Lennart Larsson of Vråka, Sweden, discovered a 2 meter (6’5”) tall stone when ploughing his field a few years ago. Little aware of that it was a Viking Age runestone, he decided to keep it for later needs. It wasn’t until he cleaned it and was about to put it to use as a steppingstone that that he discovered that the stone was covered with runes. . Lennart immediately contacted the local museum and archeologists, who were amazed to hear about the find. Even though Sweden has thousands of runestones, it is rare to discover new ones. The location of the find wasn’t surprising though. They previously found a huge silver treasure on the very same property. Other silver treasure finds have also been made in the region, indicating that a road went through there. Runestones were often placed along roads where they could be seen by all passing by. Runologist Magnus Källström at the Rune department of the Swedish National Heritage Board has examined the stone. He considers it a sensational find isince it was years ago a previously unknown runestone was found in Sweden. A traditional runic beast biting his own tail encircles the stone. The shape of the beast’s head points at the stone originating from the early 1000s. This is interesting since the silver treasure found on the property had coins minted in 1020, which could indicate that the stone was risen by the same family who buried the treasure. Magnus Källström translated the runes to: “Gärder raised this stone after Sigdjärv his father, Ögärd’s husband.” The female name Ögärd is interesting, since the composition has not been encountered previously. The runestone will now be cleaned and undergo preserving treatment, after which it will be risen anew near the site where it was discovered. OVER 200 driving offences were spotted by #Warwickshire Police’s Commercial Vehicle Unit during a five day operation in September. During the operation – carried out in support of Project Edward, the campaign for Every Day Without A Road Death – officers used the Op Tramline supercab, a specially-adapted HGV owned by Highways England, to look for risky driver behaviours that could cause or contribute towards a collision. During the week, forty-one people received Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) for using a handheld mobile phone whilst driving, often at high speed – a potential six points on their licence and a £200 fine. A further 68 people received TORs for not wearing a seatbelt – a potential £100 fine. Twenty people received TORs for not being in control of their vehicle – three points and a £100 fine – and 12 people were stopped for speeding. One man was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply after he was stopped for traffic offences on the M40 southbound. A significant quantity of the drug was recovered following a search of the vehicle. One HGV was seen driving on the hard shoulder at over 50mph where a family could potentially be stationary if broken down. When officers looked into his cab he was spotted on his mobile phone. Another driver was caught reading his delivery notes and using his phone while driving at the national speed limit on the M40. Officers also saw a driver watching TV on a laptop while travelling on the M40 at nearly 60mph. Project Edward focused on those who drive for work and around 35 per cent of all drivers stopped were in commercial vehicles – also putting their livelihoods in jeopardy. For two drivers, the offences were so serious they were referred to the Traffic Commissioner. PS Carl Stafford said “This is sadly only a snapshot of the week’s findings and unfortunately demonstrates the real driver behaviours that are taking place on a daily basis on our roads. “We will continue to proactively police Warwickshire’s roads including the M6, M40, M42 and M69 by looking for people that could pose serious danger to themselves and other road users. SAHIBGANJ: Geologists have found fossilised leaves, estimated to be around 150-200 million years old, in Jharkhand’s Sahibganj district. A couple of 20 cm by 5 cm fossilised leaves of genus Ptilophyllum have been found in Dudhkol mountain in Taljhari area on Saturday and further excavation is underway, lead geologist assistant professor Ranjit Kumar Singh of Sahibganj PG College said. “Such leaves were consumed by herbivorous dinosaurs. A CRACKDOWN on drug gangs has resulted in 50 arrests and the confiscation of drugs and over £20,000 over the last two weeks. Officers from across #Warwickshire Police executed warrants at addresses across the county – including homes in Leamington, Stratford and Rugby – and carried out various vehicle stops, as part of a focus on targeting county lines drug dealing. It was Warwickshire Police’s response to the national county lines week of action, coordinated by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC). A police spokesperson said they had seized ‘significant amounts’ of heroin, crack cocaine, cocaine and cannabis, while safeguarding vulnerable people and people at risk. Vehicles, more than £20,000 in cash, imitation firearms and knives, and 41 phones suspected to be linked to drug dealing were also recovered – vital in disrupting the county lines movement and providing officers with key intelligence. ‘County lines’ activity involves a group from a large urban area travelling to smaller locations to sell drugs. They may challenge an existing group from the local area or another county lines group in order to take over the local market – which often causes an increase in violence. The groups travel between urban and county locations on a regular basis to collect drugs and deliver cash. They will use local properties as a base for their activities – often acquired by force or coercion, referred to as ‘cuckooing’. Our new voting by mail law broke all records and increased people voting by more than 60% over the 2016 primary election! 406,425 votes were cast, by far the most since statehood. This could mean the end of Hawaii’s traditional low voter participation, empowering our local communities in a way we haven’t seen in generations. I helped write our voting by mail law based on the best practices of states that have successfully done this to make it easier for people to vote. But these results are significantly better than any other vote by mail state. That means this is because of you - local residents getting involved. Welcome to another throwback history post as we travel to southeastern Ohio and to Jesse Owens State Park, our newest state park, and the Big Muskie. The Miners Memorial Park in Jesse Owens State Park is a monument to the achievements of @aepohio and its subsidiary Central Ohio Coal Company. One of the main attractions of this memorial is Big Muskie’s Bucket.” Big Muskie was the largest dragline ever built. The 220-cubic-yard, 240-ton bucket is a true engineering marvel. Due to the massive size of the machine, Big Muskie had to be built on site. Starting in 1967, more than 300 railcars and 250 trucks hauled the necessary pieces to Muskingum Mine. It took a team of engineers more than two years to erect Big Muskie. When completed, the massive machine stood 240-feet tall. The behemoth digger worked by dragging its bucket along the ground to strip away layers of soil and rock that covered high-sulfur coal. Big Muskie could lift 325 tons of earth and rock in a single bite. Between 1969 and 1991, Big Muskie ran 24 hours a day, 364 days a year, moving more than 483 million cubic yards of rock and earth. In the early 1990s, demand for high sulfur coal had declined significantly. The immense cost of powering Big Muskie could no longer be justified, and it was shut down. There were efforts to have Big Muskie preserved and relocated, but the money could not be raised and in May 1999 Big Muskie was disassembled and recycled. All that remains is the bucket. Today visitors can climb inside the bucket and imagine what it took to make such an enormous thing move. The Wall of Honor is another highlight of the area, showcasing past and present employees of Central Ohio Coal Company, the AEP subsidiary that operated the Big Muskie. In addition to the memorial features found in this part of the park, visitors can enjoy a picnic area with a shelter and a scenic overlook of the area.
