I sewed this banner in 2013 at the @tidesinstitute (image 1: Forward out of darkness, leave behind the night, forward out of error, forward into light // NVM the dark=bad, light=good overtones), inspired by Suffragette banners from the early 1900s (image 2). Women have been fighting for our rights for over 100 years. (Image 3: The Silent Sentinels were a suffragist group that were the first people ever to picket at the White House in 1917.) Lets continue this fight, standing on the shoulders of a true giant, RGB, and wade into partisanship not because we want to, but because we have to (image 4). Lets become the ones we are waiting for, as @AOC nailed it in a recent post (images 5-6: Because no one politician is the answer. YOU are the answer. Mass movements are the answer). .. Everyday theres more reasons for grief, disillusionment, despair, outrage, anger, numbness and pain. But we cant be hopeless and helpless. They wont make space for our bodies and voices, much less for our joy, culture, and expression—we have to make those spaces. But being a Muslim I am only upto clear some misconceptions created due to Shia Sunni conflict, which are now effecting us as a Muslim as well. Unfortunately Shia and Sunni became two major denominations of Islam. They may differ in their opinions or practices But dividing Deen upon their disagreements is not normal and its not acceptable at all. Starting with the first misconception about Muharram. One of the saddest part is that people still classify it as a Shia month which is totally wrong and its not all about mourning.Being a Sunni as well we cannot deny the importance of 10th Muharram and its events. Hazrat Moosa (A.S) triumphed over the Pharoah, relief for Prophet Nuh (A.S) was on ’Ashura and even Qiyamat or the Day of Resurrection will occur on 10th of Muharram. As we accept all these events, the same way we cannot devalue the sacrifices and bravery of our Beloved Prophets Beloved Grandson Imam Hussain. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said Hussain is from me and I’m from Hussain. While in this dispute we forgot what actually happened. The clash is increased to the level that we cannot easily discuss our points with each other. We dont need to be a part of any sect to respect the holiness of this month.Its not about being Shia or Sunni, its about being a Muslim!!!!!! _______________________________________________ Before being an extremist make sure you havent started losing your own Deen. Recently her love of cellaphane set her page into a spiral of awesomeness as she was featured on page after page. Check out her page now and see if you can see the post that inspired this one. We absolutley love what she did but wanted to adapt it so Harlow (8 months), could safely hold and look through something without breaking it instantly. We cut two pieces of cardboard out with four shapes, stuck cellaphane in between them (the full length) and glued them together. A part of me has always wanted to be a bit altruistic. A bit selfless. Ive found myself wanting to be someone who people messaged whenever they were in a bad place. Someone whos always there for someone. No matter what was going on in my own life. It brings me peace, I guess. Knowing I can make someone feel better. I dont like the thought of my friends feeling alone, feeling sad or upset and me not knowing about it. It sort of makes me feel worthless. Like Ive failed at something. Failed at being a better person I guess. And so I like to listen, to hear, to sit back and let people rant about why theyre upset and what is going wrong in their life. And after that I try and talk to them. To make them feel better. To let them know that theyre not alone. And that its going to be okay one day. But deep down I silently question myself : Will it though? Will it ever be any better for them? I persist myself to answer, to think of anything I can do to make them feel better. And you see thats where I trip sometimes. Thats the point when I realise how helpless one can be. How much you can want to change a persons life but you cant. It makes me weak. It haunts me how I am unable to help my friend who is depressed, how I am unable to to help a friend who silently wants to kill himself. It haunts me that no amount of my sweet talks will help someone I care for, get away from their toxic family. It takes me down a dark road. A gloomy alley where I see no end to this path. With a constant feeling of guilt buried within. Times like these I like to remind myself that Im human too. That Im not God. And there is no better one than the one who is. Times like these I tell myself Im just as human as the person in front of me. That I cant help everyone no matter how hard I try.  And that shouldnt make me weak. It should make me compassionate, caring, empathetic. But not weak. I tell myself that amidst all the fixing I claim I want to do, the one thing I shouldnt allow to break is myself. This is a difficult subject to address and is often taboo in many cultures & religions. This subject is not ‘haram’ it is not ‘shameful’ & it is NEVER the victims fault. Let’s delve into the statistics; roughly, only 5% of reports end up with a conviction of the perpetrator. In the year of 2017 the CSEW estimated that 20% of women & 4% of men have experienced some type of sexual assault since the age of 16 & only 15% of these cases are reported to the police. On estimate, 11 men/women experience rape/attempted rape/sexual assault in England & Wales every hour. 90% of victims of rape know their rapist prior to the offence. In France, roughly 206 rapes occur every day, so that’s about 9 victims an hour. They also concluded that 1 out of 10 women are victim of rape at least once in their lives. Get this through your head: women rape/sexually abuse men, men rape/sexually abuse women, women rape/sexually abuse women, men rape/sexually abuse men. Don’t think it can only go one way. I am sorry that nobody believed you. I am sorry that your family told you to keep quiet. I am sorry the police didn’t do a single thing. I am sorry that you were made fun of once opening up.
