Today in Black History: Otis Redding, one of the greatest American soul singers/songwriters, was born on this day in 1941 in Dawson, Georgia. Redding was raised in Macon, where he started singing at a young age and was influenced by musicians such as Sam Cooke and Little Richard. His breakthrough into soul music came when Redding drove to Memphis, Tennessee with Johnny Jenkins and the Pinetoppers for a recording session at Stax Records in 1962. The Stax co-owner Jim Stewart allowed Otis to cut a few songs at the end of the recording session. The result was “These Arms of Mine”, which released that same year and launched his career. This was the first of many hit singles (including “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “Respect,” and “Try a Little Tenderness) and his open-throated, emotional style and powerful singing became the measure of the decades great soul artists. In December of 1967, Redding and four members of his band were killed when their chartered plane crashed into a Wisconsin lake. He was only 26 years old. Shortly before his death, he recorded his number one hit single “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” which shot to the top of the charts. So excited to finally get my hands on a #Thorens TD160. Since my preamp has two phono stages I was able to fully A/B compare it with my Music Hall (Pro-Ject) 5.1 and the Thorens wins hands down. Amazing, since this one was built in 1970 and has all original parts (except for a newer cartridge) and belt. Big ups for great engineering. Plus, you cant beat the classic styling. Honestly, this makes me happy just to look at it. I know... Im a dork. Mas me encanta sempre reouvir esse Blue Train, de 1957, tido por muitos como o primeiro álbum solo de John Coltrane. Gravado com um timaço que tem Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Kenny Drew e a “cozinha” monumental de Paul Chambers e Philly Joe Jones, o disco fluí deliciosamente. O solo de trompete de Lee Morgan em Moment’s Notice mostra que ele poderia ter sido tão grande e influente quanto Miles. Mas Morgan, que tinha apenas 20 anos quando gravou com Trane, tretou demais em várias ocasiões da sua curta vida e acabou morto aos 33 anos pela própria mulher com um tiro no coração numa discussão entre eles no intervalo de uma gig em um clube de Nova York.
