Surfers can be pretty disconnected from the history of the places we recreate. We often think of the “locals” as the rich white dudes born into families that own coastal property and have easy access to a particular surf spot. But the real locals, the original locals, are of course the indigenous people who recreated along those same coasts for thousands of years before white colonizers showed up, stole their land and pushed their communities inland. To shed some light on the indigenous history of iconic surf zones, we’re launching a column called “Whose Coast Are You Surfing?” on Surfer.com, starting with the Kumeyaay Nation’s deep San Diego roots. The beautiful shot above (by @theslipperysaltwaterchronicles) shows Kumeyaay tribe member Blue Eagle Vigil pushing visiting Native Hawaiian Puna Watson into a wave at La Jolla shores on a traditionally-made tule boat as part of the @nativelikewater program.
