Read about parts of town I think offer some beautiful art resources, architecture, or just general vibes that I think are more inspirational than what usually pops up on standard tourist sites (especially when it comes to the Black community in Richmond). There’s only one Confederate statue left on public view (🙌🏾) and the way it looks today—as it sits in the center of Marcus-David Peters Circle—is stunning in so many ways. He had met some aunties at the market who were doing their grocery shopping, and about to head home on their bicycles. The album, Material Flats, is a completely diy project, written this summer amidst protest, fire and unrest. Recorded with Nate Urbansky and Patrick Martin at my home studio out in the desert. Bethany and Patrick drove across the country and lived in the vintage trailer tiny house Nate and I had just finished renovating, while we wrote and recorded this 8 track album. I even tracked everything myself. I’m an engineer now I guess? (As always, gotta shoutout to YouTube metal heads for the drum mic tutorials). The whole vibe is very diy-doomsday-prepper-punk and we couldn’t be more thrilled with it. The first single ‘White Balloon’ is about danger lurking in plain sight. The line between preparedness and paranoia, and features some of my favorite vocals Bethany and I have ever written in our more than a decade singing together 😳. Swipe for a teeny taste. I’m grateful, humbled, and excited to share that I will begin my PhD journey this fall at the University of Maryland*. I am pursuing a doctorate in Student Affairs from the Higher Education, Student Affairs, and International Education Policy program in the College of Education. My advisor will be Dr. Bridget Turner Kelly, a brilliant and caring scholar, teacher and mentor. I will continue to work full-time alongside the inspiring students and faculty in College Park Scholars. I am so thankful that I was able to share this news with dad a month before he passed, and I know how proud he was of me. He was one of my greatest champions, and I will honor him everyday by showing up with the compassion and sense of justice I learned from him. I love you pops. Coronavirus is laying bare so many of the structural and systemic issues in our society. I look forward to learning together with a diverse community of faculty, students and cohort friends. Now more than ever, I hope that my energy will contribute to the ongoing work of transforming higher education and our world into a more just, caring, and thriving space for all. This wild rice salad takes flavours from the last days of summer and the first days of fall to create a beautiful dish your friends and family will love! ☀️🍂 Grab our wild rice at @costco_canada Posted @withregram • @marcellerogers NEW RECIPE - Tonight’s dinner was a salad made of nutty wild rice with layers of fennel, herbs and avocado, sweet orange segments and roasted beetroot with crunchy toasted pumpkin seeds and drizzled with my citrus seed dressing. While it requires planning ahead to cook the wild rice for nearly an hour, the vegetables and herbs are quick and easy to put together. • Fennel and orange wild rice salad 1 cup wild rice 1 red onion, finely sliced 1 fennel, sliced on a mandolin handful of parsley, roughly chpd handful of mint, roughly chpd 1 avocado, sliced 1 orange, zest and segments cut wo pith 5 sml roasted beetroot, quartered 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds, toasted Cook the rice in 4 cups of water for 45-55 minutes until soft. When cooked, cool a little. Toast the pumpkin seeds in a 180’C oven for 5 minutes. Pour a small amount of orange seed dressing and orange zest on the platter and add the rice and stir, layer the onion, fennel, herbs and avocado on the platter and gently mix. Top with orange segments, beetroot and sprinkles of pumpkin seeds and fennel fronds. As you serve, pour the orange seed dressing over the platter. Further, we must acknowledge where we cling to our own socialisation and investments in false narratives about others. Only then is it possible to take wise action that is in service to the freedom of all women. + 𝗪𝐇𝐎 𝐈𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐓 𝐅𝐎𝐑? Faktanya adalah bahwa Jakarta krisis air bersih! Kok bisa?? Jakarta berada di posisi kelima dari 11 kota di dunia yang paling terancam krisis air bersih, padahal 70% permukaan bumi mencakup lautan. Namun, hanya 3% saja yang tergolong air segar. Masih banyak warga yang tidak menyadari, bahwa Jakarta adalah kota pesisir yang menghadapi ancaman kenaikan permukaan air laut di masa depan, apalagi sekarang kota Jakarta penuh dengan beton dan aspal. Sehingga lapangan terbuka tidak bisa menyerap curah hujan dengan baik dan dapat menimbulkan banjir seperti yang terjadi pada minggu lalu. Selain itu juga pengambilan air tanah yang berlebihan menyebabkan penurunan permukaan tanah dan pencemaran air tanah. Seperti di Jakarta Barat yang telah mengalami penurunan tanah hingga 15 cm pertahun, Jakarta Timur sekitar 10 cm, Jakarta Pusat 2 cm, dan Jakarta Selatan 1 cm. Jika hal ini terus terjadi, kemungkinan tahun 2050 Jakarta diperdiksi akan tenggelam. Jadi, apa solusi yang mudah untuk mendapatkan air bersih, sembari membantu kondisi tanah dan air di Jakarta yang bisa kita lakukan di rumah? 1. Believe in yourself. You can do this. 2.Tell your friends and get them on board. Doing this together can make it easier. 3.Change your routine. Make sure you do different things. This will also help with cravings and triggers. 4.Plan alternative drinks, sparkling water with lemon, flavoured tonics or green juices and my favourite - herbal teas. 4.Have some early nights and start a new box set or read a sober quick lit. I will be recommending some during this month. 5.Avoid triggers. Meet friends for coffee and a slab of cake rather than go to the pub. Avoid situations that might include alcohol. 6.Acknowledge why you are doing this. Whether it’s for health reasons or you want to take a break you are definitely doing this for a reason so keep reminding yourself. 🙏🏻 7.Journal. Write your daily thoughts and feelings down and each night take a couple of minutes to remind yourself of how far you have come. 8.Save the money you would normally spend on alcohol and treat yourself at the end of the month. 😊 9.Exercise. Going for a long walk, jog or bike ride will raise your endorphins which will give you a positive natural high and help to boost your mood. 10. Remind yourself daily why you are doing it. Your liver, brain and mental health with thank you. Believe in yourself and think how great you will feel at the end of it. You might even decide to carry on! I have been in love with this particular shade of green, since I first discovered photos of Virginia Woolf’s sitting room at Monk’s House. It packs a punch. It seems to say, or scream, “I’m so happy, that I could kill myself.” It is beyond energizing, and careens head long into disruption. I love to look at it but have chosen to live with it, only in the smallest of doses. I finished watching #ratched last night, and from the first episode throughout the series, I thrilled, in perfect agony at the tidal wave of this, work your nerves green. The entire cast, including this color, gave outstanding performances. But today (and yesterday) is what all small independent restaurants have been dreading. On top of running our restaurants we’ve all been brainstorming on how to make it through the cold months. Every service counts right now. Every seat matters and for today and tomorrow our seats have been more than cut in half. We are offering extremely limited seating inside tonight. But it won’t be enough to sustain us. If you can’t get a reservation at your favorite spot, please order take out. Tonight I gave one of 3 farewell speeches for Pastor Tara Beth (moving to Chicago) Here is some of what I said: Most of my adult life I have wrestled with the concept of church. When the previous pastor announced that he was leaving PazNaz, I said myself, “well that’s it, I’m also leaving”, but I reluctantly stayed. Months later it was announced that a pastor who happened to be female would be our senior pastor. I figured “well I’m pro-women in all leadership, so I guess I could stay for a bit”. Best “spiritual” choice I ever made! Pastor Tara Beth, you created a welcoming environment for me, one where questioning “the church” actually brought me closer to Jesus. You made space at “The Lords Table” for my all questions, my doubts, my anger, my potty mouth and sometimes my dark sense of humor. Your sermons have been a COMPASS that has guided me towards hope, and compassion for others… and you showed me how to love a big “C” church, with the hope and fervor that it “can be better”. Personally you have been there, through very personal struggles like: my divorce, my career ups & downs, sickness. I remember messaging you once, feeling extremely anxious while standing at the parking lot of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, right before a big work meeting where I felt completely unqualified to be there. I didn’t know if you would even reply… You did, said “I’ve been there, I have also felt Impostor syndrome, but God is with you, like He has been with me”. That was one of the many moments you pastored me… You didn’t pretend to be “INVINCIBLE”, instead you choose to show your own vulnerability and showed me what COURAGE looks like. I now believe that God put you in my life to show me a different way of connecting with Him without losing myself in “the American evangelical version of religion”, like I once did. To me TB is PazNaz and PAZNAZ is TB, so today I am sad. I am sad because I am loosing the best pastor I’ve ever had. Poor Man or Woman who comes after you, they will have big high heels to fill.
