THE SMITHS con Strangeways Here We Come: el inesperado canto del cisne 🎧🇬🇧☠️ En este septiembre se cumplen 33 años de la edición del último disco en estudios de la banda de Manchester. A pesar de que en declaraciones posteriores sus cuatro integrantes sostuvieran que no había grandes conflictos internos para que implosionasen unos meses más tarde de la edición del LP, entre Morrissey y Marr había una tensión invisible que corroía los cimientos del grupo. La creciente tendencia de Johnny a colaborar con artistas por fuera de Smiths (Bryan Ferry, Pretenders, The The, Talking Heads más tarde) ponían a Moz en estado de celo constante, a punto tal de dedicarle la letra de la bella y explícita I Won’t Share You a su coequiper creativo y establecer un silencioso coto de caza que el guitarrista rompió con su partida. Desde lo estrictamente musical, Strangeways (nombre de la cárcel de Manchester) demuestra una enorme evolución en el sonido Smiths, con algunas capas de sintetizadores, arreglos de vientos y demás sutilezas propias de una agrupación que seguía dando pasos firmes hacia su cenit artístico. El disco contiene esa perfección pop de dos minutos de duración llamada Girlfriend In A Coma, con su delicado video promocional mostrando a un Morrissey en primer plano y esas imágenes de vieja TV inglesa tan afectas a su cantante, y hermosas composiciones como el melodrama Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Love Me, la sutil e hiriente Unhappy Birthday, el himno a la contradicción de Morrissey Paint A Vulgar Picture, la áspera Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before (con un gran video grabado en las entrañas urbanas de la ciudad), el grito de guerra irlandés A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours, la climática Death Of A Disco Dancer. Los fans acérrimos recibimos el disco en tiempo real con un gusto amargo, ya que vino acompañado por la inesperada noticia de la separación, pero este discazo de The Smiths fue un lujoso epitafio de una de las más grandes bandas del Reino Unido.
