Perry Wallace: Quietly Blazing Trails NASHVILLE, TN — When Perry Wallace arrived at Pearl High School in the fall of 1963, the outstanding Wharton Junior High School alum was ready to play his clarinet for the institution’s widely recognized band. Little did he or his peers and teachers know, a soon-to-be legend was quietly among them, hovering overhead in the hallways with his 6 foot tall plus frame and genuine smile. It did not take long for Pearl High basketball coach Cornelius Ridley, himself a Pearl High basketball Tiger alum, to hear Wallace had played on Wharton’s junior varsity basketball squad and would make a good player at Pearl, a legendary institution known for grooming champions in sports and academia. Where do you like to hike? Along the river? On some of our high bluffs? Down in some of the deep, dark hollows where roaring waterfalls may hide? There are more than 100 miles of trails at Buffalo National River that may lead you to these very kinds of places. But there are also quieter places, places off the beaten path where you may go to find solitude, reflection, and peace. You may also find a touch of our history, a small piece of those folks who were here before us. A good way to find these out-of-the-way places is to follow the old roads that folks used so many years ago. Most of them are still there if you take the time to look. These old road traces lead you back through history to another time. Scroll through these photographs for a sneak peek of an old route through the Upper Buffalo Wilderness! (km) Photo descriptions: 1. We approach some rock walls, carefully laid stones that delineate the old driveway to the Hedges home. 2. The stone front steps of the Hedges old homeplace, which is now being reclaimed by nature. 3. The barn built by William “Pickle” Edgmon about 100 years ago. Still standing strong but starting to show its age. 4. A beautiful fall scene on the Buffalo River at the Pickle Hole, strewn with large boulders. 5. The most bitter sweet moment of life happened when Coach Swinney called me on New Year’s Eve offering me an opportunity to fulfill a life long dream and begin a College Coaching Career at my Alma Mater and now defending National Champions! • These last 3 1/2 years of creating a brand and a business out of virtually nothing has been one of the best experiences of my life, mainly because the the amazing people I had the pleasure to meet and work with. With the decision of the SWAC Council of Presidents and Chancellors to postpone fall sports contests, we are reviewing options for the 47th Annual Bayou Classic that was to be played in November 2020. The 47th Annual Bayou Classic has been postponed until Spring and will not be played in November 2020. The organizers of Bayou Classic agree with SWAC’s decision as the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, team staff, campus faculty, fans and supporters are our top priority. And while, Fall football and the Annual Bayou Classic are cultural staples, the organizers of Bayou Classic commit to developing a plan so this important historic tradition continues when it is safe to do so. With the planned move of SWAC football to the Spring, we remain optimistic that the iconic Bayou Classic, ranked as the #1 HBCU Classic in the nation, will be played between Southern University and Grambling State University at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans at some time in the future. Until then we ask for all Bayou Classic fans to stay safe, wear your mask in public and follow Centers for Disease Control guidelines to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
