The national outpouring of solidarity with BLM has me recounting my own experience with racism and vowing never to be silent again. A few years ago I was employed by @cinta_salon where after a few months, I raised concerns to management about coworker Alexandra McGregor (on IG as Mcgeezy or Hairisprettycool). After servicing an Asian American client, she went to the salon back bar and called the client a “Chinky Bitch”. . No action was taken for this and I resigned shortly after, tired of being subjected to daily microaggressions by her and feeling unsupported by management. Months later, she saw me at a public establishment and yelled racist slurs at me over and over “You’re a Chinky Bitch!” and followed it with a physical assault. I reported it to the Mission precinct where the investigating officer pursued it as a Hate Crime. I emailed Cinta Gibbons, managers Sara Watson and Mariela Bermudez expecting them to at least acknowledge the situation. I received no response. A year later, I had to block Alexandra McGregor on IG after she tried to to contact me. . Later I learned Cinta promoted her and employed her for several years after. This is a company who oversees countless employees between their downtown salon as well as thousands of students at 2 of their beauty schools in SF and San Jose. They had 2 chances to condemn these acts of racism/hate as well as uphold a Zero Tolerance policy for them but failed. Their silence and inaction spoke volumes and only enabled her to continue her behavior. . Cinta Salon’s recent IG post depicting a graphic of raised fists with different skin tones with a hollow “We’re All in This Together” feels empty. . As an Asian American, as a consumer, as an ally to the marginalized, I want to ensure that people/places I support with my time and money are not ones who support racism in any form and I pledge to call it out when I see it. I’m hopeful that now more than ever, many others will do the same. . Announcement: It is with great regret that we must postpone Social Avenue for the next 4 weeks. Due to restrictions coming into place in Trafford the local council have made a decision to suspend all large events and limiting the number of people allowed on site to 150. This is to include all staff and members of the public. The reasons given for this decision are due to the virus cases increasing. We are currently in the process of liaising with our health and safety team and the local authorities to find out how these figures are produced and what deems this ruling acceptable. In the region of 80+ staff members heavily relied upon our socially distant event series for 10 weeks, creating a vital source income during these incredibly hard times as well as shining a ray of hope upon the events industry here in the UK. We have worked tirelessly to implement every measure possible (with success we must add!) and this enthusiasm will not end there! The next 4 weeks of events are now postponed but not cancelled. We are working right now on organising new dates for these shows to go ahead under guidance from our local council. We ask please, for you to hold onto your tickets and help us to support this industry which we love so dearly. And about 100 other lessons. lol. For real. 1. Every task you do, every aspect of what you’re building, must be thought about so you can eventually delegate it. Not all of it, but nearly most of it. If you’re stuck “in” the business, then you catch more glass ceilings. 2. Mundane work also equals “details”. The details matter. You have to learn as much as possible and then you have to expand your approach into leveraging technology and systems to scale your efforts. 3. Too many people want to hire and source others right out at the gate. I believe you have to know what you’re hiring and sourcing for based on what you’ve already understood. People can’t take as much advantage of you when you know what you want, how you want it and what to look for. 4. I believe your art and passions are how you express your soul to the world, but you must also be willing to manage it financially and professionally so it can a.) become its greatest self, and b.) so it’s not taken away by someone else. 5. Vertically integrate. Owning different parts of the “supply”, “production” or “marketing” chain not only allows you to handle more of your tasks internally, and at better cost, but they can be licensed and leveraged externally to others. More on this later. 6. Be the person you’d want to learn from so you can help others grow just the same. I treat my people with honesty, integrity, transparency, directness, love and kindness. I want to help them drive their lane 150mph. 7.
