Vulnerability is the birth place of courage. -Brené Brown What is vulnerability? Its the emotion we experience in times of uncertainly, risk, and emotional exposure. Vulnerability is the courage to show up when you cant control the outcome or what the other person thinks. Its raw and scary. Its also liberating. Examine who youre sharing these parts of yourself with and why, without looking for a response. Healing is from sharing with vulnerability, not the reply. Students often share with me how emotionally tender they feel in backends. Is it normal to cry or feel emotional from that yoga pose? Yes. 💗 Backends are vulnerable, because they peel back the armor around the heart space. The armor may look like shame, guilt, and trauma. Backbends also foster love and courage. They are medicinal. Advice: Feel it to heal it. Choose yourself, and recognize it. Build self trust. Press into your purpose. Stop people pleasing. Questions for You: Can you ask for help, and ask for what you need? Why or why not? Do you allow yourself to receive? How can you make yourself whole? Answer here or in your private journal. Much love. Uttanasana , standing forward fold, is under-rated. It is fantastic if practiced regularly, and held for a few breaths to allow the hamstrings to release. . . It is an intense stretch so the first one should have a bend in the knee and then go from there. . . Uttanasana helps open hips, lengthen hamstrings and calves, and helps keep spine strong and flexible. . . Uttanasana also eases anxiety, tension stress and fatigue. #30daysofdance2020 Day 25 Challenge: Flow Today I share with you another type of conversation I can have during my practice. U have seen me love, u have seen my express my pain, my joy and my spirit. Today was yet another difficult day and I got over it so decided to confront my demons. So today I fought. Now about the topic at hand. Flow has many definitions in our scene, fluid movement, style, riding the music and transitioning to name a few. There is not a single skill or technique that covers the whole spectrum of flow, just like with groove it has many forms, shapes and elements. Feeling lifted! Feeling aligned! Feeling powerful! My foundation is a practice in trust. My platform is a practice in love. My support is a practice in gratitude. I did not get up here by myself. So many have helped me learn, test tools and tune my channel from low to high vibration in a compassionate way. Some have jumped into the deep and dark waters with me, giving a life raft when I need to wade or an anchor when I need to stay, and knowing when to take it away when I need to submerge with my own fears. Some have soared in the vast sky with me, circling above when I descend to catch what my own eye finds and billowing breath across land to help me rise back up when my wings are tired. Some got their hands really dirty unearthing me up from my caves and other times handed me the vine when it was time to pull myself up and out. I never wanted anyone to know how low I could go, but if I want you to see how high I can rise you have to know what plane I have come from. I wanted to hide in my most powerless moments, days and weeks, but you will not know how powerful I am unless you know how defeated I felt. It is so uncomfortable to let you know how twisted my body was and how unconscious my mind was but you will not see how aligned I am becoming without knowing how resistant I was to connecting with source, spirit, ancestors, myself. Hanging is on my list of daily must do’s the last few months. It’s here to stay. Twice a day if possible. When I first started, my grip strength was much worse. I’m up to about a minute most days. The movement and space I get in my spine and ribs is phenomenal! It took a couple months for my spine to move at all as I slowly decompressed. I have an inversion table but feel much more benefit from hanging from my hands. Adding deep breaths really expand the core canister and stretch the rib cage and diaphragm. By its nature, circus cannot be static; and yet in New York City, we have been blessed with a decade-long matinee under the cinderblock tent of @circuswarehouse . A bastion of humanity, it’s showcased the best of us. It’s lifted up the beginner, amateur, and professional alike regardless of creed, ability, experience, or age. It’s made an unbreakable community. And though it’s stood solid as a rock and felt like an endless dynasty, it too must move, as circus is wont to do. Random shots from this past week’s practice with Dharma. I missed a few days, but am happy to practice recap Maha Shakti on replay today 8am central 9 am ET & Satsang tonight 6 central, 7 ET @dharmayoganyc 🙏🏼❤️ A few unlocks have happened. For the first time felt deeper in stork by grabbing base of skull past my ears. Also, I was able to grab both feet for the first time in full dhanurasana without using a strap and hold it for the duration Sri Dharma had us in the pose. Yes, it felt incredible and was definitely a moment of bliss. Dharma has also had us practicing in the Lord’s hand and continues to take us there while in the poses. He will say something like “your head is towards the Lord’s hand” in Kurmasana or “you are pressing your hands against the Lord’s palm” in cobra pose. It is precious and I am sure most of us are grinning ear to ear and heart to heart. Grateful to be taken to this front row seat. The senses only allow you to stay a few moments, but we must know we are always there with him and he is with us. Grateful to be where I am this life in this moment. The year 2020 has definitely been interesting for us all. I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for this practice and the teachings from this lineage. I used to plan trips and count down days to be in person with Dharma again and now get to be with him 5 days a week live and always in the collective we all exist in. Deep healing of cells and downloads continue on. The postures are just gymnastics if the mind is not fixed on the creator or done for an offering in selfless service. Did you know our aerial fabric is machine washable? Once you have exhausted the ‘Febreze option’ you can wash them (one at a time) on the most delicate speed your machine has. Make sure you set the water temperature to cold and use the mildest detergent you can. * While you have your silks/hammocks down to wash it’s a great opportunity to give them a thorough check over! * Never dry your fabric in a drier (even on the lowest heat setting). The best way to dry them is to hang them inside away from direct UV light. We suggest using a fan to help speed up the process. Life has been crazy lately. There are so many really big things coming up, all of them really exciting (I’ll share them all in time)! Even when things are exciting, they can feel quite overwhelming. I think it’s natural in overwhelming stages of life for people to narrow their focus in on the details. This can actually prove beneficial, because sometimes you have to focus on specific items to get things done. Having said that, it’s REALLY important (in my experience) to consistently take mental steps back in perspective... to remember there is always a bigger picture. When you feel the world, your finances, your job, etc closing in on you, take moments to focus on the long term, the perspective that’s outside your current situation. Find your support system, remember you’re not the center of the universe, breathe, you’re still alive. Make sure before and during lowering down you: - Activate the core - Push the shoulders towards the ceiling so you’re not sinking down into them - Tilt the pelvis posteriorly - Squeeze the glutes . 1st video shows level 1 - (half plank to spinx) 2nd video shows level 2 - (half plank to cobra) 3rd video shows level 3 - (full plank to upward facing dog) . 4th video shows a combination of these - We can also mix and match some of these techniques to suit ourselves... . I don’t quite know how I became a yoga teacher. Truly, I don’t ever remember making a conscious decision. In many ways I feel the path chose me. I began practicing yoga at age 17, encouraged by my inspiring mother, who had previously been on a deep and profound spiritual quest of her own survival and soul revival following two cancers and a lifetime of living with complex PTSD. Little did I know at the time, the teachings of yoga, mindfulness and the conscious embodiment community, would become my life support during a very challenging decade in my 20’s navigating my own chronic anxiety and insomnia carried through my lineage. Throughout those many many years (and still ongoing) of self-reflection, healing, creativity and inquiry, I have been brought into daily conversations with my Self via the wisdom of my body. Through many sleepless nights and much somatic ‘struggle’, I have learnt many things … primarily that curiosity and wonderment is actually the purest form of self-love there is, and an opportunity not only to reset into wellbeing, but to get to know ourselves on a deep and true level. For me, this approach is at the heart of teaching yoga and meditation ~ an invitation to befriend ourselves and hold space for our fullness. A willingness to touch the muddy depths and soar to the starry skies of our own embodied soul potential, and to chaperone others along their journey of healing and awakening alongside us. 🙏🏽 This dedication has become my life passion and purpose. Is there such thing as bad movement? Sure. There are definitely things that some individuals shouldn’t do. One of the things I’ve come to appreciate is that there aren’t necessarily any bad movements but the proper preperation that we would need to get to the desired position or exercise. Let’s take setu bandhasana for example, this posture rightfully so comes at the end of primary series in a sequential order where your shoulders, neck and upper back have been strengthened throughout the practice and under the guidance of a (qualified) teacher, will you be taught this be pose. This posture also sets us up for the postures coming in intermediate. Using different modalities such as weight training, Pilates and FRC, the preparation to get into this posture is now part of my movement vocabulary and is accessible for me in my current practice. Air baby pose from 11 years ago. Developing confidence in this position can be quite helpful in learning the one arm handstand. It gives you some of the sensation of the one arm balance, but with a lower center of mass and an extra point of contact for support. I also find that the learning curve for this pose is much quicker than the OAH, as long as you understand how to align the shoulder and knee/elbow connection. You know how we love our pillar work. 😏 A properly functioning pillar (hips, torso, and shoulders) can help spare you from movement inefficiencies that can turn into movement dysfunction, which can increase injury risk. — Try these exercises demonstrated by @coach_jair. They’re simple but effective. As we like to say, simple things done savagely well. — ∙ Dead bug with active hip flexion: Hold each rep for 5 to 20 seconds to develop endurance. Keep hips and ribcage aligned. — ∙ Quadruped opposites: Hold each rep for 5 to 20 seconds. Keep hips and ribcage aligned with a neutral spine. Push into the ground. Think about making your body as long as possible. — ∙ Bear position opposites with 1-inch lift: Lift opposite hand and foot an inch, keeping ribcage and hips aligned with a neutral spine. Imagine there’s a cup of water on your lower back. Don’t spill. — ∙ DNS star pattern: Hold each rep for 5 to 20 seconds. Imagine you’re being pulled up and forward from your belt buckle. Keep hips and ribcage aligned. — ∙ Base position presses: Three-quarters of the way in a squat position (maintaining a neutral spine), press slowly and hold for a few breaths. Restoring Mobility •••••••••••••••••••••••••• While the goal of rehab is to get people to return to “functional” compound patterns, you can’t necessarily focus on ONLY those patterns. While isolated movements may not be “functional” if that “part” does not work then other areas will be compensate. . Case Study: I am 9 weeks post grade 2 adductor longus strain / athletic pugalia (sports hernia). Mechanism of injury: explosive movement while finishing a takedown with the posting leg. I could squat, deadlift, swing, walk : all compound functional movements. The hardest thing with this injury was just lifting my leg while on my back. While not normally a “functional movement” for jiu jitsu that is EXTREMELY important movement. . When I was initially able to return to Jiu jitsu I had to heavily modify due to the inability to play an effective guard (open or closed). . Here I use a Cossack squat and full deep squat as an assessment for my progress. Interventions have been end-range isometrics. Isometric contraction should be safest GREATEST effort. Also referred to as PAILs (progressive angular isometric loading) from a variety of positions that put tension on the adductor longus. Progressed positions: 1️⃣Butterfly 2️⃣Bearsit 3️⃣Straddle These aren’t necessarily “functional positions” but they are effective positions for training the damaged muscle. Note that I am using active inputs to restore hip adductor mobility. Hip adductor flexibility (passive motion) was restored very easily, however the injured area was extremely weak and could not generate sufficient force from lengthened positions. . This is concept is referred to as Mechanotransduction, which is a concept of using appropriate stress (isometrics) to facilitate tissue repair. . Once I was able to generate 70% max volitional contraction with hip adduction I progressed to the next more lengthened position. . It’s now been a year since the last time I told myself that it was going to be a year of hard work and sacrifices, in terms of career, training performance and self development. It’s been a year that I don’t take a single day off from work and training, no matter I was sick, what the news said or how bad the weather was. It’s been almost a year since I started to work with people and clients in particular that really fell in love with what I do and what I can share with them. They truly believed in me and what I am capable of, putting their trust on me. A year since I have taken the risk and decided of moving on, no matter how things would go. The risk of putting myself to a place where nobody could reassure me about how bad or good things would’ve gone. But I did it. I went on my own, into the unknown. A year since I started to read self-development books, because i like the fact that despite sometimes we lack in knowledge, we can build that up ourselves looking for the truth, looking for the light, being curious. A year of staying away from distractions and fully focus on what I really want, focusing on what I do and take care of my plans, waking up and taking them to sleep with me. A year full of ideas which have been accomplished. Ideas that have turned into desires, desires that have been transmuted into reality. A year of daily meditation and self-discipline practises, which made me the person I am, today. A year of connecting with likeminded people and recognising good opportunities. Opportunity of learning from the bests and take my knowledge to the next level. Dreams that have now turned into reality. From working as an employee in a gym to be able to be an head coach and train coaches, thanks to those who have believed in me and helped me growing. A year of injuries which have helped in knowing myself more. A year worth of sacrifices. No matter what it is that you want to achieve in life, always believe in yourself and never give up your dreams. With consistency, perseverance and hard work they’ll happen. Growing, listening, learning. And struggling every day with finding a balance between practicing what I preach, and recognizing the very real fact that Instagram is a world that I cannot avoid as a business owner. How to capture attention but also set aside my ego? How to promote the ideals of yoga (everyone can do yoga, yoga is about how you feel & not how you look, etc) with an image that only shows the result and not the process? . Last week I met with a photographer who is supposed to help me with my social media and advertising. My ground rules: no ‘sensual’ yoga poses, fully clothed, share knowledge not just aesthetically pleasing images, and none of my pictures should make people feel like yoga is inaccesible to them. He understood what I meant, but also reminded me that wearing my most unflattering clothes and sharing only accessible postures isn’t going to be the most efficient route to capture the attention of potential customers. . Yoga does not have to be done on your head or with your limbs twisted into a pretzel. Yoga does not have to be done in a thong and sexy sports bra. But if that’s your thing, then that’s cool too. You do not have to be flexible to do yoga. Yoga is not a competition. It’s not a solution to be grasped at, and it’s not an end goal. . Yoga is a deep breath that fills your lungs and leaves you feeling calm. Yoga is a daily routine that allows you to see growth and change. It’s creating a deeper understanding of your body and self. It’s a moment for you. It’s a lifestyle. . I’m still working on finding a balance that I feel proud of. This is an odd time for celebration. I turned 32 yesterday and received an absolute outpouring of love via calls, messages, zooms, photos, videos, flowers, songs, gifts and the best gluten free treats from my family and friends. I found that even amidst all of the joy and love, I still felt a deep heaviness inside. The collective anxiety & fear of the world, and the city of New York in particular, is weighing on me. I recently learned a practice from my cool friend @itsjackiecantwell that whenever I feel anxious or sad and negative thoughts begin to spiral, I can lay a hand over my heart and tell myself one thing I love about myself and one thing I’m grateful for. This simple practice of going inwards, even if just for a moment, has helped. My wish this year is that we are all able to get through this strange & confusing time, with self awareness, generosity of spirit, and practices of love. The past month and a half I have had the privilege of doing virtual lessons with athletes from all over the country. Becuase I have been doing so many virtual lessons during quarantine, I find myself doing all of the stretches, drills, and workouts with my kids. I can feel my body getting more flexible and stronger. Almost to where it was when I was on Wildcats. Last night at 11 PM Texas time, I hosted a “Jumps with John” with over 90 atheltes from New Zealand! My first virtual class with another country and it was such a fun experience! At midnight when the class was over, I had a rush to JUMP! I videoed myslef in our living room jumping and I am shocked I am still able to do this. I am so bleseed to have a passion for flexibility and jumps. Hiii😆🤙🏽 Its been 6months!! I miss you! The last 6 months have been pretty transformative for me, I have been focusing on prioritising my own self care and the practices that keep me happy, healthy and in a state of optimal wellbeing. I have noticed that limiting my consumption or consciously reducing, EVEN the things that serve me, can bring a true sense of value, equanimity and gratitude to my everyday. This also helps prevent these amazing things from being taken for granted or overused.👌🏽 Instagram is definitely one of those things for me: it has been an amazing tool to share my voice, mindset and positive outlook and also helped me connect to awesome people around the world. However it can SUCK me in! I often get stuck scrolling and mindlessly consuming information that leaves me feeling unsettled and in lack. Lately I have really been trying my best to be aware of what makes me thrive and what lowers my vibration. To be more conscious of what I’m consuming AND what I am putting out into the world.
