Not all members of the genus assemble large aboveground nests, but those that do are fantastic builders. A colony of these tiny invertebrates can produce a dome-shaped nest that can reach nearly 10 feet in diameter and 4.5 feet in height. Nests are thatched with twigs, stems, grass blades, and conifer needles. The resulting formations soak up sunlight and keep the ants warm. We only wear pink on wednesday Chitons are marine molluscs that is enclosed by an eight plated suit of armour, coming in a range of colours including this very pink speciman. These molluscs remind me of a sort of fantasy dragon armour. Protecting the animal inside these rigid but flexible plates can shift over each other allowing to shift and slide over uneven rocks. These animals, like their limpet cousins, can home into a particular spots on a rock and hold tight when the tide retreats to keep their gills moist. SPRING ONIONS For the busy city dwellers out there, this is the plant for you! Requires little attention, doesn’t need much space, all parts of the plant (except the roots) are edible, what more can you wish from a plant! We plant these in cycles, it’s a good way to ensure a steady flow! It takes about a week to 10 days from the first green shoots start to show after you stick an onion halfway down in the soil. From then on, you should be able to harvest some fresh sprigs of greens in 2 weeks! Do try to cut from the bottom when harvesting (ie harvest the entire sprig) instead of just cutting off half or the top as this will bruise the green stalks and they’ll wilt anyway. Did you guess correctly? #plantriddle With hooded spathe and winter bloom In icy swamps I spread perfume My scent’s been likened to a skunk But unflattering opinions I debunk Answer: Skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus), arum or aroid family (Araceae). If you poke about along streams and in seepage swamps in our area in January, February and March, you may come across the curious and well-camouflaged bloom of skunk cabbage. Look for a fleshy maroon and yellow hood-like spathe hiding a knobby round spadix bearing tiny flowers. These blooms generate their own heat and can melt through ice and snow! The plant’s bright green leaves emerge later in the spring. You may already be familiar with the jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum), another native aroid, but did you know that skunk cabbages share a remarkable trait with the enormous and exotic corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum)? The blooms of both species look and smell like rotting meat, which tricks insects ordinarily attracted to carrion into becoming the plants pollinators. Along with the famously dramatic corpse flower, the skunk cabbage is a true wonder of the plant world! - @usbotanicgarden on Instagram

Published today, introducing Corybas circinatus, a new species of helmet orchid from Palawan, the Philippines. The paper can be viewed online here:⁠ .⁠ https://www.mapress.com/j/pt/article/view/phytotaxa.446.2.7⁠ .⁠ This species was first documented back in 2007, found adjacent to my hammock during a climb of an ultramafic peak that had, at that time, never been summited before. I was, as is often the case, going to the bathroom at the time, having diligently rehydrated post-hike. This is a regular occurrence among novel discoveries of miniature species in botany, by the way. Corybas—helmet orchids—are relatively small and easily overlooked except by those who love them... it is one of my favourite genera, so it was certainly a lucky ...break! These plants have their centre of diversity in the Malay Archipelago and New Guinea, although a good handful of species are also found in perhumid parts of Australia, and in New Zealand and their Southern Ocean territories.⠀⠀⁠ .⠀⠀⁠ As for the genus name Corybas, it is derived from the Greek κορύβαντος (korybantos), the name Corybas alluding to the Korybantes, Phrygian priests who worshipped the goddess Cybele through frenzied dance, and who are often shown in illustrations wearing ornate, crested helmets.
