The Pyramid in Sale was one of the last Egyptian style cinemas to be built in England. — Built in 1933, it was designed as the Pyramid Theatre by architect Joseph Gomersall. The Egyptian theme of the cinema extended to the programme (which featured hieroglyphics) and an Egyptian style organ for theatre productions. — The cinema closed in 1984 but the building became listed in 1987 – although its original clock and name have been lost from the façade. 7-9 Rathbone Street used to be Jacksons Garage and during World War 2 it was commandeered for an Auxiliary Fire Service substation. At around midnight on 18 September 1940 it was directly hit by a bomb, partly demolishing the building and killing civilians, as well as seven members of the Auxiliary Fire Service. Last Friday 18 September a small memorial ceremony took place at the site to mark 80 years to the day since the firefighters were killed and to pay tribute to the bravery of one of the survivors who acted quickly to save other lives at the site. Auxiliary fireman Alfred George Abrahart, auxiliary fireman Arthur Batchelor, leading auxiliary fireman Jack Bathie, leading auxiliary fireman George Bowen, auxiliary fireman Robert William George, auxiliary fireman Benjamin Mansbridge, and auxiliary fireman Myer Wand all died. Nivea Men, the official men’s grooming partner to Liverpool FC, has unveiled a giant mural in Liverpool city centre to celebrate its long-standing partnership with the team and to congratulate it on its League championship win. Devised by Carat UK and Posterscope together with Mural Republic, the striking mural features a hyper-real recreation of a photo of the players embraced in a hug and is supported by a digital out of home takeover throughout the city. Trying to live life before dying. This is the mantra I try my hardest to preach, but I’ve not been the best at following my own advice. For the past two years I’ve been flat out with the gin, apparel brand, consultancy and now starting out on my property development journey that I’ve not had a minute to stop. I’m up every morning at the crack of dawn and still working late at night, with weekends counting as ‘working days’ too. It was a very welcome break this week then when my gorgeous wife (we got married last week!) @mackintosh_debs took me to @crieffhydroresort for our honeymoon. We had an amazing time and made the effort to properly relax and recharge the batteries. The staff at the resort were all fantastic and really went out their way to ensure the guests had an amazing experience. It was a magical moment for us when Vasilis Papas was playing on the piano and we danced to The Ellie Badge (from Up) in the ballroom with not a care in the world, whilst other guests watched on. Sometimes you’ve just got to say ‘so what’ and live life. Visiting Manchester recently, Lucy stayed at 4 Star Hotel Indigo, ideally located in the heart of the city on the edge of the bohemian Northern Quarter. Have you been down to Bathurst & Lakeshore lately? Big things are afoot. Loblaws’ historic façade has been rebuilt and the long-awaited 21st century grocery store has finally opened its doors. In late 2015, the careful dismantling of the iconic art deco warehouse structure began. Brick by brick. Stone by stone. Today we’re back at Borough Market for our post yoga oysters. I’ve been thinking about how Londoners have literally been eating oysters in this exact spot for almost a thousand years. I’m a direct descendant of Charles Brown who opened this dairy in 1790. These pictures were taken in 1903, the year it was demolished to make way for the Camden Town tube station which stands to this day! I like to reflect on my family history of running family businesses in this great city. It’s with a sense of extreme pride that I’ve returned to the town where my ancestors grazed their kine on Primrose Hill, among our many links to this ancient city. . Some sad news incoming for all our listeners, hosts, friends and fam. Due to irreconcilable differences with our landlords we will be forced to leave our current space in the Baltic Triangle, with an expected move out date at the end of October. To simplify a very complex and murky situation - the landlord is looking to sell the building and the land around it for redevelopment. He’s holding out for a buyer, so he’s only offering very short lease extensions of 6 months or less whilst demanding the full rental amount for a building that’s only half full - thanks to Covid-19. We can’t fill the empty spaces without guarantee of any tenancy terms, but because we haven’t filled the spaces, our landlord won’t guarantee our tenancy terms. It’s a checkmate situation. As we have been unable to reach an agreement with the landlord, we are unable to stay. It’s been an exhausting process that’s been ongoing and we’ve decided it’s time to move on. We want to focus our time and effort on radio, broader plans, our hosts and community of listeners. We want to put our efforts into finding a new location rather than attempting to fight for incremental slivers of time at Jamaica St. Whilst we might be exiting the studio, Melodic Distraction itself and all radio will categorically continue. We’re not going anywhere digitally, we are simply on the move. Puts ‘Together Wherever’ in a whole new light, hey? While we don’t currently have a plan for where we’re moving to, we’ll be grafting around the clock over the next month to find somewhere bigger and better. Hold tight to find out our plans - and how you can help us. Any support, suggestions or straight up wise words would be hugely appreciated as moving ain’t easy especially through these weird times. We are planning for a transition period throughout October to a new location for the 1st November. To be honest, we’re actually quite excited about it. Commute to work, don’t commute to work, yep we all know the confusing drill! Thought I’d share my #bostonmanor tube station card with you (meant to do it yesterday but as Monday was my first day back after a week off I got a bit sidetracked) We may not be commuting so much but all my station cards are proving popular at the moment. Just before the March lockdown I finally added my local station (Northfields) to my card collection, plus a few more of my favourites on this historic little stretch of the Piccadilly line. As a closet architecture buff I love all these stations designed by renowned architect Charles Holden. Boston Manor Station originally called Boston Road opened in 1883 by the District Railway. It was reconstructed in 1932 when the Piccadilly line was extended to Hounslow, to become the Grade II-listed building we love & use today. Any guesses how much I’ve got on my Oyster card?
