Yesterday would have been my dad’s 74th birthday. As I age, his face keeps sneaking up in mine. I’m not complaining. The man died with a full head of hair and a pretty decent jaw line. My daughter and me. July 2017 That day, just before this picture was taken and three weeks after the tumor was discovered, I received the crucial call with the final diagnosis. Primarily mediastinal B-cell lymphoma. Before it was only clear that I had cancer, but there were at least three different types that the doctors thought possible. Up to this point, the doctors were most likely to assume thymoma or thymic carcinoma, both of which would have meant that my chances of survival would have been rather low. My daughter was 1.5 years old at the time and I was actually still trying to find my role as a father. The fear of maybe not being able to be there for her was hard to deal with, but that day I knew we had a good chance. And even though she was too young to understand what was going on, Im sure she felt it too. Juli 2017 An diesem Tag, kurz bevor dieses Bild aufgenommen wurde und drei Wochen nachdem der Tumor entdeckt wurde, erhielt ich den entscheidenden Anruf mit der finalen Diagnose. Primär mediastinales B-Zell-Lymphom. Vorher war nur klar, dass ich Krebs hatte, doch gab es mindestens drei verschiedene Arten welche die Ärzte für möglich hielten. Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt gingen die Ärzte am ehesten von einem Thymom oder Thymuskarzinom aus, beides hätte bedeutet dass meine Überlebenschancen eher gering ausgefallen wären. Meine Tochter war damals 1,5 Jahre alt und ich war eigentlich noch damit beschäftigt überhaupt meine Rolle als Vater zu finden. Die Angst vielleicht nicht für sie da sein zu können war schwer zu bewältigen, aber an diesem Tag wusste ich, dass wir eine gute Chance hatten. Und obwohl sie zu jung war um zu verstehen was los war bin ich mir sicher dass sie das auch fühlte.
