Happy 5th birthday to our favorite space loving middle child! If you know Ollie he is super shy and almost never asks for anything so I was super surprised when he asked for “A space party with all my frewends who jump out and yell SURPRISE when I come down the stairs!” Well thanks to covid that won’t be happening but we are in Montana and will have most of his cousins here to celebrate with him so hopefully he will still have a great birthday! Colour by number - space theme! I love making my own colour by numbers for the boys - they are simple and easy for me to prep of an evening and is a little structured activity we can do together when they feel like it. For A’s I used numbers for him to follow and decided to try and help little C with his by just popping the colour as an outline to see if he could recognise them! • Well. He wasn’t into it. Whilst his older brother sat happily colouring and chatting away about ‘astronauts’ and the ‘moon’ (getting my moon phase puzzle out again was a win!) he scribbled some green, tried to wrangle the pencil holder, stole the ‘full moon’ and ran away 🤣🤣. So I let A colour until he was too distracted by his little brother and we moved on to some playdough! A then revisited his colouring whilst C napped. • If I’m honest I was batting WAY too high for the little guys ability level - he loves mark making and we will stick with that for awhile. But sometimes it pays to see what they will do right? 🤣 Our new pencil holder from @rabbit.and.rose was sooo perfect for this. My Sophomore students just completed their second project, which looks at communicating the concepts of anger/playfulness/elegance in 3D forms using only white paper. These forms also have to hold or display an object: a rubber band/a ping pong ball/a poker chip. It allows us to talk about how our work may be interpreted and how our lived experience impacts the way we view form language. We’re online this semester, which gives them the opportunity to communicate their 3D work through videos and photographs. Very excited for what else this crew has in store. Comme des Garçons - Spring 1997 Rei Kawakubo (b. 1942, Tokyo) began designing as Comme des Garçons in 1969, choosing the name from a French song for the sound of the phrase, apart from its meaning. She seeks to create what has not been seen before. Her clothes are bound to ideas, rather than to wearability, and challenge our assumptions. Spring 1997 – Dress Meets Body, Body Meets Dress – featured dresses with down padding that redesigned the body via “lumps and bumps.” Tightly fitted stretch fabrics gave a pronounced outline to forms that countered prevalent notions of beauty and sexuality. In the meeting of body/dress, we can see the clothes as reshaping the body and we can imagine the redesigned body as actual, shaping the clothes. The translucent garment in the FRC, padded on the shoulder blades and the right hip, displays key aspects of the collection: asymmetry, a departure from the deeply-rooted ideal of symmetry, and unconventional physical augmentations, not placed on typically sexualized areas of the commercialized female physique. Left and right silhouettes differ and the shape morphs as we shift our position through 360 degrees. The redesigned body wasn’t for everyone: Vogue and Elle photographed the collection without pads. Merce Cunningham was attuned to it, and the result was Scenario, a collaboration in which dancers wearing Kawakubo’s padded costumes moved to his choreography, within her concept of a fixed white frame. I have never, not once in my life, had a phobia. Until now. And I’m gonna be honest, I never understood them, I always thought “get over it, it’s just a spider, etc. walk away.” Until l, of course myself, became severely claustrophobic. To the point my entire body broke out in sweat and I was drenched within 30 seconds and my face looked like a very ripe tomato...and I almost passed out while trying on my finished spacesuit and helmet for the first time. It is not just mental, it is very physical. BUT, our mental minds do control a lot, if not everything. After six months, I was not able to overcome my claustrophobia, but I was able to come to a type of meeting of the minds with it. When we calm our minds and sit with the fear, NOT try and push it away, we can sit with it in a different way, that makes it “doable”. Playing an astronaut in AWAY made me push into the sharp edges in a way I never thought it would. This was such an important lesson for me...in so many ways. I hope that in sharing this you might feel less alone in whatever it is that takes over your mind and therefore body. ‘Spaceman’ by Chris Searl Back in 1961, a young chimpanzee by the name of Ham was strapped to a Mercury Redstone rocket and fired into the Earth’s orbit. For 16 minutes 39 seconds the little Cameroonian primate soared through space, not looking out the window, but rather pushing buttons and pulling leavers so as to avoid the remote-control electric shocks the ground staff could inflict upon him should he not follow his flight training perfectly. Gravity eventually pulled him back to Earth and he plopped safely into the Atlantic where he was rescued by the military. In just over a quarter hour Ham had gone from unknown banana eating, shit flinging test pilot to total global icon. The hairy little bastard was a goddamn American hero! Although the USSR had already sent a man into orbit, it was Ham’s flight that launched the USA and the rest of the world’s imaginations into the possibility of potential of space travel and along with that, also kicked off an obsession with astronauts that lasts to this day. In those early decades of shooting for the stars, when the space race between the US and the USSR was at fever pitch, each successful launch and safe return to Earth by astronauts was celebrated like Tupac’s hologram playing at Cochella for the first time. Astronauts were the biggest celebrities in the world, but more than just fame, it was what they represented that captured mankind’s hearts and minds; the potential of humankind, the wonder of human achievement, the hope that when we put our minds to it, anything could be accomplished. One of the sweetest collaborations to hit the shelves last year, between Artists Ron English and D*Face, merging D*Face’s iconic D*Dog character with English’s iconic Grin. We were lucky enough to have a friend on site at last years DesignerCon who managed to put a plan in action to get one back to us here in Aus, and even went the extra mile to get the artists to sign it. Big love! The ‘D*dog Grin’ stands approximately 15 inches tall, and is comprised of 3 parts - A base, stem and the grin itself. This was a DesignerCon exclusive release, and was limited to 250pcs. I don’t think we’ve seen a collaboration between two artists at this caliber in quite so time, so it was super exciting to see these two work together to create a figure in vinyl form. The figure came nicely packaged in a custom box, with all the protective accessories expected with such a release. Super happy to have this one in the collection! IN REAL LIFE 2020 group Show Keystone Art Space September 1-30 What does art look like during a pandemic? We find ourselves looking at what is being made on a screen more often lately. How does that change our perception of it? Some may find comfort looking at works through the sterility of an electronic screen, while others find this way of seeing lacks something. Pixels on a screen don’t always illustrate the whole of the work - you might miss the depth of the brushstrokes on a painting, the reflection of pigments and sheen as you pass by in reflecting light, the dimensionality of a sculpture or installation in 3-D space. Even so, we are fortunate that we even have the ability to view things online during a pandemic. If the screen is all we have access to, we embrace it. The gallery world has pivoted, providing for both an online presence as well as a personal experience. This new way of seeing art was already on the rise. It expanded as a social media movement where sharing the experience digitally became PART of the experience. People viewing artwork or performance no longer had to wait until they ran into someone who would describe what they had seen or heard. They sent photos and videos as they spectated, increasing visibility and translating the spectacle into a virtual dialog. Several months ago we entered a different time. A time where to protect each other and enjoy ourselves we have to keep our distance. A time when the experience might be created for one. Keystone Art Space is both artist work space and gallery environment. Although we have cancelled our artist-curated shows for 2020, we have decided to hold a group show featuring the many talents of the artists who have their studios here. IN REAL LIFE is our own first experiment in this new way of seeing.
