that I loved so maybe it would help others. ⁣ ⁣ & then I started an account called Narrsworld. My first name is Manar, but people would call me Nar as a nickname, & I had to add the extra ‘r’ because I didn’t want NARS to come after me 😂 I added the word world in my name because I knew I wanted this to be all about whatever I wanted to discuss. (It cracks me up how many people think I own NARS or am affiliated with them; a girl can dream though.) ⁣ At that point, I would experiment on my friends & do their makeup for fun. Whenever they had events, I would do their makeup just because I had a ton more products than they did & they knew I enjoyed it, & then word of mouth started happening once people asked them who did their makeup. ⁣ Fast forward 7 years, now I am a full-time makeup artist & that is how I accidentally became one 🙃 I never started this account with the intention of becoming a professional MUA. I truly believed I wanted to simply be a beauty blogger & that’s it.
