Projected high this weekend is 111ºF in Los Angeles. Curiosity, the privilege of free time, and a Photoshop subscription led me to this post. First map shows public cooling centers, which are open throughout LA County to try and help those w/o AC, including people who live unhoused. Second map shows the cooling centers overlaid onto the unhoused population per the 2019 Point in Time Count, approx. 59,000 people living unhoused in LA County. Januarys 2020 Count estimated a 12.7% rise, approx. 66,436. Couldnt find a new map, though, so Im using 2019 numbers. Imagine 12.7% more people. (Also, these counts are notoriously low - they are visual counts performed by volunteers. I volunteered this past year and can tell you - they certainly dont FEEL scientific. But they are, unfortunately, the best that we have.) Zooming into two examples: Plummer Park has a capacity of 30 people, in an area with approx 30 - 500 unhoused people per square mile. Lafayette Multipurpose, cap 45, in an area w approx 100 - 2,908 unhoused people /sqm. They are the only centers around. They open at noon. (btw, I had to search independently for capacity and for center phone numbers - neither provided on the master map by the county) (btw btw, the above two centers are run by cities - West Hollywood and Los Angeles - not LA County. There are no LA County facilities in this area) In January, the county estimated 66k people living unhoused outside. There are likely more people living housed inside with bad or no AC. Did they not expect it to be hot this summer? How many people should we expect to suffer heat stroke this weekend? If youre tired of waiting for action from county or city government, seek out a local volunteer organization. They could use your support, either in-person or via donation. - Took a solo hike this morning above Manitou Springs, Colorado, USA. The blue dot is my apartment, the green line is the way I went out, and the red is the way I came back. I took a drainage and met up with Ute Pass Trail near the top of ridge. This was one of the most challenging hikes I’ve done.

The Mighty Mac Swim might have been postponed this weekend, but that didn’t stop our crew from doing something grand. Swimming around Mackinac Island this weekend was just what I needed to bring back my love of the sport. Towing my inflatable duck around the island brought so many smiles, and by the end of the swim it was the talk of the town! Circumnavigating by water, we met many challenges, but we made our goal safely and had a lot of fun along the way. 28. 7. 2020 - Sněžka ❤️ Tak jako převážná většina lidí, i my jsme byli nuceni zrušit naši letní dovolenou u moře a najít si místo, kde ji strávíme.. Náš první plán bylo, pronajmout si nějakou menší dřevěnici na horách 🏡 To bohužel neklaplo, v době, kdy jsme hledali, byly dostupné už jen velké chaty, pro nás zcela zbytečné... Po různých pokusech a hledáních jsme našli skvělý apartmán v Peci pod Sněžkou, kde jsme celých 5 dní hospodařili 😍 Vzhledem k umístění apartmánu jsme se rozhodli na Sněžku vyrazit pěšky rovnou z místa ubytování.. V době, kdy jsme byli v Krkonoších se ve velkém řešil přetlak návštěvníků na Sněžce, a také proto jsme se rozhodli, že si zahrajeme na ranní ptáčata a vyrazíme brzy! 🌅🕖 Naše trasa tedy začínala ve Velké Úpě - vyšlápli jsme si to po žluté TZ 🟡 kolem Žlebského potoka až po rozcestí Nad Portášovými boudami.. Toto počáteční stoupání byl po ránu docela záhul 😴🥵, ale musím říct, že nic horšího už nás asi nečekalo! Nad Portášovými boudami jsme pomalu začínali potkávat první turisty, ale nic strašného, asi tak 3-4 skupinky 🚶🏻♀️🚶🏻♂️🚶🏻. Dali jsme si snídani 🍔🌭🥓🥩 a fičeli jsme vzhůru ⬆️ dále po žluté na Růžohorky, Růžovou horu až po Růžovohorské sedlo. Od Růžohorek se už začínala zvyšovat koncentrace návštěvníků hor (někteří opravdu nebyli hodni označení slovem TURISTA) 🤯 Ale stále nic strašného.. I to je důvod, proč doporučujeme si přivstat a vyrazit na hory brzy! Po zmiňované 🟡 TZ jsme dorazili až na samotnou Sněžku! Už když jsme se přibližovali, přesvědčili jsme se o tom, že počasí zde je pekelně nevyzpytatelné.. Rozdíl teplot byl cca 15 stupňů 🥶 a vítr jde z 0 na 100 ❄️☃️💨 Proto jsme se zde moc nezdražovali a fičeli směrem dolů! Cestu zpět jsme si naplánovali přes Obří důl, tzn. ze Sněžky po červené 🔴 po trase Česko-polského přátelství (nebo nějak tak podobně se jmenuje 😂), od rozc. Jubilejní cesta už po 🔵 na Slezský dům a dále přes Obří důl dolů do Pece ☑️ Bylo to náročné, ale určitě to stálo za to! Krkonoše jsme si naprosto zamilovali a budeme se zde určitě vracet častěji 🖤🏔 - @cestohratky on Instagram

- In 1994, in a rehab facility, a doctor, a social worker, and a nurse staged an intervention. They told me I had to accept that I was a quadrapalegic, that I would live my life in a wheelchair. Today I rode 57.1 (admittedly slow) miles on my bike.

Facebook just reminded me that on this day 8 years ago I’d just returned from backpacking Europe for 3 months with two of my best mates where I had the epiphany that I needed to pursue Motorsport for a living. I sold my house, sold or packed my things and started a 3,440km (2,137 mile) drive to Melbourne to take the first steps. Today I started a drive that’s only 20km shorter to head from Austin to Seattle for round two of the Formula Drift championship. If you have a meaningful, soul searching caption I can copy / paste here to sound really sophisticated that’d be great. I’m just glad the fuel price is half what it is back home.
