Spending the summer running with my little poppet has made me reflect on a few things. It turns out I have a really mean inner voice. When things aren’t going well then I am so hard on myself and yes, I say things that I’d never say to this little bucket of trouble (even when she is being a pain in the butt). So my lesson from all of this? During a media trip organised by Louis Vuitton, I got the chance to visit a magical place in the South of India called Dakshina Chitra Museum @dakshinachitra_heritagemuseum . Located about 25 Km to the south of Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu, DakshinChitra has been developed as a heritage museum. Built on 10 acres, the place has an array of displays and relocated originals of dwellings depicting the life pattern of people in the states of southern India. The exhibits portray the architecture, art, folk performing arts and craft. This is the place where I experienced handloom up close and even tried my hands at weaving. This is where and when I learnt first hand the intricacy of woven fabric, the patience and perseverance required on behalf of the artisans. Posing here with an artisan who weaves day in and day out to bring alive beautiful fabrics and sarees. This was an unforgettable experience... and even more unforgettable is the fact that I lost my favourite pair of Ray Ban sunglasses on this trip.. This is me with my magazine good-looking parents when it was just the three of us. My dad randomly sent this the other day. I don’t think I remember being that young. But I do know that these adult years are flying by. I was reminded of that today so intensely, when the schedule seemed particularly full of my long timers — patients I’ve cared for since they were young, some their first day of life even — now sassy, spunky full of life individuals forging their way in this world. Teary eyed, I felt so proud of them. Some have already had such full journeys in their little lives. Some have surmounted amazing challenges, while some haven’t quite made it over the crest, yet! But they all give me hope and joy and laughs and love. Today is the day I’ve dreaded since I was a little girl. The day I have to say, see you in Heaven, to my best friend. Although it’s been 3 months, it still doesn’t feel real. Grandma was the definition of unconditional love. She loved fearlessly and without hesitation. Grandma showed her love through prayers, hugs and cookies. She was always there to give you a hug, tell you how much you are loved and hand you a warm, chocolate chip cookie. Grandma taught me the power of prayer. When I would come to grandma with a complaint or issue, she would always ask me “Have you prayed about it”. Grandma knew, If you turned to Jesus everything would be okay. She loved Jesus more than anything else. Grandma prayed for everyone(if they knew it or not). Grandma called everyone “Sweetie”. She always said, “If I call everyone sweetie, I don’t have to remember there name.” No matter what, grandma was there for you. She was the most dependable person you’d ever meet. She made it a point to have a special relationship with all of her grandkids and great-grandkids. I am forever grateful for the bond and relationship we had. I will miss our Thursday lunches at Ted’s, playing cards and sleepovers with our Sleepytime tea and Antique Roadshow. She was kind, generous, humble, funny and selfless. Today we have entered a challenge set by @danielle_in_the_kitchen to make a Dutch baby with 25 other people! It’s graduation time...#covidstyle. Did you know that graduation #macarons are a thing? Okay, maybe they aren’t, but they should be. This isn’t how I imagined the last day of school would be for my 2020 Kinder, 2nd and 3rd grade graduates, but we can’t always get what we want. Right? However, here we are, healthy and still sane (kinda). I still cried when they announced my baby Frankie’s award for being a busy 🐝 working hard on all her assignments...even though it was on a screen. I was proud of my 2nd grader for sharing her memories of the year (in Spanish) with her class and decorating and wearing a graduation crown, even though it was only online. I’m proud of my 3rd grader for choosing to participate in a (no touch) photo scavenger hunt at her school as a final celebration...even though she had to wear an uncomfortable mask the whole time and couldn’t hug her buddies. Tomorrow is moving day 🚛📦 Its mixed emotions really... I am feeling pretty sad about moving. We have had some really great experiences in this house and are leaving with some very precious memories... My daughter has celebrated 5 birthdays in this house, Ive hosted one of my best friends baby showers here, weve had several Christmas parties here, my daughter was toilet trained here, I built my business from here, I got to live next door to one of my closest friends for three of our five years here (we even had an interconnecting door), weve had people come to stay, being able to walk to school, walking to our friends from schools houses, the list is endless... I was 32 when we moved in 😱 It feels like a lifetime ago... When I asked my daughter what her favourite memory of our time at this place has been and she said: all the parties weve had here mum. So I guess there is a common theme... we love parties! Ha. No, what it comes down to is the memories we have made with each other and with our loved ones. First Day of School🍎 This was Sadie Sue’s first day of kindergarten. Rick followed us to school that day snapping pictures the entire way. (It was Jake’s first day of sixth grade as well but he was far too cool to hang with us on our walk.) It was also a time in our lives when Rick Long was miserable at work. They were changing things up. He was traveling three and four days a week. He had less control over how his customers were handled. And he hated everything about the place he had loved for twenty years. We talked about it a lot. We prayed about it even more. Then one night he came home so bedraggled and exhausted I looked him straight in the eye and said “I don’t care if we have to sell our house and you have to start cutting grass for a living. You’ve got to quit.” And I meant every word. 💁🏼‍♀️ After we walked back home from dropping off Sadie Sue that day he drove to work, went in, told his boss he wasn’t going to miss watching his children grow up, cleaned out his office and never looked back. No idea where or when the next paycheck would come. No idea what he’d do next. But strong faith in God and a clear idea of what kind of Daddy and husband he was going to be. ❤️ Thankfully, God led him to a wonderful job where he stayed until he retired. He kept this picture on his desk until his last day and now it lives on his bedside table. A few minutes before this photo was taken, I was breastfeeding my daughter (still trying to get the hang of it) while my mom was spoon-feeding me a meal she had lovingly prepared to nourish me back to health postpartum. I found such comfort in having my sweet mom around for the first week after birth - providing love and homemade soup, singing Russian lullabies to help Isabelle fall sleep, helping to guide and nurture me as I took my first steps on this motherhood journey. If you’re following our cancer story, on Valentine’s Day we learned that treatment options are at an end. Our family went from these giant chocolate hearts (72 pieces!) to heavy, sad ones and lots of cries, hugs, and prayers. For almost two years we’ve been battling ocular melanoma that spread to my liver, which originated in my right eye years earlier. It’s a rare cancer with few options, and the survival rate is 1 year once it has metastasized. I’ve been blessed to get so much time with my family and to prepare for this next chapter of our story. In September we exited a clinical trial that wasn’t working anymore. In the fall we made progress with radiation treatment, only to find out in the winter tumors had spread to my abdomen, ribs, spine, and lymph nodes. For the past two months we’ve been working on improving my liver function in order to be able to get into a new trial. But the news on Friday is that my liver isn’t going to improve, making other trials out of reach, and leaving us with no further treatment options. Which means this next chapter is titled “End of Life.” Might be weeks or months. All I know is that I’m definitely experiencing a slow but continuous decline in my stamina, pain, comfort, and digestion. We’ve been so blessed by all of the amazing love, kindness, gifts, and prayers from all of you. Thank you. And I am blessed to be confident about what comes next for me in heaven. So if you can spare a few more prayers for us, please pray for our family. Especially for Cooper, Elsa, and Maisie, and my amazing wife, Amy, who put her dreams on hold for cancer, managed the heck out of the healthcare system, somehow kept the household running, and is in some serious need of her own healing time. I’m twelve days out from surgery, and I’m alive and feeling relatively normal. This week I had my drains removed and I DONT miss them! ⠀ I think all this focus on my positive attitude and strength has given me a tremendous boost going into this life changing diagnosis/surgery/recovery. I’m endlessly grateful for the check-ins, flowers, and food deliveries from friends. How did I get this lucky to know these legendary humans? ⠀ But for those who have been through this yourself, with your family member, or are going through it right now, I just want to be transparent in that it really truly SOOKS in four million different and confusing ways. Despite the fact my pain was significantly less excruciating than I had imagined that first week, waking up with rock hard foreign bumps on your chest that look like two beat up robots is jarring. ⠀ I’ll never have those soft, stretchy, moldable things that remind you of sex, of femininity, of giving life. But I also don’t have to look down and think of the poison that is literally trying to kill me. Stark contrasts that I’m constantly trying to reconcile. ⠀ You won’t be ready for the influx of love and support and then the sharp decline of some loved ones moving on and living their lives - too awkward, or busy, or sad to contact you again - or whatever the reason might be. They still care, they still care ... keep repeating to yourself... you know they still care. ⠀ My upper chest is tender like I was kicked 50 times, my showers are not relaxing but full of careful motions, I have to sleep in one position only, and I have to keep going back to my dr to get my excess fluid drained with a needle and syringe - luckily these gals are completely numb (and hopefully will be until I’m fluid free!). ⠀ But I’ve been here before, in smaller ways, but still here. This is a bump, a boulder, a mountain. People in this world have gone through much bigger, traumatizing or systemically unjust experiences, and lived through them. We are all scarred, some more than others, so as the world implodes... I remind myself of how much we’ve all been through. Throughout my childhood I imagined a myriad of things for my life. A lot of them I’ve achieved, many I’ve not (looking at you well-appointed loft in NYC. You, too, Harvard.) Yet I never imagined I’d be a mom. I guess it was something I figured I’d do someday - that’s what women did, after all; became wives and mothers. Settled down. But it was never something I planned when squinting longingly at the grand expanse of my future. Today, I am a mom, and it’s a title I have been immeasurably changed by. I couldn’t possibly be more thankful for or inspired by my daughters. Two vastly different humans who have taught me more about empathy and compassion and patience and resilience and boundaries and *myself* than anything or anyone else ever could. Loving them is the easiest thing I’ve ever done while being a parent is absolutely the most difficult. I celebrate them - and the life we’ve carved out with one another - daily.
