Smart, creative women were central to the start of Haystack. Local artists Elizabeth Crawford, Stell Shevis, and Marjorie Sewell were among the small founding group that also included spouses William Shevis and Edgar Sewell. Crawford and Stell Shevis were also the school’s first instructors in pottery and printmaking. Patron Mary Beasom Bishop provided the essential funding to start the school, and her sister Margaret Swart served on Haystack’s first board. Priscilla Merritt was hired as co-director during Haystack’s first summer in 1951. Although her husband Fran Merritt would become known as the school’s legendary first director, Priscilla had an important and lasting impact on Haystack’s development during the three decades they were both part of the school. During Haystack’s first decade, over a third of the school’s instructors were women, including Karen Karnes, Anni Albers, Trude Guermonprez, Toshiko Takaezu, Lili Blumenau, and Mariska Karasz. Brilliant women teaching in the school’s studios in the 1960s included Arlene Fisch, M. C.
