Corporal Ciara M. Durkin - Remembering an American Hero Army Corporal Ciara M. Durkin, 30, of Quincy, Mass.; was Killed In Action on this day in 2007 at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. Ciara was assigned to the 726th Finance Battalion, Massachusetts Army National Guard, West Newton, Mass. Durkin was a 1996 graduate of Fontbonne Academy in Milton and joined the Army National Guard in October 2005. Ciara was the type of person who would go out of her way to help someone in need. In April of 2004, they credited Ciara with helping save the life of a contractor who fell 26 feet after slipping off a ladder in the building that she had worked. She was passionate about her job, which included making sure the soldiers finances were in order and that their families were getting benefits. She wanted to be somewhere where she could help. Durkin loved life and her family. While home on leave, she made time for all her nieces and nephews and helped one of her sisters finish some home remolding projects. She talked about buying a home with her brother Pierce. Ciaras family and friends are always in our thoughts, especially today, as they remember their loved one. Sergeant 1st Class Andrew Weathers was assigned as a combat medic to 2nd Battalion, 7th SFG (A) ODA 7221, when he died from a gunshot wound on this day in 2014 while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. He had been in the Army for 11 years. He was also attached to the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade before becoming a Green Beret. Awards include the Silver Star with valor and a Purple Heart. “I am sure that if Andrew had it to do over again, he would choose the same path. He believed in the mission and wanted to make the world a better place, Weathers sister said. We know that he made a difference in every life he touched. Looking down on this Ram Kangaroo APC shows us the hole in the roof, which is how the infantry got in and out. The Kangaroo was a tank with the turret removed. This is why the hole is circular - it’s the turret ring. One Man Army: Gurkha Dipprasad Pun On the night of 17 September 2010, Sergeant Dipprasad Pun, 31, was on duty alone at night when he heard some noises and realized he was surrounded. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pun opened fire with a machine gun, a rifle and a grenade launcher. He single handedly fought off up to 30 Taliban trying to storm his position near Babaji in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At one point he had to use the tripod of his machine gun to beat away a militant climbing the walls of the compound. Team — this hits close to home with me. A1C Elizabeth Jacobson wasn’t just the first Security Forces Airman to die during Operation Iraqi Freedom, she was also the first woman in the Air Force to be killed in that conflict, and she was 21 years old. Liz was a well known and loved member of Team Goodfellow. A photo of her was beautifully framed by my wingman, Chief Thomas Good, and hung proudly in the Command Chief Office in the 17th Training Wing, where it still hangs today. I also framed her photo in my office at the pentagon...as a daily reminder of “why” I serve and to “whom” I serve. September 2016 - I had the pleasure of being the medical technician for this stud. At the thought of not passing my test and prolonging his inpatient stay he was extremely anxious and sad. While prepping him he shared his life story with me. I cheered him on during his test and thankfully, he passed. Shortly after he was discharged. He urged me to come to the Veteran’s Day event the following weekend so that I could meet his wife. He greeted me with a huge hug and smiling face. He explained how thankful he was that I was his technician that day. The best way I celebrate Veteran’s Day is by serving other Vets. PRESS RELEASE ALLEGATION OF CORRUPTION, DPO RECALLED, CP ORDERS PROBE The attention of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Edgal Imohimi, has been drawn to the Punch Newspaper publication of Friday, August 24, 2018, captioned Power-drunk Lagos DPO leads team to mosque, raid adherents, others. The reporter mentioned that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Pen Cinema Police Division, Lagos State, Harrison Nwabuisi, has been conducting raids during which he allegedly arrested innocent residents and extorted money from them. He further reported that the police operation took place on Wednesday, being the last day of the Sallah holiday, at Alimi Ogunyemi Street, in the Ifako Ijaiye area and mentioned one Sheriff Aranjure as a prime witness to the alleged extortion by the DPO. Sequel to the allegation, the CP has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, DCP Yetunde Longe, to investigate the officer and other ranks against whom the allegation was made. He equally directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, DCP Elkanah Ayuba, to recall the DPO to the Command Headquarters to allow unbiased investigation into the matter. The Command is therefore appealing to Mr. Sheriff Anjure, said to be a vital and indeed other witnesses in the matter, to make themselves available to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCIID, Panti Yaba, to assist police investigation. While recognising the fact that raiding is a major crime fighting strategy of the police, given that it enables proactive intervention into a budding problem, the CP however said, that it must be purposeful, corruption free and Intelligence driven. He therefore assures members of the public that if the allegation is true, any officer or men found culpable in the matter, would be appropriately sanctioned in accordance with the relevant sections of the Police Act. If you haven’t stepped outside of your comfort zone, you may be missing out on some great opportunities in your life. This event changed my life and taught me what being mentally tough is all about, The Bataan Death March. 1. I only did it back in 2018 because I was in the field and some guys mentioned rucking this event in the heavy division (minimum 35 pounds) and I was like, “sure why not” with no train up for it whatsoever; terrible idea to not train at all for a marathon. 🤦♂️ 😂 2. We begin the ruck and as soon as the event starts these guys start casually walking and I let them know that at this pace and on this extremely difficult course with with all the sand and rucking up mountains/hills, we’re never gonna make it in under 12 hours for 26.2 miles so I dapped them up and started running/walking which is what we originally planned. 😂 3. I was in the top 26th out of 633 competitors and everything was smooth sailing for the 1st 19 miles and outta no where I straight up hit a wall going up hill. This is where I learned about being mentally tough because I had never been in a position like this before in my life. So many negative thoughts came in my head for the last 6 plus miles because now my ruck and boots just felt flat out heavy and were wearing me down. My physical abilities had always carried me along my fitness journey during everything I’ve done but not there at that moment. I ended up finishing 70th out of 633 competitors (only 521 finished) and my body was literally tore up for a week but I didn’t care because this event started a new chapter in my life, endurance training in combination with strength training. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone! *** And no I wouldn’t recommend running a marathon with no train up lol.
