Anyone else feeling overwhelmed with any version of school and work and homemaking you’re trying to get done? My husband got to go back to the office for a couple weeks before it was shut down again because one of the limited number of people going to the office tested positive for COVID. The schools here have been in-person but are dropping one by one to a more modified approach, and I’m sure will soon be at home again. This is the main reason I chose to homeschool again this year (I have been for the last two anyway with Jane). I hate all the uncertainty and being at the whim of enormous change at any moment. I’d rather be in charge of the curriculum completely. . . It hasn’t been easy, especially during school portraits season and just fall portraits time, and who knows if I am keeping up even as well as I think I am. But it did mean that yesterday, instead of worrying about school closures, we had a family outing for my oldest son’s birthday (he is 19, if you don’t mind), because my senior son has Fridays off, we do “Friday Fun Day” in homeschool, and my husband was home and only worked half a day. I guess my college student didn’t have classes?! Ha! I didn’t even ask. He just watches them when convenient most of the time. I’m glad we had that extra day, because today was school portraits retakes at home for 5 hours and then editing for the rest of my life after that. We are at 11 over here. . . Oh, what did we do for our fun day? We went to Target and Costco. 😂😂😂😂 But for real, my kids love when they get to come to Costco, because I pretty much let them put anything they want in the cart. Naja jetzt lerne ich halt erst später🤷🏼‍♀️ Improvisation muss auch manchmal sein ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 Vorgestern, der 26. Juni, vor genau 4 Jahren wurde ich wegen meines starken Untergewichts in ein Krankenhaus eingeliefert. Ich sah schrecklich aus und war nicht mehr als eine leere Hülle. Ich fühle mich nicht danach, weiterzuleben und hab meine Lebensfreude komplett verloren. Ich war zu nichts in der Lage, konnte kaum aufstehen. Ich verweigerte die einzige Medizin, die mir geholfen hätte: Essen. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Jetzt, 4 Jahre später, hat sich alles um 180 Grad gedreht. Ich gehe in die Schule und kann mich dabei konzentrieren. Ich treffe mich mit Freunden und genieße die Zeit. Ich koche und esse und habe Spaß daran. Natürlich ist nicht alles perfekt und ich habe immer noch mit einigen Problemen zu kämpfen, aber ich kann mit Stolz sagen: Ich habe keine Anorexie mehr. Weder anorextische Gedanken noch Taten bestimmen meinen Alltag, sondern ich. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Es ist so überwältigend, wie viel sich einfach innerhalb kürzester Zeit komplett verändern kann. Ich bin so froh, dass ich nie aufgegeben habe, auch wenn ich oft kurz davor war. Ich habe es aus dieser heimtückischen Krankheit geschafft, mit und ohne Hilfe. Und zwar weil ich es wollte. Und das ist der key: den Willen zu mobilisieren. Aufhören mit „Ich kann das nicht“ sondern beginnen mit „Ich schaffe das“. it hasn’t rained in two days & my heart is more conflicted than it ever was. you asked me if i’d prefer sunlight over rain for a thousand days straight & still, i say, rain. but karachi has grown old, musti. she doesn’t dance with me in the rain anymore, & somehow she is content with blistering, boiling heat & old rotten newspapers & cups upon cups of chai, but when i ask her if she can tell me a story, oh does she begin. she tells me about streets flooded with rainwater in the night, yet dry as the sahara by the next crack of dawn, she tells me of treehouses & cricket bats in ramadan nights, she tells me about the mountains sewn into her 700 thread count skirts, & mini urban forests in her midsts, she tells me about her past, & boy, do i listen. but then she gets tired, musti. she shoos me away & tells me to let her sleep & mujhe dil nahi karraha usko chornay ka magar wo ankhain khol nahi rahi, & that mouth can’t manage to muster up a smile right now, & so, i slip out those blurry sliding doors, my eyes brimming with tears of poverty, hunger & chaos, closing them behind me, & oh musti, i sob. it’s raining but i don’t have her shaking, wrinkled hand in mine, for she doesn’t want to dance in the rain anymore, & when i ask her why, she tells me, her hair has turned whiter than the moon of the fourteenth, her limbs stay no longer in her control, she’s old now, & imran doesn’t seem to care, & even though i tell her that i’m there, & i care, she shrugs me off & turns her back to me. & i don’t want her to see my tears fall into the puddles of sewage, so i let my tears merge into the unwanted, cursed rain, & i just tell her it’s getting late & i should go. rest for the night, karachi. i’ll see you tomorrow. Malta has made a swift U-turn over its decision to seek the return of a giant shark tooth presented to Prince George by Sir David Attenborough.⁣ ⁣ The young royal was given the fossilised tooth from an extinct Carcharocles megalodon when Sir David visited Kensington Palace last week.⁣ ⁣ The 94-year-old naturist found the tooth during a family holiday to Malta in the late 1960s.⁣ ⁣ But after George was pictured with the tooth, Jose Herrera, Malta’s culture minister, suggested that he would be asking for it to be handed back to the country. My first rejection slip! 1966. Beverly Sky (who is now my best friend of more than 50 years) and I were counselors at Blue Mountain Camp. After the kids were asleep, we’d sit on the porch of our cabin, smoke weed, and write (me) and illustrate (her) our opus, Grimm Tales for Fairy Children. I recently found this in some old papers and tacked it up on my wall because I love thinking about those two girls who were just excited about making art. It didn’t matter that our book was silly, that no one in their right mind would ever want to read it, let alone publish it. What mattered was that we were wading into the waters of creativity and we liked it there. Beverly was already living the life of an artist. She was my first role model and inspiration that I could also live that life. I don’t think we were discouraged by the rejection. The fact that someone—even “the rejection slip sender”—thought our work was “a groove,” was validation enough. I wish I’d saved all my rejection slips over the years so I could come into a workshop and dump a dozen big garbage bags filled with them into the middle of the floor! I had a big but low key birthday a couple of months ago and decided that was the time to commission the ring of my dreams from Brisbane jeweler @rickjobson @anthonysfinejewellery who I’ve admired and respected for a long while. I met (a few times 😆, plus a few phone calls) with Rick and we brainstormed this beauty together that combined some of the diamonds from my engagement ring with a beautiful new golden sapphire and some other coloured gems.
