Today is #worldchimpanzeeday and inspired by the campaign of @our.legaseed ’Primates Are Not Pets’ I decided to research wet markets in Indonesia and surprisingly even found one in the “Instagram Paradise“ - Bali...🌴 . This morning I packed my bags and drove to Bali‘s Satria Market, in Denpasar, which sells everything from bats and monkeys to exotic birds, snakes, and fish. 🐒🐧🦎🐍 . When I arrived and saw all of these different animals trapped in small cages with no space to move... I felt shocked and couldn’t believe my eyes. I walked through the market to get a closer look and there I saw the chained monkey...The seller told me that this monkey is from the neighbour island Sumatra and I could have the monkey for a price of only 60€... . Scientists say they have successfully extracted eggs from the last two remaining northern white rhinos, a step on the way to possibly saving the subspecies from extinction. Ten eggs were harvested from the female rhinos, named Najin and Fatu, at the @olpejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The scientists hope to use them to create viable embryos that can be transferred into surrogates, as neither of the donor rhinos can carry a pregnancy to term. The next step is to select female southern white rhinos, another rhino subspecies, at Ol Pejeta to serve as surrogate mothers. Liebman argued that the term “person” in law describes an entity with legally protected rights to whom others owe a duty of care. Justice the horse and other nonhuman animals are entities who individually bear legally protected rights under Oregon’s animal cruelty law. One of my favorite frogs taxa are definitely the genus Gastrotheca, commonly known as marsupial frogs, because females have a pouch on the dorsum where eggs are brood. Marsupial frogs are specially diversified along the Andes, reaching elevations major than 4000 masl. I started my career as herpetologist in 2003, when discovered the species of the photos in a remote paramo of Peruvian Andes. Posteriorly, I had the honor to name this species in 2005, as Gastrotheca phalarosa, with the legendary herpetologist Bill Duellman. Two new cool looking Geckos from Rishi Valley, Andhra Pradesh India published today in Zootaxa! Both have been named after the Typelocality, Rishi Valley and also happens to be from @geckoellas School! How cool is that! Cnemaspis rishivalleyensis sp. nov. belongs to C. mysoriensis clade and Hemidactylus rishivalleyensis is morphologically similar to H. treutleri, both from H. murrayi clade. Abstract is pasted below: Two new species of geckos from the genera Cnemaspis and Hemidactylus are described from a granite outcrop in the Rishi Valley, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, India. Cnemaspis rishivalleyensis sp. nov. and Hemidactylus rishivalleyensis sp. nov. are presently known only from their type locality and are 8.7 % and 10.9 % divergent from their closest known sister species, respectively. The new species are allied to the mysoriensis and murrayi clades of South Asian Cnemaspis and the brookii group of Indian Hemidactylus, respectively. The two new species can be diagnosed from regional congeners by the number and arrangement of femoral and precloacal pores and poreless scales separating these series, body size, the number of tubercles in paravertebral rows, the number of enlarged tubercles around mid-body, the number of ventral scales across mid-body, the number of lamellae beneath digit IV of pes and manus, and subtle differences in colour pattern. Four endemic geckos now have their type localities within 10 km of each other, Cnemaspis graniticola and Cyrtodactylus rishivalleyensis from Horsley Hills and the two new species from Rishi valley. The two new species are also the third endemic species each of Cnemaspis and Hemidactylus from Andhra Pradesh. There’s some exciting news coming from the Maryland OSV! The first of three federally protected Loggerhead Sea Turtle nests is due to hatch in the very near future! Now that hatching is imminent, a short-term beach closure will be installed at Km 20.5 and the bullpen will be temporarily moved to Km 18, to go into effect on Wednesday August 19th at 10:00 am. The purpose of the full beach closure is to reduce tire ruts, eliminate the risk of driving impacts to the tiny hatchlings, and minimize light pollution near the nest site. Hatchlings are very sensitive to light sources at night, such as vehicle headlights and beach fires. They can become disoriented enough that they exhaust their limited energy resources crawling in the wrong direction. Disorientation can also occur when they don’t have smooth access to the ocean and get caught in tire ruts. In either situation, they may never reach the ocean. The temporary OSV closure will be removed after a final excavation confirms that all viable eggs have hatched. The closure is expected to last no more than 1-2 weeks. *Warning- graphic content* We are so privileged to live in a conservation community here in Victoria Falls. A few days ago on a night patrol, a female leopard was spotted with a horrific wound caused from a poachers snare. During a team effort (those listed below), a cage trap with meat inside was put out with a hope to catch and save this leopard. At 1910hrs last night, she came to the trap and was immobilized, treated and relased back into the wild by this dedicated team of people. Video is of her being carried from the cage trap to be treated. Look for the snare and wound around her body. wow! 😍 👉🏻 give @seanweeklywildlife a follow for some incredible wildlife photography inspiration 🙌🏻 this one is just awesome!! #repost --- I had a great evening Sunday night shooting for the first time with @canonuk R5 with a local photographer @toms206 photographing a Badger family local to him in the Brecon Beacons. It was incredible to be so close to them without having to use a hide. A credit to Thomas hard work getting this family used to him and trusting him for the last few years that he has been visiting them. I decided after seeing a nice ridge on one of the sett entrances that i wanted to get a nice back-lit image. Setting up one single off camera flash positioned behind the entrance was the best option for this shot. The big footed Salamander was recently rediscovered in a cave system in one of Sierra Gorda ancient cloud forests. The @ElPasoZoo is mourning the loss of their 21-year old Amur leopard, Ivan. Ivan was diagnosed with a degenerative kidney disease for over 2 and a half years. After much discussion between his animal care team, the veterinary staff, and zoo management the decision was made that the best course of action would be euthanasia. Were you able to guess this lesser-known species? The Indian Chevrotain, also known as the mouse deer is a member of the Tragulidae family. There are a total of ten species of the mouse deer in Asia, and a single species is found in West Africa; together they are known to be the smallest hoofed ungulates in the world. They are a shy herbivore species that prefer staying solitary and are active during both evening and night time. Chevrotains are great at camouflaging, so much so that a member of this family called Silver-backed chevrotain (discovered in 1910) was not photographed in the wild until 2019! The Indian Chevrotain is partial to riverine forests along with deciduous, semi-evergreen and evergreen forests as they never choose to reside away from water. Their small size (barely 30 cm) means they need to be experts at hiding to avoid predators; they usually make a den in the hollow part of a large tree trunk or in thick ground foliage to hide when under threat. While studies about this species are scarce, the shrinking of their habitats through fragmentation and degradation, along with intense poaching pressure are attributed for the decline in mouse deer populations in the wild. They say based on the markings on his shell that this tortoise survived both the Turkey Farm Road Fire in July AND the 2005 Mill Creek Fire! This lucky elephant was found and rescued just in time by community members in Nannapa Community Conservancy. NRT staff joined Nannapa rangers, @loisaba_conservancy and @kenyawildlifeservice to rescue this bull elephant, who had got himself well and truly stuck in the mud. The elephant was spotted by local herders, who immediately alerted Nanapa manager Jackson Lekumoisa. Jackson coordinated all the support teams, who worked together to rescue the elephant from what would have been certain death. Tired but free, the young bull plodded away uninjured. New work for @vogue with @kateupton, @polarbearsinternational and @canadagoose. Shot on location near the Arctic Circle in North-Eastern Canada, the story aims to highlight the vital work that the scientists at @polarbearsinternational do to raise awareness around climate issues effecting the polar bear population in Churchill, Manitoba. Definitely up there as one of the most amazing projects I’ve ever worked on. It was absolutely incredible to see these animals roaming around in the wild and heartbreaking to hear about the problems they face. While shooting in Cuba in 2019 on #assignment for @nabu_international and camping in the #alejandrodehumboldt national park, this strikingly beautiful knight #anole, the endemic Anolis baracoae, with almost half meter lenght the largest anole species in the Caribbean, entered my hut. I was suoer excited about this encounter but had to catch it before releasing it, which was something it didn’t appreciate much as it kept threatening and attacking me. Once satisfied with its aggressive display, the anole climbed a nearby tree where it tried to conceal itself with the surrounding vegetation. NACEN LAS TORTUGAS DE CABOPINO❗ La noche del 22 de septiembre de 2020 a las 22:05 h; 51 días después de la puesta del nido, comenzaron a eclosionar los huevos en la playa de Cabopino y las primeras crías de tortuga boba (Caretta caretta) que se tienen constancia en Málaga emergieron de la arena. Al menos 38 ejemplares han nacido en Cabopino a lo largo de la noche (número que podrá aumentar a lo largo del día de hoy). Todos los ejemplares nacidos han sido recogidos y se liberarán dentro de un año, cuando tenga el caparazón endurecido y de esta forma asegurar mejor su supervivencia (la mortalidad de esta especie en los primeros años de su vida es muy alta). Os dejamos con las primeras fotos tomadas por nuestros voluntarios la pasada noche en primicia ¡Desearles suerte a estas pequeñitas! Ampliaremos la información a lo largo del día: Datos de interés: 1º El nido original tenía 72 huevos y fue encontrado en la playa de los Boliches (Fuengirola). 2º Tras estudiar que el lugar de la puesta era inestable y se corría riesgo de inundación, se decidió trasladar los huevos a un lugar seguro, escogiendo la playa de Cabopino. 3º 60 huevos fueron enterrados en Cabopino mientras que los 12 restantes fueron dados a Bioparc Fuengirola 4º Voluntarios del CREMA así como de Produnas han estado vigilando el nido las 24 h del día, para asegurar el desarrollo correcto de los huevos y evitar vandalismo. 5º Este es el 1º caso conocido de un nido de esta especie en Málaga (que normalmente prefieren aguas más cálidas para reproducirse y poner sus huevos). - @auladelmarmalaga on Instagram

Las cumbres del Himalaya son un mundo pétreo, sin árboles y con una vegetación escasísima. Parece que no pueda haber vida, pero… a 18 grados bajo cero y cuando el día está a punto de terminar, llega el momento esperado. Coloco un ojo en el telescopio y descubro a un leopardo de las nieves que camina lentamente en lo alto de un paso de montaña.
En pocos minutos la oscuridad de la noche hará invisible al felino. Antes, su silueta se recorta unos instantes contra la nieve a casi 5.000 metros de altura (fíjaros en su cola enorme).

In 2018, live pangolins were found wandering the streets in Metro Manila, some 600 kilometers away from their natural habitat in Palawan. These pangolins were escapees from traffickers’ and/or buyers’ facilities for wild meat consumption. The species is known as Philippine Pangolin, which can only be found in Palawan faunal region in the Philippines. Over the two decades from 2000–2019, an estimated equivalent of 7,634 Philippine Pangolins were documented to have been confiscated from trafficking and illegal trade in the Philippines, with a nine-fold increase recorded in just 2018–2019. Another video of Flanders’ fast-growing wolf pups has been released. New video footage of the wolf pups born in Flanders last spring has been released by the Institute for Nature and Forest Research (Inbo). The pups even discovered the hidden wildlife camera and nosed it a bit before moving on. Born in early May, the pups have grown immensely, though are still extremely playful. While four pups were caught on video footage in June, only three can be seen in the latest footage, recorded by hidden wildlife cameras. According to Inbo, the fourth pup has not been seen since July. The institute cannot say with certainty whether the pup is still alive. Many wolf pups, however, do die in the first few months of life. The litter of wolves was born to August and Noëlla, the only two adult wolves currently living in Flanders. It was the first time in 150 years that wolf pups were born in the region. While several other adult wolves have spent time in Flanders over the last few years – most recently a lone male called Billy – they have all moved to other territories. Billy was last seen this summer in Germany. The wolves are mostly at home in Limburg, sometimes crossing into Antwerp province. The wolves have been responsible for the death of livestock in the area, mostly sheep, but also three llamas, a kangaroo and a cow. This had led farmers to ask for help in protecting their livestock and to be given access to tracking devices so they know where the wolves are at any given time. - @flanderstoday on Instagram

#DerbyDiaries Sam Franklin- I remember getting up one morning with tears in my eyes because I was unsure if I was going to be able to keep riding. It was day 8 or 9, the back spasms, which rendered me breathless every time I moved during the night, had finally broken me. Molly and Rachel were so concerned they grabbed @TheIntrepidMedics’ Andrei but there wasnt much he could do at that point. Two summers prior, I was laying in a hospital bed, I’d fallen 40ft while rappelling down a rock face. I was lucky to be alive, but had managed to break my back, wrist and cracked my sternum. The derby was my two year anniversary from the accident and the biggest reason I signed up. Flash forward to the present, I told myself the pain was definitely not worse than falling of a cliff, but that was a lie. But I did what any person insane enough to do this race would do, finished crying, put a smile on my face, lit a cigarette and said fuck it lets go. The fun part of it all was the people I got to ride with, Molly and Rachel kept moral up. We’d spend 14 hours a day racing, laughing and getting to know each other. Helps also when you have a fast horse. One day, I pulled this beautiful chestnut stallion who only knew one speed, fast. The whole leg was through a desert with hundreds of goats, we had navigated to this sandy road next to a river so he had plenty of room to just haul ass. I remember at one point laying horizontal across his back trying to stop him so I could catch my breath after about 5 miles at a full gallop and he showed no signs of stopping. I dont think I will ever ride a horse quite like him ever again. I think the whole race for me was an adventure. Going across the world, never riding an endurance race in my life, not knowing anyone before stepping off the plane in Mongolia’s Capitol- UB, it was all definitely out of my comfort zone. The personal growth I experienced from the Mongol Derby could never be measured. I would say Mongolia as a whole changed my personality/self for the better. I came back knowing more than I ever did about myself and grew exponentially spiritually and as a person. *story continued in the comments below - @mongolderby on Instagram

One of the many perks of filming in the Bush is witnessing mutualistic relationships first hand. Can you spot the oxpeckers sitting on the rhino? These two share a very interesting relationship. Oxpeckers land on rhinos and eat ticks and other parasites that live on their skin. The oxpeckers get food and the beasts get pest control.
