I was just watching this Ozarks episode of THE FUGITIVE and there’s a little girl who lies about everything and keeps a creepy doll tied to a rope underwater in the pond. Everyday before school she pulls the rope out of the water so she can talk to her sopping wet doll and ask it to do special things for her. Right from the start, my mom is the one who nurtured me, worried about me, guided me, and supported me in every pursuit. My mom has been a nurse for 44 years, and has been a dialysis nurse for 34. I have never met such a compassionate person. She is selfless. She is braver than most. She is stubborn. She never misses a day of work. She has continued to show up six days a week to care for the patients she loves and knows so well. She loves what she does and that makes me admire her even more. • She has tested positive for COVID-19. She is doing OK and is being monitored in the hospital. We truly appreciate everyone who has reached out. We are especially thankful to @charnichols939 for checking on my mom when she had an inkling that something wasn’t right, picking up her medications, calling the ambulance, and driving her to another hospital after the first ER wrongly discharged her. For #HispanicHeritageMonth, were exploring the history of @sociosensalud, as Partners In Health is known in Peru.⠀ ⠀ 1️⃣ Father Jack Roussin, Dr. Jaime Bayona, Dr. Paul Farmer, Dr. Jim Kim, and Ophelia Dahl founded Socios En Salud in September of 1994.⠀ 2️⃣ In 1994, Father Jack brought together 12 people in Carabayllo, one of Lima’s poorest districts, to find the primary problems affecting their community.⠀ 3️⃣ On July 8th, 1996, Socios En Salud became official when a few doctors, medical students, nurses and a secretary joined the cause. ⠀ 4️⃣ Clinical support isn’t the only thing SES workers do, they make frequent house visits to provide support in any way possible. ⠀ 5️⃣ SES workers worked to address basic social determinants of health by providing support in nutrition, housing, transportation, clinical cost, education and employment. ⠀ 6️⃣ In 1999, the first group of 75 Multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB patients finished treatment with a high cure rate of 83% (the highest in the world at the time).⠀ 7️⃣ MDR-TB—previously a death sentence—was shown to the world to be treatable in a resource-poor setting. It was a powerful message that even in its deadliest form, we can cure this disease.⠀ 8️⃣ 24 years after SES was founded, it has grown to nearly 500 employees and reached thousands of beneficiaries in Peru. My grandparents came to the UK in the 70s, and worked for the NHS until their retirement. Being Indian, but born in Britain, sometimes I feel like I’m straddling two complex and intangible identities, especially when I’m confronted with questions like ’Where are you REALLY from?’ or asked why I’m brown, but have a ‘white’ surname. Like so many, the British empire and its lasting effects in India is entangled in my identity. But there is still a sense of national amnesia when it comes to Britain’s imperial past, an unwillingness to acknowledge what colonialism did and how its legacy lives on today. A false and romanticised version of events is still ingrained in our national story and rooted in our culture. This was clear just yesterday when our PM Boris Johnson proclaimed that we should end our ‘cringing national embarrassment about our history’, encouraging patriotic pride in Britain’s involvement in slavery and colonialism. I *wish* his opinion was uncommon, but a survey found that 59% of the British population think that the atrocities of empire were “something to be proud of”. (YouGov, 2014) It’s kind of unsurprising when you think about how much of our colonial history has been filtered or consciously covered up (google Operation Legacy). Our school curriculum excludes the ‘ugly’ bits of our national past, and this erasure perpetuates white supremacy in our education system and minimises past injustice and racism - further marginalising those whose ancestors have suffered because of it. This year research found that only 9% of GCSE students have studied modules that reference the British empire, and only 11% study modules that acknowledge Black people’s contribution to Britain. It was only when I started studying history at university that I really began to learn the full extent of British imperialism and its ongoing legacy - and there’s still SO much I don’t know. This chubby faced little girl who had the most swag at 3yrs old is designing a sustainable Fall capsule collection with @publichabit! A little well known fact about me: I studied fashion and media studies in school. When younger, I originally wanted to be a fashion designer as I would sew and create all original outfits for my barbies (my parents mistook this for me wanting to be a surgeon as had a steady sewing hand lol). While working in retail for six years in high school into college is when I realized I was too impatient to design collection after collection— so I pursued the business and editorial side of fashion before moving into multi-media journalism. Thrilled to say this childhood dream of designing is coming into fruition in another path: this Fall, I’m launching a limited capsule collection in collaboration with the sustainable brand @publichabit. Public Habit produces everything made to order (aka making only what they sell) to most effectively use materials and energy— every item is made from excess or unused wool or cashmere ethically sourced from factories and suppliers that would have otherwise gone to waste. They also don’t sell in ‘seasons’ rather are evergreen and staple pieces to ensure each item has the longest life cycle available. Because of this model: making only what they sell, the timeline of the production is also more efficient instead of guessing what customers want 12-18months ahead. For the next few months, join me as I share my experience with this design process from ideation to creation to digital sample fitting and reframing the ‘Made in China’ narrative (confirmed w/ @publichabit that NONE of the materials used are sourced from the Uyghur region or communities). Her earliest memories of her Abba was him sitting on a writing table in his white kurta-pyjama smoking incessantly and writing in the wee hours of the morning. As a child, she was convinced poet was a euphemism for people who dont work! Living in Red Flag Hall, a commune like flat of the Communist Party of India meant the family lived frugally. Her mother Shaukat Azmi worked in Prithvi Thearte and in her absence her Abba fed, bathed and looked after the children. Her mother often rehearsed her lines spontaneously in front of dhobi, cook etc. Shabana got petrified and assumed her mother is turning insane. Her father dropped his work and took her for long walk on beach, he explained to her, her mother has not enough time to rehearse and as a family it is their duty to support her. Shabana was embarrassed about her father while growing up since Kaifi never wore in western clothes or could speak English. It was years later, Shabana finally realised the grandeur of her father. When she finally confided in her father she wants to act, he said I will support you in whatever you choose to do. If you want to become a shoemaker (moochi) I will support you provided you tell yourself that you will try to become the best moochi in the business. One of the heart warming incidence between father and daughter is related to mangoes. When Shabana was young she brought a bag full of mangoes from her friend. Kaifi noticed this but did not say a word. It was 1950s and the family was living frugally. I loved her so much, but she was wrong about this! 30 years later and I can’t cook to save either our lives, but my husband sure can!
