Vietnam Veteran Aircraft Mechanic Specialist O-1E Birddog (Forward Air Control) I was sent to Vietnam in May of 1965. I was in a Group of 1800 Airmen to start a new outfit of Forward Air Controllers Tactical Air Support Squadrons. The Groups Main Base was suppose to be at Pleiku AB in the Central Highlands and then from there the planes and crews would go out into the many airfields throughout South Vietnam. it seems that because Pleiku Air VBase was Mortared in February of 1965, that it was too damaged to be occupied by our Group of FACs. The Group was split up when we landed at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon. Half of the group went to Bien Hoa Air North of Saigon Base and the other Half went to Nha Trang Air Base near the coast off the South China Sea. I was with the Half that went to Nha Trang. once there at Nha Trang Air Base again we were split up, most of the group went to work on the C-123 Troop Carrier planes. The rest of the Group of 17 were sent to work on Five Special C-123s from Taiwan that were Top Secret, that was from the 1131st Special Activites squadron Detachment 9. My part of the Group picked to work on thee Top Secret Planes were picked because of our Clearences while working Stateside. The Planes had no Markings at all only a lett on the inside of the side entrance door. they were run by the CIA and MACV-SOG. They were flown by USAF Air Commando Pilots and Crew,and Chinese Nationalist Pilot and Crew. A few South Vietnamese special trained crew trained at Hurlburt Field in Florida were also crew on the plane. This split was beacuse our O-1E Birddog Aircraft were in Vietnam as of yet. it was the middle of July that our planes starting coming in and in the first part of August I was sent out in the field to DaNang AB with the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron (20th TASS) from DaNang I was sent again out in the field to Hue Citadel Airfield. Then sent up to Dong Ha airstrip clost to the DMZ (Demilitarlized Zone) some 6 miles from the Border of North Vietnam. while up at Dong Ha the FAC Pilot in the front seat and myself in the back seat as an Observer (Crew Chief Observer) would fly the length of the DMZ to Laos and Back. - @laroethomas on Instagram

To paint in broad strokes, there are three things which constitute a good suit; construction quality, fabric quality and quality of fit. Naturally, bespoke tailoring pays respect to all three facets, however as you move further down the rung - especially into RTW offerings, compromises are often made in order to make garments cheaper to produce. If we’re being pragmatic, construction quality - which encompasses such things as handwork and the internals of the jacket - and fabric will be the first to be compromised, as it’s easy to make savings here. The pattern, however, is more or less a fixed cost which remains. It seems ridiculous then, that luxury fashion houses would exhibit such flagrant disregard for the patterns on which their suits are cut. Ridiculous in the sense that they don’t fit anyone - they’re too tight, too short and too skinny. To develop and grade a pattern can be a rather expensive process, however monetary constraints are hardly a valid excuse for the multinational brands in question. For a commercially driven enterprise, it makes sense to bolster the bottom line with savings on construction and fabric quality. We don’t subscribe to such practices, however there is a commercial justification for doing so. There isn’t however - for obvious reasons - a commercial justification for cutting garments to idiotic patterns that don’t fit anyone. They simply aren’t saleable. On this day that year(1999) , I can’t but help think of how the officers and men of 2 Raj Rif would’ve felt? Was there an eerie silence? An uncomfortable emotion. Bitter sweet? They had captured Knoll, but at what cost? Three officers and many other men were now sleeping peacefully to never wake up. Meeting the officers and men, in other words; some of the survivors of the war of 2 Raj Rif was perhaps the most emotional part of my journey with #VijyantatKargil. None of them shed a tear. In fact most of them smiled, but I couldn’t help but think long and hard about the pain behind their eyes, once I would sit back in the car to go back. For isn’t that what a soldier always does, despite the emotion he may harbor: SMILE. Col. Praveen Tomar: was one of the first people I met. Since he was in Bombay. Robin and him had been coursemates. Not only did he very graciously invite me to sit and chat in his rather impressive office, he did so patiently with a smile for hours. While we sat, I saw the sun shifting from right into my face, to a soft retreating glow, as he told me of all the ‘fun’ they had together while at war. He told me of Robin’s innocence, their camraderie and the ‘debt’. The ‘debt’ that remained unpaid till date. Somehow, it has never left my thoughts. Brig Kala: was perhaps most generous with not just his hospitality, but also his time. He spent not one, but two back to back days with me, with Hav. Dan Singh on Day 2, tirelessly and rather patiently explaining both the battles that Robin was a part of. But the last story he told me, touched my heart. He spoke of how, once it ended, he stood next to the fallen heroes, saw their faces and swallowed the relentless lump that wouldn’t leave his throat. As their senior, his pain wasn’t just for a subordinate, he spoke of the ‘boys’ as if they were his sons. To witness their fights and their sacrifice the way he did, hadn’t been easy. One of my favorite memories of my father growing up was when he’d get me ready for school in the morning. He’d lotion my arms and legs and crack all my toes before putting my socks on. He would get so dramatic at the loud ones — letting out a big yelp then following it up with one of his childlike, hearty laughs. It was always something for me to look forward to, hoping that my little toes would elicit the loudest pop just so I could see my dad react in such a way. . He was a silly man (which one of my siblings accurately described as a little mischievous), full of stories, and had a work ethic unmatched by anyone I’ve ever met (my mom is a close second). I miss him. It’s been over a week since his passing and though my heart feels heavy at times I’m comforted in knowing that he’s no longer in pain and that my family has a guiding light with us always. A rare chance to see familiar photos in a new light! These are photos of the house at the time when Joy Kogawa lived there, carefully restored and colourized by Marija Stefanovic (@myretrophoto). Joy is with some of the neighbourhood kids in the first photo and with her brother, Timothy, in the other one. Did you know that seventeen years ago, on August 27, 2003, Joy Kogawa returned to Vancouver, and on a chance drive-by found that the house was for sale? The Kogawa Homestead Committee (later known as the Save Kogawa House Committee) was formed with the goal of preserving this historic place and began to fundraise to turn the house into a writers’ residence. Two years later, the house was sold before the group managed to get funds together. New owners renovated, building partition walls to create many small rental rooms and the beautiful wooden windows at the front of the house were replaced with vinyl. By 2005, the new owners began to inquire at City Hall about demolishing the house in order to rebuild. My grandparents came to the UK in the 70s, and worked for the NHS until their retirement. Being Indian, but born in Britain, sometimes I feel like I’m straddling two complex and intangible identities, especially when I’m confronted with questions like ’Where are you REALLY from?’ or asked why I’m brown, but have a ‘white’ surname. Like so many, the British empire and its lasting effects in India is entangled in my identity. But there is still a sense of national amnesia when it comes to Britain’s imperial past, an unwillingness to acknowledge what colonialism did and how its legacy lives on today. A false and romanticised version of events is still ingrained in our national story and rooted in our culture. This was clear just yesterday when our PM Boris Johnson proclaimed that we should end our ‘cringing national embarrassment about our history’, encouraging patriotic pride in Britain’s involvement in slavery and colonialism. I *wish* his opinion was uncommon, but a survey found that 59% of the British population think that the atrocities of empire were “something to be proud of”. (YouGov, 2014) It’s kind of unsurprising when you think about how much of our colonial history has been filtered or consciously covered up (google Operation Legacy). Our school curriculum excludes the ‘ugly’ bits of our national past, and this erasure perpetuates white supremacy in our education system and minimises past injustice and racism - further marginalising those whose ancestors have suffered because of it. This year research found that only 9% of GCSE students have studied modules that reference the British empire, and only 11% study modules that acknowledge Black people’s contribution to Britain. It was only when I started studying history at university that I really began to learn the full extent of British imperialism and its ongoing legacy - and there’s still SO much I don’t know. [Tugas Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini] Gadis bergaun merah di dalam foto itu sering kali diajak oleh orang tuanya untuk menjemput kedua kakaknya yang sudah masuk sekolah, kira-kira saat itu usianya kurang lebih dua tahun. Sepertinya sudah menjadi tradisi ketika awal tahun pelajaran toko-toko alat tulis, tas, sepatu dan seragam di serbu oleh pelanggan. Kala itu aku pun turut meramaikan toko-toko tersebut walaupun aku masih belum cukup umur untuk sekolah hehe. Singkat cerita aku disekolahkan di sekolah kecil dekat rumah yang muridnya hanya ada sekitar 10 anak. Namun ketika aku berusia 4 tahun, aku pindah ke TK Theresia Muntilan dan masuk kelas A kecil. Banyak pengalaman baru juga yang aku dapatkan di sekolah baruku seperti bisa mementaskan kolintang dan drumband serta aku mendapat teman baru yang bahkan beberapa dari mereka masih menjadi teman baikku sampai sekarang. This is one of the iconic photos of the Korean War. The photo caption says: With her brother on her back a war weary Korean girl tiredly trudges by a stalled M-26 tank, at Haengju, Korea. June 9, 1951. (U.S. Navy/Maj. R.V. Spencer, UAF) Often I have looked at this photo wondering what their story is..Are they orphans? Are they alone? Did they survive? I couldnt find the answers to these questions. In June 1951, which is the date of this photo, the front lines battles were occurring in Chorwon area, north of Seoul, near the 38th parallel. Haengju is just north of the Han River near Seoul. So, these kids though impoverished, were safe and far from the front lines. This photo reminds me of the quote etched in our Nations Korean War Veterans Memorial. Our nation honors her sons and daughters who answered the call to defend a country they never knew and a people they never met.🇺🇸️ Kids like these and the Korean people must have looked as foreign to American troops as they did to the Koreans. Yet, these heroes answered the call to defend the freedoms of a country and a people they never met. Through their courage and sacrifices, South Korea was saved from the grips of a tyrannical North Korean communist regime and it now flourishes as one of the strongest free nations in the world. Over 1.9 million served in the Korean War and over 36,000 Americans were killed and over 8,100 became Missing in Action. My family was among those saved by these American heroes, and I was thus born to a free nation of South Korea after the war. The fact that I and millions of Koreans live in freedom is the legacy of all who fought to save South Korea from communist tyranny. I am forever grateful for my cherished freedoms, they died to give to me and to all Koreans. And though they may not have met us, we will always remember them and what they did for us. I will do all I can to make known these heroes and their stories. With unending gratitude, love, and respect to all who fought to defend the freedoms of the Korean people. Tanggal 30 September malam, sejumlah prajurit Tjakrabirawa pimpinan Letkol Untung bergerak menculik enam jenderal dan seorang kapten: Komandan TNI AD, Jenderal Ahmad Yani, Letnan Jenderal Suprapto, Letnan Jenderal MT Haryono, Letnan Jenderal S Parman, Mayor Jenderal DI Pandjaitan, Mayor Jenderal Sutoyo Siswomiharjo, dan Kapten Pierre Tendean. Jenazah mereka kemudian ditemukan di sebuah sumur di Lubang Buaya, Jakarta. Bola jedinou popravenou ženou v rámci politických procesov v Československu. Vďaka svojej neústupnosti sa stala symbolom odporu proti vládnucej komunistickej strane. Nepostavila sa len proti komunistickému, ale aj nacistickému režimu. Milada Horákova bola politička, právnička a bojovníčka za práva žien. Podielala sa taktiež na formulovaní prvého programu odbojových organizácií počas druhej svetovej vojny. Žiaľ, 2. augusta 1940 ju s manželom zatklo gestapo. Bola vystavená tvrdému násilnému výsluchu a vo väzení bola až do roku 1945. BRIGADIR POLISI KAREL SASUIT TUBUN (Anggota Bhayangkara yang gugur melakukan perlawanan tentara penculik para Jenderal) Seorang anggota KORPS BRIMOB POLRI, namanya diabadikan di berbagai kota Indonesia termasuk di kawasan Palmerah, Jakarta Barat. Orang lebih familiar pada nama singkatnya dengan sebutan KS Tubun. Ia adalah Brigadir Polisi Karel Satsuit Tubun salah satu Pahlawan Revolusi. Ia merupakan korban pasukan penculik peristiwa Gerakan 30 September 1965 (G30S) saat sedang mengemban tugas menjadi penjaga kediaman Wakil Perdana Menteri Johannes Leimena, orang yang paling jujur di mata hati Presiden Soekarno, sosok yang juga berasal dari tanah Ambon, Maluku. Waktu pasukan penculik G30S yang hendak menculik Jenderal Abdul Haris Nasution, di Jalan Teuku Umar, sebagian dari pasukan hendak melumpuhkan pengawal yang menjaga rumah Johannes Leimena yang berdekatan dengan rumah Nasution. Saat itu, KS Tubun, dapat giliran tidur dalam pos jaga, kawannya yang lain di lokasi yang berbeda. Dua orang pasukan menghampiri pos dan membangunkan Karel yang sedang tertidur. Senjata Karel masih melekat di tubuhnya. Karel mengira dia sedang diganggu kawan-kawannya. “Karena itu ia tidur terus sambil marah-marah, katanya orang sedang tidur diganggu. Namun si pasukan penculik terus menendang. Karel pun terbangun dan sadar, bukan kawannya yang mengganggu. “Karel melompat yang ada di depannya langsung berkelahi dengan anggota gerombolan Cakrabirawa yang dicap PKI itu. Begitu kisah gugurnya Karel Satsuit Tubun dalam buku biografi Karel Sasuit Tubun (1981) yang disusun Frans Hitipeuw. Berdasarkan kutipan Abdul Haris Nasution di buku Memenuhi Panggilan Tugas: Jilid 6 Masa Kebangkitan Orde Baru (1987) dari buku Dari Hati ke Hati menyebut: “Ada satu orang (penculik) yang terus memasuki kediaman Pak Leimena, terus masuk ke gardu jaga dan merebut senjata Pak Karel yang masih sempat melakukan perlawanan. Tetapi karena satu orang lawan delapan, maka sesudah ditembak tewaslah dia. KAREL SASUIT TUBUN, menyadari bahaya yang sedang terjadi didepannya, anggota polisi tersebut mematikan lampu kemudian diam sesaat mengamati apa yang akan terjadi berikutnya, dia mengambil...
