Back in Toronto! I missed this country so much. There are things I think people in North America take for granted that you really miss once you don’t have them for a while... Or at least I took them for granted growing up here, even though I tried not to. Plumbing... Amazon... Internet... Being able to order packages into your country... Clean tap water... I didn’t realize how stressed I was away from home (it’s been 8 months living out of a suitcase) until I got back and felt my shoulders relax. Very happy to be back. You can see by my face 🙃. This amazing book by Layla F Saad has been my companion for a while now, and I whole heartedly recommend it to everyone who holds white privilege. Picking through my past with a fine tooth comb to pin point and face the times in my life where my behaviour has been damaging to BIPOC, and knowing that there are probably many more times and ways I’ve wielded my white privilege or dished out microaggressions that I still can’t see is an important part of dismantling the racism within myself and minimising the chance that I cause harm in the future. This work must be done! Yeh it’s uncomfortable AF and brings up a lot of shame but guess what? That’s normal. Us lot need to stop being so damn fragile and get better at sitting in that discomfort!!!! I adore this little green chest & believe it or not I was happy to see the pink go !! I’ve wanted to paint over the pinkish color for a while & the green is a much better color with the florals on the wall. I only knew I was pregnant for one week before I miscarried our tiny chocolate-chip-sized baby. Its amazing how much you can fall in love with someone in just seven days. How much your heart can change with one +. . In January I prayed a tiny, half hearted prayer. I asked that God would change my heart… that He would change *our* heart together about how we viewed our future in regards to children… IF it needed to be changed. . The problem was that I thought my heart was doing pretty well. I thought I knew what God was going to do and I was pretty sure I was right where I would always stand. . Everything about this year has been different than my plan. Ive wrestled with the complete uncertainty of life and nothing has both shaken me and simultaneously grounded me like the past few weeks. I thought I was content because I was in a season of my choosing… a season of my plans. Turns out, it wasnt contentment, it was control that I was seeking. . Theres been many times I have said Christ will hold me fast... But now I believe it with all my heart. You never know how strong your anchor is on the calm days, but in the storm, when it is tested, you finally see its strength. Even though the waves have thrown my boat around, my confidence in His strength grows with each swell as I see Christ, my sure and steady anchor, holding unmovable. . I still dont know what the plan is or what is happening. I dont know why or what now. Everything feels even more swirly than it did before… but Im still watching my anchor as the waves crash. Though my heart is torn, I will praise Him in the storm. . Jesus never promised me a life here, free from loss. But He promised to be near and He promised that His nearness is to me, my good. He promised to never leave me. He promised that one day He will come and every tear will be wiped away. . Grief is a mess, but a mess Jesus can handle. He knew grief. He knows my heart. He sees bitterness tempt me and He helps me say not this time. He sits with me. Because of Jesus, death doesnt have the final victory. . Effects of Time-Restricted Eating on Weight Loss and Other Metabolic Parameters in Women and Men With Overweight and Obesity. . The TREAT Randomized Clinical Trial results have just been published in JAMA Internal Medicine. . Intermittent fasting or time restricted eating (TRE) has been the focus of attention for some time now. The risks and benefits have all not been fully evaluated yet through scientific studies so this RCT is very helpful to shed some light. . JAMA Intern Med. Published online September 28, 2020. doi:10.1001/jamainternmed.2020.4153 . ‘Objective To determine the effect of 16:8-hour time-restricted eating (TRE) on weight loss and metabolic risk markers. . Participants were randomized such that the consistent meal timing (CMT) group was instructed to eat 3 structured meals per day and permitted to snack, and the TRE group was instructed to eat ad libitum from 12:00 pm until 8:00 pm and completely abstain from caloric intake from 8:00 pm until 12:00 pm following day. They did not prescribe calorie or macronutrient guidance so as to offer a simple, real-world recommendation to free-living individuals. Results: Time-restricted eating did not confer weight loss or cardiometabolic benefits in this study. TRE, in the absence of other interventions, is not more effective in weight loss than eating throughout the day. Interestingly, skipping breakfast did not increase weight gain. . The TRE is attractive as a weight-loss option in that it does not require time-consuming methods such as calorie-counting or adherence to complicated diets. However, in contrast to our hypothesis, there was no greater weight loss with TRE compared with the CMT. Specifically:, there were no significant differences in fat mass, fasting insulin, glucose, HbA1C, or lipids between the two groups. . The results of this study (1) do not support the efficacy of TRE for weight loss, (2) highlight the importance of control interventions, and (3) offer caution about the potential effects of TRE on Appendicular lean muscle mass (ALM). Yesterday on my stories, I talked about anxiety, depression, monster PMS symptoms, and feelings of loneliness sparked by working from home + the pandemic. And it hit home for some of you. And I’m glad it did. Let’s talk about it. ✨ I have anxiety, and with anxiety comes depressive episodes. They can last five minutes or five days. When feelings of depression surface for me, it’s usually coupled with my cycle. PMS is a b*tch, yes, but for some of us, it can be excruciating. There are days when I am so annoyed/sad/angry that I don’t even recognize myself, and there’s so much about this that I wish people understood and could hold space for. A woman’s body 👏 goes 👏 through 👏 it, and it can take its toll on a person physically, mentally, and emotionally. And it does for me sometimes. Luckily, I got my cycle yesterday, and the fog lifted and I felt like me again. It also helped I had a girl’s night to look forward to that I desperately needed. So, I took a picture (the one in green), because I wanted to remember her. I wanted to remember me. There are the other sides of myself who I must love just as much, and those are pictures 2 and 3. Three was taken on an overwhelming day. Two was taken when I set boundaries and began to take back control. ✨ It’s been a big couple of weeks in my life. Work is wild, but I’m grateful. I received news from my chiropractor that shook me (I’m fine, I think 🤣). Lucy is recovering from her spay surgery (doing great! hates the cone!), and I’m navigating what it means to be an adult and to act like one. This means owning my own mess, calling mess out in others, and remembering to pay my car note on time. Oops. 🤷‍♀️ We’re all navigating this hellish year together. We’re all juggling our own grief and trauma and schedules on top of it. And if you have Mental Health Fun Stuff™ or Monster PMS™ or A Buncha Other Shit™ on TOP of it all? Wow. You’re a superhero. ❤️ You aren’t broken. Not now. Not ever. Every inch of you at every stage of your life is beautiful. I found out about RBG’s passing just as I finished kneading the dough. Adam and I cried and held each other for 5 minutes in the middle of chopping carrots. Tears kept coming as I set the Rosh Hashana table ~just so~, as I always do, even though this night it was just the two of us. ⁣ ⁣ Because it’s 2020 and there’s a global pandemic in our midst, wildfire smoke just leaving our doorsteps, a tipping point election afoot, and a political revolution brewing. Because it’s been half a year since we’ve been able to properly gather with loved ones and we’re actually already at a breaking point on the eve of the new year. ⁣ ⁣ And now this. RBG. An icon, a legend, a superhero. Also. A tiny Jewish woman with a mighty spirit. Just like my mother and my grandmothers and so many of my ancestors. ⁣ ⁣ I braided the challah dough into a circle shape as is custom for Rosh Hashana. To symbolize the cycle of life. I fought back cynicism as I plated the honey and fruit to symbolize a sweet new year. ⁣ ⁣ I wrote her Hebrew name and a blessing beside a candle just for her, beside the candlesticks we always light on Holy-days. The challah came out of the oven looking and smelling perfect. ⁣ ⁣ My voice cracked as I recited the blessing on the candles when we say words about surviving and thriving and being sustained for all past moments to bring us to this very profound current instant. ⁣ ⁣ We are here, choosing life on the precipice of a new year, with so much to grieve and so much left to fight for. I had ignored it because I thought “who in their right minds would believe this baloney?”⁣ ⁣ Then somebody I know texted me, with serious concern about it. So, I did a poll in my stories and 28% of people thought this may be true. It became clear that more and more people, regardless of education level, are falling for these misinformation campaigns.⁣ ⁣ So let me say it, just to be clear, THERE IS NO MICROCHIP IN THE SARS-COV-2 vaccine. How can I be sure?⁣ ⁣ ☄️ I sit in the internal review board of my institution and I have seen the vaccine trials we are holding along with the vaccine ingredients - NO MICROCHIPS THERE⁣ ⁣ ☄️Given the smallest size of the microchips we have available now, you would have to use a 14G needle to insert the microchip. Usual needle sizes for vaccines vary between 22-25G. I don’t know about you guys, but nobody is going to be stabbing my deltoid with a 14G needle!⁣ ⁣ ☄️Where would you find a small enough battery and where would you put it? How long would said battery last? Then you would have to inject microchips periodically? So we would all be balls of microchips by the time we are 60, walking around the world?⁣ ⁣ Guys, when confronted with these types of ideas, use common sense and see who is saying it. I know some of these ideas come from physicians, but look them up and see who they are! All of the ones I have seen are fringe, anti-vaxers with poor reputations in the medical community. ⁣ ⁣ Finally, I will end with this. I am well aware of my knowledge and boundaries. My husband is an engineer and I would never go up to him and tell him how to build a bridge because I KNOW I didn’t spend years learning about construction physics and engineering. *głęboki wdech* Oto moja pierwsza polskojęzyczna książka – Rozkoszne. Wegetariańska uczta z polskimi smakami! To młodsza siostra #FreshfromPolandbook, w której opowiadam światu, o tym, co w Polsce najpiękniejsze, o jej smaku. Nie jest to jednak ta sama książka. Dostałem możliwość napisania ją na nowo, tym razem w moim ojczystym języku. Przytyła o twardą oprawę, nowe przepisy, zdjęcia i historie.  Znajdziecie w niej przepisy oscylujące wokół polskiego smaku i produktów. Są tutaj klasyki (ale z rozkosznym biglem!) np. cytrynowa karpatka z chrupiącą skorupką; trochę mniej znane przepisy regionalne zasługujące na blask fleszy (fuczki! hołubcie! krasnobrodzkie pierogi pieczone!); oraz receptury będące luźną interpretacją, tego czym jest dla mnie polski smak, jak choćby długopieczone bakłażany z prażoną gryką, miętą i czosnkową kwaśną śmietaną czy sałatka ziemniaczana z kiszonymi rzodkiewkami, gruszką i musztardą francuską.  Najbardziej lubię tytuły, które są czymś więcej niż tylko zbiorem przepisów. Takie, które są opowieścią o sztuce życia, zaproszeniem do poznania wrażliwości autora. Mam wrażenie, że udało mi się napisać taką książkę. Taką, dzięki której poznacie mnie lepiej, od nieco innej strony. Włożyłem w nią całe serce. Mam nadzieję, że się Wam spodoba. Alcoholism is a debilitating illness which can force you into choosing a drink over your relationships. Alcoholism is not just getting drunk. Schizophrenia is a poorly understood, highly stigmatised psychotic illness with a high mortality rate from both suicide and physical health problems. Schizophrenic people are not “crazy”. Panic attacks feel like dying and are the last experience someone would want to have in front of others. Panic attacks do not just affect white teenage girls. Think before you speak. Day 2 of this new style of schooling (which currently consists of two 30-min virtual sessions per day), and I’ve noticed a few things: 1. I am not patient. 2. I miss moments of peace and quiet. 3. I’ve been thinking about “power dressing” in a life without offices and events and “things” to “do”. Think about clothes that feel powerful to you. I’ve realized that, for a long time, clothes that made me feel powerful were often bodycon (the Power Dress) or masculine cuts (the Power Blazer). Why? Why must my power lie in a nipped waist or strong shoulder? Why should menswear-inspired clothing feel more powerful? Today I sat at this table and – I swear – had one of the best hours of my life. I was doing a school holiday zoom session with @benwoodillustrator and @little_bookroom – and LOTS of kids turned up with SO MUCH PASSION for writing and drawing and stories and pigeons. It really blew me away. Ben and I had a tonne of fun talking about Real Pigeons and how we create characters and tell stories full of jokes and general silliness. Which basically means we chatted about pigeon heroes then drew some EVIL FOOD VILLAINS. Lol. It was awesome. And it just really struck me afterwards, how lucky I am that I get to spend my days writing these stories and hanging out (from time to time) with brilliant, creative kids. This year has wrought some dark days so I’m all about celebrating the good times when they happen. And I’ve come to really love doing online sessions with kids because everyone can interact so effortlessly and naturally and it’s easy to share stories and ideas and drawings and questions. So a big THANK YOU to everyone who came today. I saw familiar faces on the zoom call, as well as lots of new faces and it just made my heart sing. Or should that be, coo? „Glad Midsommar!“ This weekend Sweden is celebrating midsummer, so I thought I post a pic of the other day, that just happened to have a Swedish feel to it. Swedish cinnamon buns, geranium flowers and other hygge stuff. 😄 But can we just stop for a second and reflect on the fact that almost half of the year passed by already? It has been a turbulent one so far. Turbulent in the outer world and also in my personal word. There is change on the horizon and though it can be frightening, it will be good. Certainly not the way I expected it to end, but over the moon to say I officially have my Master’s degree in genetic counseling! The last two years have been some of the most challenging, yet most fulfilling years of my life. I am so thankful for my classmates, my program leaders, and my support people - without them, I would never be anywhere near where I am today. Someone once told me which side of my face is my “good side” 😧 Instantly I felt insecure. I started thinking about how one side of my face doesn’t level up to the other, questioning which parts of my face aren’t “good enough”, wishing I could look in a mirror to look at all of the “bad” features so I could see what they saw. A spiral of self-sabotaging internal talk began. Thankfully I soon forgot which side they had pinpointed was my “good side” and after trying to remember and then figure it out on my own I gave up and got on with my life. But these sort of comments can stick with people, harness themselves around their mind and become the catalyst to self-deprecating thoughts and body dysmorphia. If you’re unsure whether a comment is helpful or harmful, a good rule to follow is not to comment on someone else’s appearance if it’s something they cannot change within 10 seconds ⏰ e.g. removing tissue from their shoe, wiping lipstick off their teeth, zipping up their fly or wiping crumbs from their mouth. - @blueollis on Instagram

כשאהיה גדולה אני רוצה להיות סבתא. בזמן שציבור האמהוֹת נמצא בחרדה מתמדת, עטופה רגשות אשמה ומתובלת במנה הגונה של עייפות מצטברת, יש מישהי שזוכה בכל הקופה. היא, את מלאכת החינוך שלה, כבר סיימה. היא כאן כדי לאהוב, לפנק ולהכין מטעמים. כדי לחבק, לצחוק ולבלות עם הנכדים. היא כאן כדי להגיד ״כן״ מתחת לשולחן, בזמן שאת אומרת לילדה ״לא״ בבטחון וגם כדי להגיד לך, שאיתך הכל היה כל כך פשוט ואולי את עושה משהו לא נכון. מזל ששניה אחר כך היא תלטף אותך ותגיד, ״הלילה אני איתה. לכי לאיש שלך. או נפלא מכך, לכי לישון!״ כשמישהו מספר שיש לו סבתא, אני מיד הופכת לגוש של קנאה. זה מרגיש לי כמו פריבילגיה כה נפלאה. תמיד אמרתי, שסבתא שלי היתה כל כך דומיננטית בחיי, עד שסבתא זה טייטל לא מספיק גדול בשבילה. היום אני מבינה, ש״סבתא״ נמצא בראש הפירמידה. אמא, זאת רק ירידה בדרגה. כשסבתא שלי נפטרה הייתי עצובה רק לרגע קטן, בתוך שעה או שעתיים היא חזרה בקול גדול, אצלי בראש כמובן. אם דיברתי איתכם ונשמעתי קצת מבוגרת לגילי, הסיבה ברורה: זאת היתה סבתא שלי. אין לי עניין לטפל בזה, תודה. זה מוסיף לי ערימות של עניין לחיים. אני מודה. סבתא שלי היתה מאחלת לאמא שלי ברגעים פחות יפים ״שתצא לך ילדה בדיוק כמוך!״ כאילו זאת קללה. לו רק ידעה שהאתגר האמיתי עבור אמא שלי, יהיה דווקא ילדה, שהיא בדיוק אמא שלה. אנחנו דנים רבות בשאלה המטופשת ״למי הילד דומה?״, כשהאופציות הברורות הן אבא, אמא, אחים, או דודות. בזמן שאנשים כמוני, גדלים להיות העתק מדויק של הסבתות. אמא שלי תמיד היתה הצעירה מבינינו. כן, ביני ובינה. היא כזאת צעירה לנצח ואני פשוט נולדתי זקנה. עד היום, כששואלים אותי בת כמה היא אני עונה בבטחון ״שלושים וחמש!״, אפילו שאני עוד רגע בת שלושים ושלוש, זה עושה לי הגיון וזה מה שיש. כשנכנסתי להריון קצת דאגתי לה, אמרתי בליבי ״סבתא זה ממש לא תפקיד בשבילה״. עד שהשפעת סמי הלידה התפוגגה, כבר עמדה מולי סבתא מצטיינת, בעיצומה של חגיגה. נמר על ענף, שירי ערש מרגיעים, בקבוקים וקקי גב, נראו אצלה טבעיים כאילו זה כל מה שעשתה עד עכשיו. ״מיציתי את האמהות עד תום! אני בשלה להיות סבתא״ אמרה לי חברה בשבוע שעבר. צחקנו בקול, אבל בלב קצת הסכמתי. להיות סבתא זה חלום לכל דבר. בזמן שאמהוּת לא מגיעה עם ספר הדרכה, יש תחושה שהסבתוֹת מחביאות יחדיו מין ספר קסמים, שמבטיח מאה אחוזי הצלחה. ממש כמו במתכונים שלהן, שם משמיטות מרכיב חשוב אחד או שניים, גם כאן הן שומרות כמה טריקים לעצמן, כדי שלא נוכל להסתדר בלעדיהן. אפילו שעה, או שעתיים. הטור שלי, החודש ב״שמנת״/הארץ - @adishi on Instagram

Growing up on a council estate had a great sense of community, everyone knew each other, doors often left unlocked as it was considered safe back in the 80s & everyone looked out for each other, friends were in abundance, but whoever you played with, you were always told “get yourself home when the street lights come on” and those who didn’t a chorus of names shouted by disgruntled mothers on doorsteps ensued , mine was generally one of them. . In 15 years of parenting this meal has never appeared in my home until now, it was my childhood treat meal @birdseyeuk beef burgers, chips, @heinz_uk beans & ketchup, thick bread & @lurpakuk and a good cup of tea. . No to chyba nie miałem racji!. Że to podważy jakieś przekonanie, kogoś zaskoczy? Nie podważy przecież, bo jak ktoś cię nie lubi to każdy por na twojej twarz i włos w twojej brwi będzie dla niego potwierdzeniem, że jesteś głupia i brzydka. Nie masz nadwagi ani różowej grzywki, tylko długie nogi i blond włosy do pasa? To się przyczepią, że nos nie taki, oczy dziwne, albo że szminka czerwona. Just wanted to pop in and say how grateful I am for all of the support I’ve received with music right now. Of course, this has been a hard time. Just like many others, I am in between jobs, and I’m spending most of my time trying to find a new one with July 31st (end of pandemic relief) just around the corner. I just set up this music space this week and it’s bringing me so much joy. I’m finally teaching myself how to record my own music, and during a time when I thought I would be recording my first full length record, I can now spending it recording my own demos and feel like I’m moving forward. Thank you so much to my dear friend Sabrina #yogastremy for this lovely cookbook on Provençale cuisine! One of the Bible’s of Provençale recipes. There are over 1000 recipes and great seasonal menus in this book by Jean-Baptiste Reboul, a chef who published the first version in 1897. For modernized and updated versions of some of these classic Provençale recipes in English I love #patriciawells book At home in Provence. But what I cherish most and is really at the core of this culture is cooking together with friends and family, sharing a meal around the table, long conversations, meals lasting for hours..and always fresh from the farm, seasonal ingredients. Good friends are to be treasured. Sabrina often talks about the importance of gratitude in her yoga classes - for which I am so grateful for!! among so many other blessings in my life, especially my friends and family. I will cherish this bible of Provençale cookery and share some recipes around the table soon. Golden Age is one month old today! This past month, I thought a lot about what the process of releasing this project looked like for me and thought about those of you out there with a long-held dream. While you wouldn’t know it now, I spent years wondering if I could even write one more song. At times it felt like the songs I used to write and my body of work had come from another person entirely. I wanted to write to the point that it ached but it felt like I just didn’t have it in me anymore. For a long time, I felt the weight of my unfinished songs while I sat in the quiet. In writing Golden Age, I was able to let go of the idealized version of what I thought I wanted (both in my life and musically). It was by allowing this project to take shape and become what it is today that I was able to loosen my grip and let go. This process became a relinquishing of the inner critic and the paralysis that comes along with it. I had to let it be. I had to write this for me. 📖 BOOK LAUNCH - VERY SOON 📖!! . After working on this project for 2 years, the launch of my book will be here soon! A lot of thought, attempts and exchanges were needed to get here but they were all precious. . Ableism - the systemic oppression of disabled people - is a word little known in France and a subject that is not talked about often. Therefore, my ambition was to show, with this illustrated and easy to comprehend book, what is ableism and the necessity to fight this oppression. I also wanted to make an English version to make it more accessible and highlight the universality of ableism. . Self-publishing wasn’t my first choice but the talks with the publishing houses didn’t end with a positive outcome: We really like it but it’s not going to be possible, It’s too political, It’s not personal enough, We already have a book about that or It’s great but not economically feasible. . Nonetheless, I knew this book was important and needed to come out. And, stroke of fate, @freaksdessin was in Paris that weekend and enthusiastic about working with me on this book… then began a period filled with calls, emails and PDF to make this project come true! . However, it seems important for me to add that, if this book exists today, it is not just because I persevered. It also exists because I have financial resources, a physical/emotional support (these people will know who they are ♥️) and time. I am not in a position where I have to survive daily and am truly privileged to be able to invest myself in personal projects like this one. . Today, I am proud to have completed this project, proud to hold my book in my hands, proud to have found my voice regarding this fight, proud to try to make my contribution and proud to finally be able to share it with you. . In short, today, I am proud of myself. . . .
