Join us this Thursday at 6:30 PM in Shemin Auditorium for a lecture from artist and illustrator Judy Hewgill. _ Jody Hewgill is a Toronto-based artist, illustrator, and human dog-treat dispenser. Her detailed acrylic paintings employ pop-surrealism and are infused with references to 18th-century naturalist art to reflect the ageless and fragile human relationship with the natural world. Her paintings have been commissioned by National Geographic, Random House, Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, the United States Postal Service, and the U.S. Department of State (Earth Day, Declaration of Human Rights posters) among others. Her work has garnered numerous awards, including gold and silver medals from the Society of Illustrators, New York, and Best in Show from the Society Illustrators of Los Angeles. Her work is included in many illustration anthologies and award publications, including Taschen’s 100 Illustrators. Gertrud Arndt 5. Having returned to the Bauhaus Dessau in 1929 when her husband, Alfred, was hired as head of the interior design workshop, Gertrud Arndt found herself living in one of the teacher’s houses on the edge of the campus with no formal role at the school, and feeling bored and frustrated. Eager to focus on photography, she converted the bathroom into a makeshift dark room. . In 1930, Arndt began the series of Mask Portraits that would preoccupy her for several years. Throughout her time at the Bauhaus she had photographed friends, including a fellow weaving student Otti Berger, but became increasingly frustrated by the difficulty of expressing her vision through her subjects. Convinced that the process would be more productive if she posed for self-portraits, Arndt transformed herself into different female characters through dramatic make-up, exaggerated facial gestures and the theatrical outfits she created from the tulles, laces, ribbons, hats, collars, antique clothes and other knickknacks that Otti Berger had collected over the years. . “You just need to open your eyes and already you are someone else, or you can open your mouth wide, or something like that, and a different person has already appeared,” she said. “And if you dress up in costume as well… It’s like looking into the mirror and pulling faces.” Having designed the desired subject, Arndt then faced the technical challenge of photographing herself: a process that involved a broom, a stone and activating the shutter by pulling a long piece of black twine. Over the next three years, Arndt produced over 43 of her painstakingly planned self-portraits, each of which depicted a singular interpretation of female identity. This eccentrically decorated palace in Portugal is replete with tunnels, caves, and this stunning spiral staircase. Italian architect Luigi Manini designed the four-hectare estate called Quinta de Regaleira with its enigmatic buildings, believed to hide symbols related to alchemy, Masonry, the Knights Templar, and the Rosicrucians. The gardens are incredibly ornate. After succumbing to a fever of some sort in 1705, Irish woman Margorie McCall was hastily buried to prevent the spread of whatever had done her in. Margorie was buried with a valuable ring, which her husband had been unable to remove due to swelling. This made her an even better target for body snatchers, who could cash in on both the corpse and the ring. The evening after Margorie was buried, before the soil had even settled, the grave-robbers showed up and started digging. Unable to pry the ring off the finger, they decided to cut the finger off. As soon as blood was drawn, Margorie awoke from her coma, sat straight up and screamed. The fate of the grave-robbers remains unknown. One story says the men dropped dead on the spot, while another claims they fled and never returned to their chosen profession. Margorie climbed out of the hole and made her way back to her home. Her husband John, a doctor, was at home with the children when he heard a knock at the door. He told the children, “If your mother were still alive, I’d swear that was her knock.” When he opened the door to find his wife standing there, dressed in her burial clothes, blood dripping from her finger but very much alive, he dropped dead to the floor. He was buried in the plot Margorie had vacated. Margorie went on to re-marry and have several children. When she did finally die, she was returned to Shankill Cemetery in Lurgan, Ireland, where her gravestone still stands. Here we see a very atmospheric photo of the #WWII #memorial #sculpture which is titled Monument to the Fallen Fighters and Victims of Fascism from Slabinja, which honors the local people of this village who perished at the hands of Axis forces and their collaborators during the Peoples Liberation Struggle (1941-1945). The work consists of a roughly 15m tall stainless steel spire bisected by a red #concrete #triangle. This work is in a poor condition and even has been marred by bullet holes in some areas.
