Swimming in the Rain - 5.4% abv - west coast-inspired pale ale featuring citra, strata, and chinook hops. This beer highlights a complete shift from Eager to Share with a brand new west coast inspired grain bill and water profile with an East coast twist. Soft water yet more structured hop bitterness balanced out with those melon-y citra and strata hops creates a twist on an old favorite of mine. I remember living out in San Diego trying to find a job in the beer industry almost 10 years ago, stumbling upon Alpine Beer Co and being blown away. I recently was reintroduced to west coast hops via a shipment from family and was reminded how refreshing these beers were. Crisp, clean, refreshing, urging another sip. Would like to thank the Bhakta team for giving me the opportunity to review their blend of 8 Armagnac vintages (1868, 1904, 1933, 1947, 1951, 1959, 1964, 1970) barrel 4: Galahad, bottled at 47.7 % abv and finished in Islay Scotch casks, from the private cellar of Raj Peter Bhakta . And yes, you heard me, they really do finish in Islay casks, giving it a uniquely smoky touch. Armagnac is a small-batch brandy, distilled from grapes in the Armagnac region of Gascony, France, and generally produced in small amounts using a different distillation process to Cognac, resulting in a smooth, complex spirit. On the nose you are instantly greeted, by a pleasant smell of butterscotch cookies gently cooking in the oven- just like entering grandma’s house. There are plenty of floral-citrus notes with a touch of vanilla, and a honey sweetness with a little of the smoke from the Islay barrel wafting in towards the end. On the palate there is a distinct oakiness, which is pleasantly interlaced with the floral sweetness and a little spice. This dram had me nosing for longer than normal, as it kept evolving with time. The finish was medium to long, with the notes from the Armagnac playing nicely with the flavors infused from the Islay cask, neither overwhelming the other. Bhakta, in my opinion, are producing some expectational Armagnac’s- a must try for any serious whisky connoisseur. The Islay cask seems to elevate an already wonderful spirit, into a whole new realm. Raj has built yet another wonderful brand, and I can imagine will far surpass any previous endeavors. In our review of the @michterswhiskey 20 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon our reviewer concluded that this is an absolutely fantastic bourbon from start to finish. For me, the key characteristic is a balance of honey, nut, fruit and a perfect sense of oak. There is no over-oaking here, and in fact it is an ideally balanced whiskey, especially for the age! Now we have our raw material and water it’s time for them to meet and get the process of making alcohol underway. . When we take our milled grist (course flour) of malted and unmalted barley and introduce it to hot water we enter the mashing stage. . This porridge like substance is mixed together for hours allowing the starch (from the malted barley) to be converted into sugars ready to be fermented. . When the mash is finished and drained the liquid extract at this point is called wort and is ready for fermentation. . It’s in a large vessel called a wash back that the wort is introduced to yeast which eats the sugars in the liquid to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide. . We take safety seriously at our brewery and taproom. One of our staff members recently tested positive for COVID-19 and we shut down operations. To step into Hampden Estate is to experience a step back in time to an unchanged, 18th century distillery. Since 1753 Hampden Estate has continuously produced some of the most sought after and valuable rum in the world. In the early 1900s the method of producing extremely high ester rum was developed at Hampden and spread to the other distilleries in the area— the parish of Trelawny became the epicenter of Hogo. Trelawny rums were famous for their extremely high esters and Hampden is the region’s last continuously operated distillery, still producing with the same traditional methods. In 2009, the Hussey family bought the distillery and retained all of the traditional practices of Trelawny Rum. In 2010, Rum began aging at the distillery for the first time in history. A world premiere. Hampden 2010 C💎H is an incredibly powerful bottling of Hampden Estate rum exemplifying the single marque showing 1300-1400 grams of esters / hlpa (the second highest marque of the distillery). This expression is completely aged at the distillery in Trelawny, Jamaica. It has never before been bottled on its own in history, a world premiere. Clonakilty Distillery has just announced that it will start manufacturing hand sanitisers. CEO Michael Scully said, “our main priority is public service, and we feel any company in a position to offer a helping hand right now, should do so.” Scully said that “we are adhering to HSE specifications, creating sanitisers with an alcohol content of 63 per cent ABV. Fortunately, we already have suitable 500 ml PET bottles and equipment in place, which means that we are ready to go into production immediately. We expect to have our first batch of 5,000 bottles ready within the next week.” Scully said, “We plan on offering the sanitiser for free to local charities and those most in need.” The company will supply the rest at cost, at first to the local community. As you all know, Springbank distillery was established in 1828 by the Mitchell family. It is the oldest independently owned distillery in Scotland as it remains to be part of the same family today, five generations later. When our current owners great-great grandfather founded the distillery, unlike most others in Scotland he installed not 2 but 3 stills. This has given distillery managers through the ages the opportunity to experiment by introducing different distillation techniques to create a range of varying whisky flavour profiles. This has resulted in the production of 3 distinctive whisky brands all made under the same roof: Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn. Today, we will look at our Hazelburn brand and the variations in the production method to create an entirely unpeated single malt. Firstly, one very important adaptation in the process is very early on during the kilning of the malt. Green malt is transported from the malt barn floor as usual to the kiln via an integrated system of conveyor belts. It eventually makes its way into the kiln where it will be dried. Hazelburn is non-peated, therefore the malt is dried over a 30 hour period using only hot air. The other important variant in the production process is in the distillation. Hazelburn is triple distilled which is something more commonly associated with the Irish Whisky Industry. Only a handful of distilleries in Scotland carry out triple distillations for some whiskies in their range. In short, triple distillation results in a more smooth spirit, and concentrates not only the alcohol but the lighter, fruity flavours. Removing more of the heavy, water-soluble compounds throughout each stage and therefore resulting in a new make with a higher ABV as you can see on our distillation diagram. The Guild was built to legitimize & empower small, local, and independent maltsters throughout North America. The pioneers of our community saw that despite the craft’s successes in relocalizing beer and spirits, the malt supply remained heavily consolidated and commodity-based. Brewers and distillers throughout North America were still buying their malt from all of the same sources, and it was exceedingly difficult to connect with local farmers.
