Luis Diaz, hands on the steering wheel, still thinks he’s controlling this broken in half race car rolling on its side... Today, digital cameras have almost limitless buffers and take cards that can store thousands of images but not that long ago, for a crash, you had one roll of 36 exposures. That was it. This one was negative film. So shooting this from the starter stand of the California Speedway in Fontana on October 29, 2000 kind of went like this... Diaz racing to the checkered flag clips a car, flips in the air and lands on his head going 180 mph...camera burst then pause. Mario Dominguez crashes into him and drags him towards the start finish line...camera burst then pause...click pause...click again and pause to save on film as the two cars slide under the starter stand, I move to the other side of the stand and keep Diaz in the frame...Diaz’s car keeps sliding on its top...shoot a couple of frames and pause...then the car slides to the bottom of the track catches the edge of the track, rolls and drops on the track right side up...another quick burst and then wait for Diaz to get out of the car, click...click... end of roll. I take the roll to the Media Center to master photo editor Darrell Ingham who processes the roll in the restrooms and sends the images to The Getty pic desk. Designed these back in 2016. A retailer from Japan liked my presentation at @capsuleshow / @libertyfairs and they asked me put together another collection. Turns out, they were expecting to see actual, physical samples and not my sketches, which I couldnt produce because I spent all money on the booth/show in Vegas 😭. . Anyway, here are some throwaways. Whole thing was like 14 pieces, but Im still holding onto a few with the thought of developing them at some point. Yesterday was a difficult day for me and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Ralph Hudson. He left such an impression on anyone who was lucky enough to know him. The Philip Island Classic brought us together as he let me borrow his bike to race in Oz. His passion for going fast was so infectious and his stories were told without an ounce of ego. He went to Bolivia in 2018 & went 307mph at 68yrs young. His accomplishments & world record runs while impressive will never live up to the man he was. He was always there to make someone else’s life better. Going to miss my hour long phone conversions with Ralph but man am I lucky that I got to spend the time I did with him. My thoughts are with Leslie & Ralph’s family & friends. ❤️ - @pridmore43 on Instagram
