What if we looked at people who struggle with addiction like they were trying to fix something rather than screw something up? “Addicts” aren’t bad people. They are people who are responding to the broken world around them, the best way they know how. I just wonder what would happen if we approached them with the benefit of the doubt more often, if we offered empathy rather than judgement. Maybe I’m crazy, but maybe I’m not. In all my years as a therapist I’ve never found being judgmental to work as a healing agent. What have I found to work? Asking someone about their pain and listening to them when they offer me an answer. Like really, really listening. Since Rem has started preschool I get some special one on one time with my dude twice a week! I absolutely loveeee it. I’ve noticed when he’s alone he’s always playing by my side or in a room nearby. I can hear all his motorcycle noises and am constantly being asked, “mama watch this,” usually followed by him jumping off something. He holds my hand and gives me loves without being asked. He’s calmer and more attentive. He listens and talks to me about whatever toddler gibberish he is brewing. It’s actually been such a gift for me. Not only to watch my daughter learn and grow as she enjoys school, but to bond with my son when he’s not so busy and crazy 😂. I think we both needed this and I can tell he loves it as much as I do. This year has been so necessary in so many ways. Like how have we been ignoring so much injustice, heartache, and ignorance for so long? As much as I consider myself politically aware and socially minded, I can’t believe that it took the insanity of 2020 to wake me (and so many of us) up. I feel concerned about everything, but most pressing for me in this moment is dismantling systemic racism and doing whatever we can to reverse and halt climate change. If I could ask people reading to take an action, any of these would do: VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! I can’t say it enough. And if I’m preaching to the choir, then I ask you to help get out the vote. Vote Forward (@votefwd) is a program that helps volunteers send handwritten letters to unregistered and low-propensity voters encouraging them to vote. Color of Change (@colorofchange) is a non-profit organization that designs campaigns to end practices that contribute to systemic racism. Their goal is to champion solutions that move all of us forward. I also always recommend supporting the ACLU (@aclu_nationwide) and Human Rights Campaign (@humanrightscampaign). Learn about Intersectional Environmentalism (@intersectionalenvironmentalist). This movements goal is to be an inclusive version of environmentalism that focuses on the connection between injustices happening to marginalized communities and injustices happening to planet earth. Just wow... We truly live in gods country now. Savannah Bay that turns into Lake Chickamauga. It’s HUGE! We spent the 4th out there tubing and boating. So much fun. We then had an invite from new friends in our neighborhood that took @gofigurecarrie and family to go white water kayaking down the Hiwassee River. It took 3 hours to get down it!!! Simply incredible. I feel so blessed to be able to do all of this. We moved down to Chattanooga for all of this. We had this move on our vision board for years. BUT we now have it as a reality. This is the next chapter. It’s going to be tons of fun, YES, we still will work 😉 helping our team of coaches build their business and helping clients on their fitness journey. But today I just want to share my WHY. : : I started my personal development journey in the beginning of this pandemic. It has taught me to really step out of my comfort zone and to do what I truly love! : : My daughter is the reason why I want to achieve my goals (personal & career)! I am her role model and this is why I’m learning how to navigate and teach her the values I want that I didn’t get growing up. There’s obviously bumps along the way but motherhood will never be perfect.I am learning how to quiet my mind and stop myself from being so frustrated when I discipline her. See, I grew up in a typical Filipino home where smacking/hitting and giving “palo” is the way to go. But I see that it has affected my daughter the way she defends herself in certain situations. I see her imitate my actions when I am angry and it has given me the perspective to fully take control of what I do and say around her. I want to be a better person for her. : : As this journey unfolds, I am seeing myself evolve into this person I have always dreamed of. An empowered leader. An exceptional mother. A loving wife. Also da kann man auch einfach mal eine Windel zur Ablenkung in die Hand geben, wenn beispielsweise auf einem fremden Wickeltisch grad kein Spielzeug zur Hand ist. Ach ja, wir switchen übrigens gerade zwischen Grösse 3 und 4. Riding a full fledged wave of grief the last couple of days. . . Anger is a resounding feature. I am a grumpy pile. Mad at the dog. Garden is neglected, so is my yoga practice. Jealous of old friends. Temper is short. I want to scream. I want to cry. I want ME back. Me before I fell. . . . The downward spill…. the dog is more anxious the more I am frustrated. Old friends may be old friends because my temper has been unpleasant all along. Dwelling on the past, screaming, sulking…. what good does it do besides push people away? . . . Neglect the garden, failure to cultivate potential growth means I am feeding a lifeless box or one filled with noxious plants — emotions. . . . Yes, I am angry AND I recognize the work that must be done. Yes, I am jealous AND I realize the cool shit I am able to do. Yes, I want to scream AND cry AND hopefully laugh tomorrow. Yes, I am back to work with incredible purpose potential AND I miss being a climbing ranger. Yes, I am in pain all day everyday AND I still smile on those days. I’ve been laying low on social media this summer #listening #learning, but we’ve still managed to have some fun times. As Emily and Oliver head back to in person school (can’t believe this is happening) I thought I’d share a little bit of our summer. We spent time glamping at Zion National Park, hiked through Bryce Canyon, marched in the #juneteenth protest downtown, hiked in Millcreek and Cottonwood Canyons a fair bit, hit the High Unitas a couple of times (Lofty Lake Loop is stunning), spent a lot of time skateboarding, and Oliver got to Rock Climb with his uncle. We wore masks, tried to social distance when we could, and did our best to stay close as a family despite losing my job and coping with all the ugliness in the world right now. I’m so lucky to have these two as my adventure companions! Trying to understand my aunt’s recurrence of stage 4 pancreatic cancer (with my family being her caregiver), I want to share with you the tips that resonates with me. It’s a huge mental & physical stress on everyone; unfortunately most of us will be directly or indirectly effected by it, as nearly 1 in 2 Canadians develop cancer in their lifetime.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ There are many ways you can help someone who has cancer:⁣⁣ - Listen first, there’s no need to offer advice or opinions unless you’re asked.⁣⁣ - Learn about the type of cancer they have, it might be draining for them emotionally & physically to explain again & again.⁣⁣ - Prepare yourself for changes in how they’ll look & act as may have lost hair or weight, and exhausted from treatments. ⁣⁣ - Make sure the time is right for you to visit especially during COVID, give them a chance to decline. Never take it personally if they or their caregiver is suddenly too tired, cranky or ill.⁣⁣ - Let them be sad. Even if treatment seems to be going well, they may start talking about serious things like funeral plans. You can help by listening. Then encourage them to talk things over with their loved ones or psychologist.⁣⁣ - If they cry, don’t try to stop them. Reassure them that it’s OK to cry. As upsetting as it is for you to watch, tears are a natural response to distress & may be a very important release for them.⁣⁣ - Don’t forget their caregivers need help too, being the main support for someone with cancer can be exhausting. ⁣⁣ - Understand every diagnosis is unique. You simply cannot predict how they are feeling or know what they’re going through. Another Saturday and another day spent exploring a gorgeous New England trail. We originally planned to go to Franconia Falls Trail. But there was an overwhelming amount of cars parked along the highway so we decided to skip it. We drove up a little further to Sabbaday Falls Trail and hit a jackpot. The falls themselves were absolutely gorgeous and the fact that there were just a handful of people made it a win win.
