stan suggested we have our first family pic. two weeks into being a single cat mom and I think I’ve fully adjusted to the roll. Yesterday I cleaned up two miniature piles of vomit with nothing but love and a 2 ply tissue. ⠀ ⠀ The first day I got stan I cried because responsibly scares the shit out of me sometimes. (He was just staring at me like get a fucking grip susan.) I’ve never had a pet before and I am now solely responsible for this cat-man’s life. Not to be dramatic but if I think too much about it it makes me anxious - but equally I wouldn’t have it any other way. ⠀ ⠀ I used to move through life always waiting on X Y Z until I could feel comfortable enough to do stuff that scares me. These conditions would usually pivot around some kind of man - waiting for a relationship / a marriage / a family lol. ⠀ ⠀ But in reality, there’s no better feeling than feeling fully capable on your own. Without relying on someone else and taking ownership of what you want to do in life and trusting you can do it. Like adopting a Stanley. Cakemania è nato quando una webdesigner che conoscevo appena mi ha detto: “facciamo il Facebook delle torte: tu cucini, io faccio il sito. Vediamo come va!”. @marcella_marraro diversamente da me non ha mai avuto voglia di torta tutti i giorni, e dopo 3 anni mi ha detto: “che ci sto a fare qui? Continua tu, è la tua passione”. E così la mia passione ha seguito il mio percorso personale: il cake design all’inizio; poi torte complesse; poi con meno glasse e più frutta; poi con meno zucchero; poi non si vive di sole torte quindi ecco i piatti salati; poi raga io sono impallata con l’orto, con i gatti, con i cani, quindi vi parlo anche di questo e di quanto mi preme fare la mia parte per proteggere l’ambiente. A metà strada è nata la top 5 del mese, diario pubblico-privato che ha un piccolo seguito molto affezionato. Oggi sono quella in foto: una nonna che ama il giardinaggio e la cucina semplice. Non mi riconosco più nel simbolo un po’ adolescenziale di una torta rosa. Non mi riconosco più in un nome che è composto da “cake” (ci sono 400 ricette di dolci sul sito, mi merito di pensare anche a fagiolini e frittate) e da “mania” (sono più calma di quanto non sembri). So che “cakemania” confonde le idee a chi arriva su questo profilo e trova fertilizzanti fatti con i gusci delle uova, verze fermentate e attivismo. E non posso dargli torto. Quindi… per coerenza sto pensando di cambiare nome a tutto questo. Per coerenza e avere un nome che cresce e cambia con me, per non ritrovarmi un’impasse simile tra qualche anno, il nome dovrebbe essere semplicemente il mio – come mi suggeriscono le mie socie @raffaella_babygreen e @mammafelice: SashaCarnevali o addirittura Sasha. Però sono di una generazione per la quale mettersi così in evidenza è una cosa da screanzati. Passi per nome e cognome (d’altra parte stanno anche all’anagrafe), ma solo in nome?? Gnaaaapossofare (chi sono, Madonna? Seal? McLovin?). Insomma. La situazione è questa, un grande dubbio amletico: essere o non essere più Cakemania? Voi cosa dite? Cosa mi consigliate? Oh hey I’m 28 now! Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes and kind words. This year I feel especially grateful and humbled to have so many caring people in my life. First decade of adulthood ✅! . The 2nd photo was taken 10 years ago in the Hayden NYU dorm - I was 18yo and had just moved to NYC alone, literally the only person in my entire 800 person HS class that went to the city. My face here sums up my feelings during that time pretty well: excited, wide-eyed, and oh-so-naive. I had no idea all the things I would experience, learn, and do in the next 10yrs. Who I was as a person, my entire worldview, would change in that city and I often tell people I was raised in HTX but grew up in NYC. In this photo I was on the brink of all that change. . It’s a weird feeling to look at that photo now and think of that time because in a lot of ways I feel I’ve simultaneously lived 100 lives since then and also none at all. I often still wake up feeling like I’m 24 at most and I wonder where the years have gone, and that scares me... A LOT. But recently Ive been thinking a lot about how everything in life is made up of cycles, beginnings and endings over and over again. Perhaps my Peter Pan-complex is a sign that I am on the cusp of another time of change? Back then, I learned to open myself up to the world, let go, and survive. But in that process I think I also stopped listening to myself in a lot of ways, because that was often the more painful and confusing choice. It’s all too easy, especially in a place like NYC (and later LA), to find distractions and look outwardly for validation. Ive done that...a lot, still do. But lately the same habits and distractions havent been doing the trick and a lot of things have been resurfacing for me. . In a lot of ways I feel like Im at the beginning of a cycle again. I feel the same today as I did in that photo: hopeful, excited, nervous for what the future holds. So I guess I just want to thank everyone who has been a part of my journey, big or small. Encountering other bicycle tourers on the trail is always a treat. Last week, we posted a couple of stories about Julia Vallera and her creative exploits over at @bikepackingcom. I met Vermont-based Julia (aka @lovedrawrings) on the Baja Divide, where she was riding with a group of Canadian friends. As a posse, we lived through the route’s fabled highs and lows… spirit lifting desert expanses and crushed avocado dreams alike. ↟↟↟ An artist and teacher, Julia was aboard a Surly Pugsley she’d converted to 27.5+ wheels - making it the ultimate peanut-butter-mud-vanquisher - and bedecked with a hodgepodge of borrowed bikepacking gear. Her cap is from Colombia and was bought from the family of Nairo Quintano (El Cóndor de los Andes), no less. Equally memorable, her sunglasses were swap shopped from a Baja older timer on our last day riding together. ↟↟↟ Amongst other creative projects, Julia took a photo a day on a disposable camera, later illustrating them with Baja themes. The results are playful and whimsical… scroll through to the last picture for some of my favourite examples! Julia makes all kinds of cool stickers too, and soon, when this pesky virus is over, she’s promised to print some boojum-inspired T-shirts for all you Baja plant lovers. Another great trip with awesome friends (will post more about that later). Being in nature really helps you refocus on life and what you find important. It also reminds us how small we are in the face of nature; things will be okay. As the year is winding down I keep reflecting on my goals for next year and I think these will do. -Hit 1250 lbs on the main 3 lifts (current 1163 lbs) -Hit a 350 Wilks Score (current 317) -Get better times on my Spartan Trifecta races -Keep track of my macros and calorie intake -Get further into data science It’s not a crazy amount of things and they all interconnect but it’s what I find important to me. Day5: So I didn’t actually take any digital pictures on day 5.It was our last day. We had checked out of the hotel, and packed everything up. We went to a couple of lookouts along the Waimea Canyon, but it was a little bit windy and rainy that day. The Canson Mixed Media Sketchbook is a good option for those starting with art journaling! The paper is 98 lb weight, which means it’s thicker than the average sketchbook. It holds up well to wet media with a little bit of buckling from the moisture. Bleeding through the page is pretty minimal, almost non-existent. The only feature that might not be appealing is the coil binding. I find it helpful since it allows the journal to lay flat, but some people don’t like the interruption the coil brings. This is personal preference! Happy Cinco de Mayo! Many seem to confuse this holiday with Mexican Independence Day, which it is not. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Armys victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. Every year we host a party (Mexican food, agave cocktails, and bright textiles - all of our favorite things) and super bummed to be missing it this year. Small town America shifts its visceral tone from a feverish collision of loudmouth hustle, to a patchwork of gorgeous landscapes and untouchable charm. Being originally from a city, I often dream of such escape. I don’t like noise too often, I prefer the quiet. The idle. Those in-between spaces, those bold moments of hyper awareness. I recently embarked on a road trip, pandemic style. Isolated in the car for hours upon hours, on the couch or hotel bed starting yet another episode of shit TV, ordering contactless delivery, and wearing my cloth mask everywhere in public — truly covering my identity in places no one knew I existed regardless. Anonymity is a funny thing. It felt... strange. But this is 2020. And it’s a strange year. I didn’t take too many pictures. To be honest, this year isn’t one I want to really remember. Instead of spending copious amounts of money on rolls for film, I just snapped the more meaningful moments on an iPhone and called it settled. And I love it. I love these pictures. They’re perfectly imperfect and just enough to still make me feel something. Although, the first picture was from early May; a time I genuinely felt happy. A post like this has been a long time coming for me. (These pictures are in reverse order from end of summer to the beginning.) I wish I could have said it was the best summer I have ever had, but too be honest it was one of the hardest, for a lot of reasons. I did have some fun adventures, got to be with my family a lot, and made some good friends. It’s hard being a perfectionist and going to college, because I worry about school all day. I check my grades every couple of hours and make sure I don’t miss an assignment. If I lose a couple of points from an essay, I stress out about it, because I think I am slacking and didn’t take it seriously enough. Before exams, I study viscously and only relax once I get back good grades. It can get intense and I am really harsh on myself, but I’m learning to find a nice balance. I know sometimes I just need to put school aside and focus on myself and enjoy life a little better. There was a time in my life where I viewed vulnerability as weakness… I judged and suppressed my need for love, kindness and compassion...They made me vulnerable, therefore, I believed they made me weak. It was a vicious cycle, one that walled off my battered heart. The thing about healing is it requires vulnerability. The thing about vulnerability is it requires the walls to come down. The thing about walls coming down is that your heart becomes exposed and the arrows of life (the pain, struggle and suffering) pierce the delicate outer layers of the heart. It becomes the work to see the arrows for what they are- difficulty and pain- applying compassion and kindness to the wounds in our hearts so as not to drive the arrows deeper or add more arrows of our own. The ‘second arrows’ come flying at our hearts when we add story and narrative around our pain, “Why me? Why does this always happen to me?” “He is a&*, he has always been an a&*” this just drags our past into our present and projects our pain into the future, instead of tending to the wounds of the now. We, as a collective, are facing many arrows in our hearts. I am personally tending to so many wounds I can’t help but wonder sometimes at how my heart is still beating in my chest. But the heart is strong, resilient, and far more capable than we realize. So I will apply the balm of kindness and compassion, I will sit in vulnerability and whisper, “hello my beautiful beating heart, thank you for all you hold, for all you have held over the years. I am so grateful that you are my heart. I know you are hurting and I’m so sorry to know you are in pain, but I am here, I won’t leave you, I promise. This morning I woke up & I really missed Ike. He’s fine, he was laying on the floor by my feet, sleeping. But for some reason I missed him. I was painfully aware that this is all temporary. I swiped through pictures on my phone, reminiscing on our friendship. I found this old film photo Z took of us backpacking- it stopped me in my tracks. ❤️14.June.2020❤️ In 1 hour, I will be turning 24 years old... I do this strange thing of feeling really sad on my birthday. Birthdays make me asses my my overall life. Have I accomplished everything I strived for? How do I compare to other people my age? Am I running away from my goals and aspiration or am I fighting to keep them alive? To be honest, I am not always sure if I am making the best decision for myself. I am not a fortune teller nor am I smart enough to know.
