Last week we shared the interior of 383 George Street, here is what it would have looked like from the street around that time. The lion featured on the receipts also hung above the entrance to the store! . This section of the street was built for Thomas Bradburn around 1860 and was likely designed by John H. Selkirk from Buffalo, New York. . Next door to Fair’s was the H. LeBrun and Co. menswear store at 381 George Street. LeBrun’s was established in 1873 and later occupied the spaces beside the Bank of Toronto on both George Street and Hunter Street from the early 1900s until the late 1920s. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN #24 N E Brotchie Pharmacy 21 Keys Street, Beaumaris Beaumaris’s enviable legacy of mid-century buildings is not just all about houses… there were churches, school buildings, banks, public halls… and Norm Brotchie’s chemist shop in Keys Road. The son of a pharmacist, Norm’s career arc was firmly predestined. Qualifying as a chemist in the early 1950s, we went soon had designs on a pharmacy of his very own. He eyed a potential location far south across the river, down Beaumaris way. Keys Street had already burgeoned as a local retail hotspot by the mid-1950s, when Norm Brotchie engaged Peter McIntyre to design stylish new premises at No 21. The young architect rose effortlessly to the occasion with that you see before you: a simple edifice with recessed window-wall giving way to an interior with fantastically futuristic furniture and an eye-popping ceramic mural of overscaled pharmaceutical paraphernalia. Norm Brotchie’s Keys Street pharmacy remained a hallowed local dispensary for years and years… it was still running in the 1970s, after Norm opened a second outlet on the East Concourse. While the original shop was later converted into a medical centre, the mural was at least partly preserved and remained a nifty snippet of mid-century public art until its regretful obliteration in 2007. Sometimes the work of local government is one parking spot at a time. A constituent reached out to request the No Parking Any Time sign be moved to match the pedestrian safety bump out. Although what happened overnight set in motion the events of the following day, the greatest losses started in the early morning hours of June 1st. The gun battle that lasted throughout the night kept immediate threats to black Tulsa at bay but by daybreak the tables started to turn in the most disastrous way. Many Greenwood citizens either fled for safety or were defending their property until being outnumbered by the oncoming mob. Some escaped unharmed while others who peacefully surrendered were still shot. Police and National Guard began taking the remaining blacks into protective custody but in the process left Greenwood vulnerable to all out attack. As the white mob marched into Greenwood from all sides, their mission seemed clear: after looting the properties, they were to be set on fire. This was repeated until 40 blocks of Tulsa was reduced to rubble and ash. *These photographs were taken on June 1, 1921. I will be sharing more of these in an exhibit called “21 for ‘21” opening January 1, 2021 at @bws.gallery . The exhibition will showcase 21 composite images from the 1921 #tulsaracemassacre. Another street that was home to many of the rich and famous in Buffalo was Lincoln Parkway. Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux designed parkways to be pleasant roads connecting various parks. Lincoln Parkway connected Soldier’s Place to Delaware Park with a peaceful, tree-lined route with room for pedestrians, automobiles, and horses. Torontos Past Preserved: No better way to end this look at Wellesley St than a visit to the Paul Kane house at 56 Wellesley. The house that Torontonians saved. Built in 1853, it was home to Paul Kane a well know Toronto based, Canadian travelling artist. He built this cottage in his later years as he settled down while having a studio on King St. The house was owned by the family until 1903. It became a church hall for those who were hearing impaired. from 1925-73. The church built a large building in front of the house, effectively blocking it and well was hidden away for so long. When a developer bought the lot, they tore down the church building and discovered the Kane House. With neighbors who wanted the poor condition house demolished, Toronto preservation groups fought back and won !!! The city bough the property with help from the province. A park was built and the house was renovated. The house was included in o a new housing co-op in 1985.
