No, I wasn’t in New York that morning. I was staying just outside of DC at my then boyfriend’s, now husband’s, parents’ house while I waited to move into a studio apartment in Alexandria. The day before, I’d scurried nervously through train stations, through this new city to take a mandatory drug test for the job I’d start soon. I was 21, fresh from college, with my pencil skirt, heels, and naivete. The morning commute spent crammed in train cars, strangers pressed against my shoulders and back unnerved me. The rules: walk on the left of the escalator, stand on the right lest ye be dragged by vicious, Starbucks-cradling products of the post-collegiate machine. The yelling homeless at Farragut West: “I know you’ve got fucking money!” Maybe, I’d get used to it. ⠀⠀ ⠀ The next morning, I was in bed and the house phone wouldn’t stop ringing. Someone left a frantic message on the answering machine about a bomb. My new cell phone, the fancy flip kind, had no signal. I went outside and stood on the driveway in pajamas and bare feet. Still, no signal, but an eerie calm and quiet frisked the air as stay-at-home mothers brought school children home in pretty SUVs onto the prettier cul-de-sac. It was after 9am. It was weird. My own mother who lived many states away usually called by now, with updates on my 19-year-old cousin who lay dying in a hospital in Texas. Leukemia. Back inside, I grabbed a bowl of cereal, turned on the television, and there it was.⠀⠀ ⠀ @lp613 we weren’t speaking then because of stupid stuff. Remember? But I knew you were starting a job in Manhattan, and I needed to hear your voice. I called a lot of people that day. I got over a lot of bullshit that day. In two weeks, I’d have no option but to fly to Texas if I was going to make my cousin’s funeral. I sat in an aisle seat, eyes rimmed red, and heart stomped and gutted, clasping the armrest while asking forgiveness, preparing to explode among the clouds. In a week I’d start my new job on the 13th floor of a building on the corner of Connecticut and K. Where do your heart and soul call home? 🏡 In the most surreal of circumstances, we search for authenticity. Sometimes, that means returning to passions we’ve lost touch with in our lives. Roger Medearis (1920 – 2001) was an artist, born in Fayette, Missouri, who studied under Thomas Hart Benton and showed early promise in the movement of Realism. In 1946, after his service with the army came to a close, he moved to Connecticut where he built an artist’s studio. At his first show in 1949 at New York’s Kende Galleries, seven of his Realist paintings were sold, and a piece from his subsequent show in 1950, “Family Reunion”, was later exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But with income scarce, and Abstract Expressionism growing in popularity, Medearis grew disillusioned with America’s fading interest in the art of Realism, to which he had dedicated his life and studies. He moved from Connecticut back to his Midwestern roots, working as a paper salesman for over 10 years. He would avoid virtually all exposure to art. By the 1960s, however, after moving to California, Medearis found himself visiting art galleries and museums again, and in 1966, he converted his garage into a complete studio. He resigned from the Container Corporation of America and once again, began painting. In the decades that followed, Medearis continued to hone and evolve his technique, creating his own, unmistakable style. He continued to paint until his death in 2001. Но товар, как говориться нужно показывать лицом. ⠀ Сегодняшние тренды в инстаграм достаточно сильно поменялись и не достаточно показать красивые фоточки, за что тебя усыпят лайками и комментариями с ног до головы. А уж для того, что бы на тебя подписались, нужно вообще горы свернуть))) а вы наверно знаете, что от популярности поста зависит охват и вывод в топ, а соответственно и привлечение потенциальных клиентов. И вот, теперь фотографу нужно не только фотографировать и обрабатывать, но и «продавать» себя, быть интересным подписчикам и заниматься своим продвижением. И чтобы за фоточкой был такой текст, от которого мурашки по телу побегут)) Писатель из меня никакой, а научиться можно многому, лишь бы было желание. ⠀ И вот, я начала поиски учителя по написанию сторителлинга. Да-да, мы всегда чему-то учимся ))) Найдя интересный курс я решила познакомиться поближе с преподавателем. Мне показалось, что просто отзывов на сайте не достаточно. Захотелось узнать о преподавателе, посмотреть как бы изнутри. Но ведь правда, это же совершенно нормальное желание вдохновится текстами, энергией, словом, стилем учителя. ⠀ Конечно, деньги не большие за курс, но для кого-то и они не малые. Да и самый острый ресурс на сегодняшнее день - время, потраченное на прохождение курса. Заглянула на страничку в ИГ и взгрустнула. Подписчиков около тысячи, а постов за лето 3! В одном из них она как раз пишет, что ее спросили: «разве может чему-то научить преподаватель, у которого тысяча подписчиков?». В ответ она вспомнила свою маму преподавателя с 30 летним стажем и отсутствием у нее странички в ИГ и родителей ее учеников не сомневающихся в ее профессионализме. ⠀ Не могу согласиться с ее примером про маму. Слишком разные профессии. Это как выбирать пилота самолета, на котором вы полетите на отдых. I meet my tours across the street from her, so I thought Id share the history of one of the most famous restaurants in New Orleans! Emile Commander established a small saloon at the corner of Washington Ave and Coliseum St in 1893. Within a few years he turned it into a restaurant patronized by the distinguished neighborhood families of the Garden District & by 1900 Commanders Palace was attracting gourmets from all over the world. Legend has it that stored alcohol was ferried across from the adjacent cemetery during prohibition for patron beverages. In the 1920s, Frank G. Giarratano was the owner of the restaurant. He lived above the restaurant with his wife, Rose, and their two sons. In 1944, he sold Commanders Palace to Frank and Elinor Moran, who refurbished it and carried on its tradition of excellence with an expanded menu including many recipes still used. When Ella, Dottie, Dick and John Brennan took over personal supervision of the restaurant in 1974, they began to give the splendid old landmark a new look both inside and out including painting the outside the iconic Commanders Blue. UNIVERSITY — 80 percent of students to enroll in fall 2020 — An email circulated among department heads reported that about a fifth of all Yale College students have chosen not to enroll for the upcoming semester. According to the email, which shared preliminary estimates for undergraduates’ fall plans, more than half of the student body will be living in Yale’s dorms or the surrounding area. Hi friends, I wanted to share a cause that is near and dear to my heart. My dad and his partner lost their home and most of their possessions in the Oregon fire. It was a beautiful old fishing cabin on the bank of the McKenzie River. My dad had just finished several projects around the house, including updating their pergola, deck, and gate. His partner, Cindy, is an avid gardener and had spent countless hours tending to their garden. They were immensely proud of their home. It was a special space for them as well as our whole family. I cant believe its gone. This is obviously a devastating loss for them. My sister @palominojax and I are raising money to help get them back on their feet. ANNYE CAMARA & OUR LOCAL GROCERS Outside of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, the frontlines of the coronavirus on the island have been largely at local grocery stores. And Nana Ruth from “Family Matters” ⁣ I’m know my grandmothers met at various points, but Nana Ruth died when I was 5 or 6 so I have no recollection of any of these encounters, and can’t fathom what these two women made of each other. My mother’s mother, who became GG when her first great grandchild was born, grew up affluent Ohio. Nana Ruth came to this country as an immigrant from Ukraine and remained poor,not speaking particularly great English, for her entire life. The most distinct memory I have of Nana Ruth is her placing me on the bathroom counter, taking out her false teeth, and showing me how she brushed them. GG, on the other hand, is someone I knew well into my adult life, and I didn’t know she wore false teeth until after she died. Her hair, makeup, and nails, were perfectly done at all times. I photographed this 100 year old woman in her small ranch kitchen outside Gallatin Gateway, Montana many years ago. People among their stuff tells a more in-depth story. I had her hold the wedding photo, and honestly I cannot now remember if it was hers or her parents photo, but the point was to remind the viewer that this 100 year old woman was once very young like them. And that when she looks out at the world she sees it as she did when she was young. People’s bodies grow old but the person inside does not. In today’s ‘Throwback Thursday’ we’re highlighting ‘Stanley’s Variety’ at the corner of Gerrard St. and Ontario St., originally built in 1875. ⁣ ⁣ It was once a Dominion Store, which was a chain of shops that many years later became part of Metro. This picture was taken in 1926. ⁣ ⁣ Unfortunately this historic building was recently tagged with a lot of graffiti. That is, until, some passionate volunteers from Cabbagetown South took it upon themselves to remove it this week! ⁣ ⁣ Taggers beware!
