🥳 Unity Diner is two years old today! 🎉 It’s been a long, amazing journey since we opened the doors two years ago, completely overwhelmed by what we were embarking on, but with certainty that UD was about to be an incredible adventure for us all. Over the past two years we’ve worked tirelessly to keep advancing the UD mission, from strengthening our menu to taking over a rib restaurant in central London, transforming it into a huge vegan restaurant that exists for the animals, and for a vegan future. We’ve recently pushed through extremely hard times and set backs with the pandemic (and sadly a break in), and we’re not sure what winter may bring for restaurants in London, but what we can say is that throughout 2020 we’ve been working hard behind the scenes on some amazing, huge things that we can’t wait to share with you very soon. I remember going to a BLM rally in 2016 following the murder of Alton Sterling. At the end of the march, some organizers gave speeches. One woman (wish I could remember her name) said “We don’t want Police reform, we want to throw the whole system out. It was never made to protect and serve us” I remember thinking ?? Huh? Throw the whole system out?? I’ve been told all my white little life that cops are good— yeah okay i hadn’t had any great experiences with them— two sexually harassed me asking if I was giving head in a car and demanding I admit it or be booked, I was 16 at the time and not giving head... Lol. Or not taking me seriously when I went to file reports about revenge porn being circulated of my 15 year old nudes... whatever that’s besides the point! Despite MY bad experiences with cops, despite black peoples bad experiences with cops, I STILL BELIEVED we needed them? We needed them, right??? I didnt take the words or experience of black people at face value— which I should of— I thought, you know, let me do the research — found some cop propaganda like “implicit bias tests” which don’t work, or suggestions of better hiring or training processes. Newly minted with my voting abilities — This is what I sided with as a response at the time and agreed with— barely a reform that still kept a police force in tact, strong, and in general serving white people and targeting black , femme, queer, and poor people. I never did any deep diving historical research which would have shown that the police force was born out of slavery— to protect white property and white assets and put away black people. That police never cared about the people and are infiltrated with white supremecy. Police reform was never the answer, and I’m finally finally getting the picture and resources this time around to back that. Thank y’all so much— I’m learning a boatload this past week and saying it with my fucking chest —- DEFUND THE POLICE. ❤️❤️ social care for the entire community is possible! Look who surprised us and came home for Bella’s birthday weekend 🤗 These 2 are just 10 months apart so they spend a couple of months each year the same age. @willrob.jr has always hated that, ha! But he loves his sister so sweetly! People always ask because they were so close in age if they ever fought, actually they really didn’t much, they were quite the duo! We called them destructo 1 and destructo 2. They could destroy a room in about 4 seconds flat, then Will would push the window up and Bella would climb out! They were very resourceful 🤣Also @bellarobb was small, but her kick was mighty, and she wasn’t afraid to use it to put him in his place if needed, ha! I just love their sweet sibling bond! My daughter and her bestie have been together as quarantine buddies for the last few months. Before we did, we were exclusively home and it wasn’t a good situation as everyone knows. This is their second week of “Everything School” and we have gotten into the swing of things! We get our books for the week from the library through their hold system so it’s not a long wait or mission and otherwise a lot of them are available as ebooks through the catalog. I have to admit I love it and how they’re learning with each other. . . Thanks to @MDPLS programming through Coral Gables branch today we enjoyed an interactive animal storytime with Miami Children’s Museum, it was so good!!! Now that library programming is back hopefully lots of fun free virtual live supplements will come into our lives and fill a part of the day with productive and fun distance learning. conscious uncoupling. 2020 marks the year that we embark on separate journeys and stop living together. it’s been a year since we initiated the reformulation of our relationship from partners to co-parents and it feels like a huge accomplishment to get to where we are today in our own lives and with each other. living together while we have been figuring out how to move towards independence has been equal parts intense, compassionate, beautiful, and trying in all the ways. there is no real formula for how to do it so we have been making it up as we go along. i can imagine it must be easier for some people to have a clean break. for us that felt more jarring and unstable for our son, so we decided to slowly spiral out of our relationship the same way we went in: a lot of pausing to ask if it still feels right, a lot of processing and communicating with each other, and a whole lot of patience. i’ve learned more about what true partnership means in the dissolution of our marriage than in the formation of it. somehow we’ve managed to uphold all of our promises and vows to each other through this because we recognized early on that you can’t promise forever and that to love and honor someones highest good sometimes means letting them go. even though our marriage was a temporary moment in time the lessons, love, and memories we shared will last a lifetime. i’m so grateful for the love we still share, for the friendship we will nurture and still put energy into, and for the family we are and will always be. #fullmoonfeels - @gatheredcanyon on Instagram

Before and After June 12th - August 21st . In 4th grade I started lifting weights and ever since then getting into the gym has never been a struggle for me. I’ve always enjoyed getting to release pent up tension as I tried to be better than I was the day before. The last few years things have shifted. I no longer find myself energized for the gym. My appetite is non-existent, my energy isn’t there, my mind is foggy, from the time I wake up I feel like I need to go back to bed, and, more often then not when I’m trying to sleep I lay wide awake. Depression creeps in and whispers all it’s favorite lies that always hit their mark and before you know it I went from being 190 lbs. to a low 170 lbs. I felt discouraged, disappointed, defeated, and angry as I loathed myself for mental issues that I never asked for or earned. Being misunderstood and fighting an invisible battle breeds more loneliness and the loneliness feeds the depression like a buffett. These days it’s nearly impossible for me to get through the gym doors without a energy drink in hand, but I’ve never been more proud of my effort and progress in the gym and in the kitchen. Today I’m back to 180 lbs. and I’m still fighting the same struggle to get and stay in the gym. . 90 days of shelter in place = 90 Jokes of the day. 🤣😊😂☺️🤪🙄😷At the beginning of lockdown Henry and the boys had a little chat on what was going on in the world and they collectively decided that the boys would commit to writing out a ‘Joke of the Day’ to put out each morning on our front steps to lighten the mood and spirits of our neighbours walking by during such uncertain times. We didn’t realize how such a small action would be so impactful. We have had so many people who have told us or even written to the boys just how much it brightened their day or how it was something they looked forward to on their daily walks or some even shared that they took pictures of the daily jokes to forward to friends each day. It’s official. Holland might be the nicest person I know. This morning she came into the bedroom, armed with a cup of coffee for me and three little hand written notes. She handed me the coffee and my note. She made a detailed scavenger hunt with different clues for each of us. At the end of the scavenger hunt we found ourselves in the back yard where she laid out a quilt and made us all breakfast. It was such an amazing act of kindness and she is creating such an amazing example for her younger brother. We’re pretty lucky to have a kid like her.
