Mike was wounded while serving in combat, and was awarded the Purple Heart & Bronze Star Medal w/ Valor before retiring as an 18Z. A 3,000 year old Egyptian mummy foot with a prosthetic big toe. Made from wood and leather, it is one of the oldest prosthesis to ever be discovered. The foot with the amputated toe belonged to a woman who was approximately 50 to 60 years of age when she died. The prosthetic toe was designed with a nail divot, which likely signifies that aesthetic was an important factor in wearing it, especially since Ancient Egyptians often wore sandals. The prosthetic also helped the woman with her balance when she walked. According to Andrea Loprieno-Gnirs of the University of Basel: “By using a sophisticated way of fixing the individual parts of the prosthesis to each other, the artificial limb had a balancing effect and gave, to some extent, a freedom of movement. “Based on our scientific examinations, our team was able to verify at least four materials used for manufacturing the prosthetic device. O Forte de São Mateus atrai atenção pelo seu formato de polígono quadrangular irregular, com duas baterias, sendo uma guarita no vértice pelo lado do mar e a edificação do Quartel e Depósito no terrapleno pelo lado de terra. No século XX, sem manutenção, o Forte de São Mateus, abandonado, encontrava-se em ruínas ao final da década de 1930. A estrutura abrigou nesse período um farol, demolido em meados do século pelo risco de desabamento que apresentava. Com o aumento do turismo na região a partir da década de 1970, a Companhia de Turismo do Estado do Rio de Janeiro promoveu nova intervenção de restauro, visando a instalação projetada de um museu. Today, Israelis and jews all around the world observe Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. IDF soldiers and operators will be observing this holiest of days today, as we do each and every year, while keeping one eye open to defend the homeland and keep the nation of Israel safe. In 1973, exactly 47 years ago on this day, an Arab coalition of 9 nations led by Egypt and Syria launched a joint surprise attack on Israel. On a day where most men observed the holiday in the temple, fasting and praying, cut off any means of communication or electricity which impeded the Israeli defense forces from mustering its reserve forces on time to block this massive attack on Israeli land. The Arab coalition consisted of troops and expeditionary forces also from Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and even Cuba The Syrians coordinated their attack on the north to coincide with the Egyptian offensive on the south and initially made threatening gains into Israeli-held territory. Within three days, however, Israeli forces had pushed the Syrians back to the pre-war ceasefire lines. The IDF then launched a four-day counter-offensive deep into Syria. On the Egyptian front - Israel counter-attacked at the seam between the two Egyptian armies, crossed the Canal into Egypt, and began slowly advancing in land in over a week of heavy fighting that resulted in heavy casualties on both sides. On Oct.25th, after Israel pushed back the enemy forces to successfully create a safe zone between the homeland and its attacking neighbors - the UN brokered ceasefire that ended this bloodiest of wars.
