This gem of downtown Long Beach was built in 1925 as Middough’s Boys and Mens Shop and later became the Insurance Exchange Building. Designed by local architect and engineer Harvey Lochridge, the building is a Long Beach Historic Landmark and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. As part of their strong, ongoing stewardship of the building, the INEX Architectural Committee commissioned a painstaking restoration of the early, long-faded Middough’s advertising sign on the buildings facade. Congratulations to INEX for bringing a piece of history back to downtown and thanks to KC Restoration Co, Inc for executing the work! Вот мы идем вдоль каменного края; А над ручьем обильный пар встает, От пламени плотину избавляя. Как у фламандцев выстроен оплот Меж Бруджей и Гвидзантом, чтоб заранее Предотвратить напор могучих вод, И как вдоль Бренты строят падуане, Чтоб замок и посад был защищен, Пока не дышит зной на Кьярентане. Выше на русском, далее - на итальянском, писал Данте поэму по-итальянски, для широкого круга людей, так как латинский не всем был доступен. Мемориальная доска установлена в 1976 году, Обществом Данте Алигьери, которое продвигает итальянскую культуру вне Италии. Думаю, что честь Брюгге быть упомянутым Данте. Он словами не бросался. We are also mindful that our unique Islay operation is a full production site and is home to everything from distillation to maturation to bottling. Therefore, it’s necessary to have our large team of 85 Laddie Crew on-site and the safety of our team and the community, followed by the on-going supply of our product remain the number one priority. This inevitably means that we cannot offer an experience in line with our expectations or the expectations of those who have come to know what a visit to Bruichladdich should feel like. As such, sadly Bruichladdich remains closed to visitors for now. Whilst this is a disappointment for all of us, we can share the news that we will use this extended period of closure to carry out vital maintenance and renovation work to the visitor centre. This means, that when we open again in early Spring 2021, you will be welcomed back to fantastic new facilities and visitor experiences. In the meantime we will continue to run our Distillery website shop with all products and merchandise available and will also be launching an Islay “click & collect” service for those visiting Islay who wish to purchase items. I’m a direct descendant of Charles Brown who opened this dairy in 1790. These pictures were taken in 1903, the year it was demolished to make way for the Camden Town tube station which stands to this day! I like to reflect on my family history of running family businesses in this great city. It’s with a sense of extreme pride that I’ve returned to the town where my ancestors grazed their kine on Primrose Hill, among our many links to this ancient city. . Current Covid-19 guidance means that we need to make some changes to the way the Gallery works over the coming months. We will continue to support artists by displaying work in the Galleries at Stour Space and the Baths.   The shows will be able to be seen without a ticket from 8am until 10pm, though we will be restricting the number of people in the galleries during busy times. However we won’t be holding an opening night for the shows, and we will run a limited number of workshops that are often part of the month-long exhibitions.   We will continue to promote artists online through our social media and the new YouTube channel Stour Sessions. We hope you understand that this decision was made in order to best protect the artists, the visitors and our staff. 🔶 Friday Fact 🔶 Did you know that Walton Lodge was built by a dairy owner? Walton Lodge on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton was built in the 1880s and opened in 1904 under King Edward VII’s rule.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The laundry dates back to 1880, when dairy owner Charles William Newland and his wife set up a domestic laundry service from their home.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 1885 the family expanded into a large house on Coldharbour Lane called Walton Lodge, abandoning the dairy and Walton Lodge Sanitary and Steam Laundry was born.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ By 1904, a new house with adjoining laundry had been built on the large plot of land, with the company opening up branches across south London.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Walton Lodge Laundry managed to survive the 1920’s recession and kept on operating through two world wars, it remained a family run business throughout and in the late 1950s supplemented their long-standing domestic laundry and bagwash service with dry cleaning.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Walton Lodge served as a commercial steam press laundry until operations ceased in 2014. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @brixtonlaundry has been reinvented as a restaurant. Some sad news incoming for all our listeners, hosts, friends and fam.  Due to irreconcilable differences with our landlords we will be forced to leave our current space in the Baltic Triangle, with an expected move out date at the end of October.   To simplify a very complex and murky situation - the landlord is looking to sell the building and the land around it for redevelopment. He’s holding out for a buyer, so he’s only offering very short lease extensions of 6 months or less whilst demanding the full rental amount for a building that’s only half full - thanks to Covid-19. We can’t fill the empty spaces without guarantee of any tenancy terms, but because we haven’t filled the spaces, our landlord won’t guarantee our tenancy terms.    It’s a checkmate situation.   As we have been unable to reach an agreement with the landlord, we are unable to stay.     It’s been an exhausting process that’s been ongoing and we’ve decided it’s time to move on. We want to focus our time and effort on radio, broader plans, our hosts and community of listeners. We want to put our efforts into finding a new location rather than attempting to fight for incremental slivers of time at Jamaica St. Whilst we might be exiting the studio, Melodic Distraction itself and all radio will categorically continue. We’re not going anywhere digitally, we are simply on the move. Puts ‘Together Wherever’ in a whole new light, hey?    While we don’t currently have a plan for where we’re moving to, we’ll be grafting around the clock over the next month to find somewhere bigger and better. Hold tight to find out our plans - and how you can help us. Any support, suggestions or straight up wise words would be hugely appreciated as moving ain’t easy especially through these weird times.  We are planning for a transition period throughout October to a new location for the 1st November. Today I went to London! I went to places that refer to Amy winehouse and the beatles (some of my favourite musicians). So, first of all, I went to Camden where Amy winehouse lived. There are many things in memory of her in Camden. We visited the ‘Amy Winehouse statue’ sculpted by Scott Eaton. It was honestly amazing! We then saw her plaque on the Camden walk of fame which was awarded to her back in March. I also managed to spot little paintings and art pieces around the town. And then, I went to see her house xxx I put a little note amongst others to tribute to her and saying how much I admire her xxx (I did get a bit emotional) but I am happy about how she is always remembered in the hearts of many xxx she was and will always be a true and amazing artist and I will love her forever! I honestly advise going to Camden even if you aren’t an Amy winehouse fan!
