5 weeks ago today I collapsed at home. I was in and out of consciousness. Floppy and breathless and in pain, my left arm tingling. My partner rung an ambulance and I spent the next 8 hours in A&E before being told that my x-ray were “all clear”. Over the next two weeks my fatigue and breathlessness didn’t let up and I got called back for a CT scan but no one could tell me why I needed one. Who sent me for one? Did they find something on the x-ray? And I just went for the test and thought nothing of it. Because as a disabled, chronically sick person who has been in and out of hospital my whole adult life, my scans are always clear and everything is always a chronic illness mystery. Until this time. Until that 9am phone call that random Tuesday morning telling me that I had a 10cm tumour in my chest, right between my lungs just in front of my heart, and that no matter what it was, it was definitely Something Bad. I’ve been struggling to find the words to explain what has been going on in my life these past five weeks. Why I have been so quiet here and the guilt that I have felt about not speaking out at this time. But frankly, my cancer diagnosis has hit me in a way I didn’t imagine. I took this picture on Wednesday when I returned from my first session of chemotherapy. Before the side effects hit me, and before I felt like crap. I’m trying to take the time to honour my body as it does this really hard thing of fighting (and beating 🤞🏼) lymphoma. I don’t know how much of that I will share here, or how or even if sewing fits into that journey. But I have always been honest here about my health and my life. And this is the important life update that I feel I need to share with you all. BOUNDARIES: Please don’t DM me unless we’re close friends. This ones for you, Bob.   Bob Gore, the inventor of Gore-Tex, sadly passed away last week. Its nearly 50 years since someone from Gore walked into our factory and showed us the material for the first time, but we remember it like it was yesterday. No sooner had we poured them a fresh brew than they had popped a layer of Gore-Tex fabric on top of the cup and stared at us with a grin - not typical behaviour for a first meeting, but then pioneers don’t really do typical. In that instant, we saw the steam rising up through the fabric and we realised it was both breathable and waterproof... just what wed been looking for. It changed everything. Wir versofareisen mit Jürgen Schütte 850 Kilometer, in einem Faltboot, durch das Polarmeer und gönnen uns eine Abkühlung. Freitag - 21.8.- 20:00 Jürgen Schütte - Spitzbergen - Inseln im Eis Das Inselarchipel „Svalbard“ liegt auf halben Weg vom nördlichsten Punkt Norwegens zum Nordpol, direkt im Eismeer. Es ist eine ungastliche Gegend für Menschen. Die Sonne geht monatelang nicht unter und lässt Besucher jegliches Gefühl für Zeit verlieren. Manchmal ist die Luft so klar, dass weit Entferntes zum Greifen nah erscheint. Ein anderes Mal hüllen Nebelbänke das Land tagelang in graue Schleier. Bekannt wurde Svalbard in den vergangenen Jahren durch Medienberichte über das Abschmelzen der Gletscher und des Inlandeises. Von Longyearbyen, der Hauptstadt des Inselarchipels, startete die ungewöhnliche Kajakreise von Jürgen Schütte. Bereits nach zwei Wochen fiel seine Paddelpartnerin aus gesundheitlichen Gründen aus. So machte sich Jürgen Schütte allein auf den Weg nach Norden. Er folgte den Spuren von Forschern wie Nansen und Amundsen und erkundete die Siedlungsgebiete der Pomoren, die als Walfänger und Jäger die Insel in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten bewohnten. Mit dem größten norwegischen Eisbrecher, der „Svalbard“, geht es nach knapp zwei Monaten Kajakreise wieder zurück nach Longyearbyen. Ein Geologe führte Jürgen Schütte zum „ältesten Wald der Welt“. In Svea, eine der letzten Bergbausiedlungen auf der Insel und die letzte Reisestation auf dem Heimweg, gibt es nur ca. 15 Straßenkilometer, aber ein Vielfaches an Strecke, die man mit dem Auto durch die Minenwelt fahren kann. Ein Kohlefrachtschiff bringt Jürgen Schütte und seine Ausrüstung zurück ins „warme“ Deutschland.
