To our friends in the San Diego Distinguished Gentlemans Ride community! We will continue the tradition of awarding the Most Dapper rider in San Diego with the annual Lon Ficke award. Lon was one of our most Distinguished riders and was presented with a very special trophy for the Best Dressed Gentleman in 2015. Tragically, Lon lost his life only a few weeks after the ride in 2018. In memory of this very special man and with the permission of Lons family, we have renamed the trophy the Lon Ficke Award for San Diegos Finest Rider. Lon passed along this coveted moniker to Mario Alberto at our 2018 gathering, in turn, Mario chose Stefania Dangerous Marzano at the 2019 event. This year could be your chance to be chosen as the Most Distinguished, Dapper, Finest Dressed rider to grace the San Diego streets. Qualifications for the award are fairly simple and subjective: Simply post a photo of yourself and your bike and the hashtags #lonficke and #dgrsandiego2020 so that we may be able to find a worthy recipient. Heads up! Hat(s) Number 13. I wasn’t sure about including either of these hats. One, the pith helmet, part of the uniform of colonial power and political reach. It had some practical advantages in hot and damp climates, we are told. But its real purpose was to identify ourselves as the cartographer and adjudicator of someone else’s world. The other, the keffiyeh, does not have military origins. It is widely worn as a practical and versatile garment. At the same time it has become a symbol of revolutionary struggle for many living in the postcolonial world. And for that, it has a history of appropriation by outsiders. But I took this photo and posted it because the events of the past week have made me think. I’ve lived in the US and the UK and they are quite different places, with different dynamics. A lot of people in the UK might say we don’t have the racism of the US. I’m not sure that’s true. Because racism is a process, a transaction, which manifests itself in different ways, everywhere. But what to do? It’s easy to post a black square, or to “amplify” another’s cry for justice, or to say you’re listening. Ultimately, it’s easy to put an aggressor in jail (especially for something they clearly did). And we should do those things. But at the same time we need to think about who “we” is, and who gave us the power to be the decider. We need to recognise that the pith helmet was not merely a functional, rational invention to protect white bodies from the sun. It was a hat we put on ourselves to perform the role of master over others’. To be referred to as who I truly am. On this day 7 years ago, I initiated that process. ⠀ To me, it was support or none, friends or none, family or none. Of course I worried I would lose everyone. But What I had found...became more important because, not everyone is always going to be there... but, we are always stuck with ourselves. I’m always going to be there for myself, hence why this transition mattered immensely to my quality of life and my mental health. “Her” es una de mis películas favoritas. Habla de muchas cosas pero sobre todo de tres importantes:soledad, imaginación y amor. Si Joaquin Phoenix lo borda creo que Scarlett merecía un oscar, porque una voz también interpreta . Si la habéis visto no puedo decir nada más que cosas buenas del vestuario. Ese retrofuturismo sin pasarse y esa paleta de color me hacen parar cada rato la película, dejarla en pausa y decir “joder que bien!” Así da gusto. Hacía como 9 años que no dibujaba, lo había dejado completamente apartado. No dibujo bien, no encuentro las proporciones del todo, pero me relaja y me siento bien al ver que no lo he perdido del todo. ¿¿Cuándo deja de ser importante el dibujo?? He calculado que sobre los 8-10 años empiezan a tomar mucha más presencia y peso esas asignaturas que nos harán personas de bien, productivas, y progresar en la vida. Matemáticas, lengua, sociales... se deja de lado lo artístico porque parece que eso no te garantizará un futuro, como si lo otro sí. Como si ya no mereciese la pena seguir dibujando, y hubiese una fecha de caducidad. Parece que es infantil hacerlo y se empieza a perder, como si una voz interior dijese “va ya se acabó el juego, ahora cosas serias” Las malditas fechas de caducidad. Y las cuentas que hay que rendir con la sociedad: entras en una edad más adulta y ahora hay que ser más operativo y práctico, para mi se tiene una idea de la utilidad retrógrada...y así lo artístico queda fuera. O problema são algumas pessoas que parecem achar que sou apenas esse lado para cima. Por que o palhaço tem de ser obrigado a fazer rir? Por que o palhaço não pode ser triste? Afinal, nem todo palhaço é só animação. My favourite part of the job is getting to cover the full range of political debate at Holyrood. The best bit of that is getting to work with an amazing group of people from across the organisation to help make the Parliament a more inclusive and safer place for LGBT+ staff and visitors. We’re a tightly-knit bunch and we’re really good at lifting each other up. ⠀⠀ ✨ How have you and your team adapted to the outbreak? ⠀⠀ The Official Report had to hit the ground running when lockdown began. Almost from day 1, we were dealing with important coronavirus legislation and needed to ensure that people could read what was being discussed. My colleagues and I have missed being in the chamber and the committee rooms – you don’t have quite the same atmosphere in your kitchen! – but, with the help of the Broadcasting team and the clerks, we’ve managed to continue to produce a vital document week in, week out. ⠀⠀ I really miss seeing my colleagues, but we’ve been using Microsoft Teams to stay in touch every day. In order to make up for the lack of our cake table (on which we’d share cakes for birthdays, etc), we’ve started a baking group in Teams. Mycroft, my furry friend, is fantastic but undemanding company.
