Cute little prop-make in which I worked closely with graphic designer @ariefadiwijaya for the new @montanasharp clip, directed by @gabriellemajella. We needed to make a coin machine with a functional coin slot and needed to light up once the coin is put in. We took inspiration from French paper marionette theatres and the band organs that usually accompany an 1800s carousel. The puppet itself is modelled on Montana in the outfit she wore for the clip. Its mostly made out of recycled foamcore and cardboard with a coin slot I took from an old gumball machine and some fairy lights from bunnings punched through the ceiling. Temperatures across the Western world plunged between the 17th and early 19th centuries. It became known as the Little Ice Age. During the coldest winters the river Thames froze over and on several occasions between 1608 and 1814 London witnessed a series of historic spectacles - The Frost Fairs. All London flowed out onto the unflowing river in 1814. Tents were erected and makeshift markets quickly emerged as innkeepers and tradespeople eagerly made the most of this temporary frozen wonder. Thousands ventured onto the ice to witness and enjoy this impromptu mix of festival, circus, and street show -------- We hired a huge car studio in central London and created stills and a short film. For months I have had to hold the film back whilst entering the short film festivals… it has won many awards and can now finally be viewed on my website. So we’re starting something new over here. We’re going to be doing a weekly series called Film Nerd Fridays, in which we highlight a particular film, and share details on its production, impact, and trivia. . Our first pick comes courtesy of DP @samwootton, who has selected Wong Kar Wai’s Hong Kong fever dream, Chungking Express. He had this to say: “Chungking Express may feel like a small movie, but it is so full of life. The inventive cinematography explores fantastic Hong Kong locations in a way that feels like a reinvention of French new-wave…it’s a great example of how the style supports substance: it brings you closer to the characters’ perspectives and grounds the movie in their world.” . The film was made in 1994, with the looming hand off of Hong Kong to China only three years away. Comic anxiety about sex and romance is a front for the deeper fear that political freedom—an entire way of life — has an expiration date in the near future. Though there’s minimal plot, and an apolitical air to the film, it deals with this thematically through its characters. Cop No. 223, has given his (potentially ex) girlfriend May, until May 1st, to come back to him. He marks the days of this countdown by buying cans of pineapple (“May loves pineapple,” he tells us in voice-over), each dated to expire on May 1. If she doesn’t call him on his birthday, the relationship will expire as well. Stylistically, the film deals with time in many ways. Both in its mixed use of frame rates, and in the shifting perspective of its protagonists. The film starts off as if its a Hong Kong gangster film, and then halfway through, shifts entirely to become a more loose study of obsessive love in the current youth culture. This ended up mirroring Wong’s career, as post Chungking, he would leave genre behind and go on to make his masterpieces - In the Mood for Love, 2046. . FUN FACTS: Since Chungking Express was filmed in sequence or like a road movie as Wong Kar-Wai has said, Wong wrote each scene either the night before or in the morning of the day of filming. Quentin Tarantino signed a deal with Miramax specifically so that he could get Chungking out to a wider audience. - @minimal.productions on Instagram

The bus... was our main location on this TV show. We spent 19 days shooting inside it. In summer heat, without air-conditioner. Sometimes driving, sometimes stationary. The bus overheated and broke down on us several times, but we had to keep shooting, getting at least 10 minutes of screen time everyday. . We had to get creative to shoot with two cameras in such a tight space, often sitting on top of each other, between bus seats, or shooting through mirrors. . . This was a truly demanding shoot. My recent post on working at Dunsany Castle reminded me of some of the other sets we created there for #vitaandvirginia - this set is Lady Sackville West’s drawing room. (catherine.derry.dop) I shot independent feature ‘Zebra Girl’ with talented dir. @stephzari + actors, @jadeanouka @sarahlroy @tom_cullen in the Scottish Borders last year. I have have very few stills but it’s a psychological thriller with a bold streak of pitch black humour. Working on a Independent feature film has its pros and cons; we had a lot of creative control which is often not the case on many jobs but were limited by location, budget, minimal crew and time! Dir Steph Zari and I had so much fun experimenting with shots and colour palette. The main character’s favourite colour was pink so we decided to colour some of the location’s grand window’s with gels as we weren’t able to paint the white and beige walls - of which there were many! We went moody in many scenes along w our main character’s mental health and I underexposed a lot of the scenes which was quite nerve wracking but Yves Bélanger’s underexposure on‘Sharp Objects’ was an inspiration. For interiors we also relied heavily on practicals and Alladin light panels. Sometimes being limited forces you to be innovative with your shots. We used K35 lenses A lot of the crew were stepping up a grade in their department and it was great to see them do so well.I look forward to this film coming out very soon!
