Edmund Albius was an enslaved 12 year old boy when he invented the technique to pollinate vanilla by hand orchids quickly and profitably. His technique revolutionize the Vanilla bean industry even though @mccormickspice gave credit to Famed botanist Charles Morren . The history books said that Morrens technique was slower in the 1830s. In 1841, Albius invented a technique that changed the game for French colonists to make its colony in Madagascar extremely profitable. So much so that Albius was granted clemency for a stealing crime for his enormous contribution to vanilla. The books say Albius died in poverty, but he made others extremely wealthy. In 2014, McCormick totally wrote Morren in the video but left Albius out. McCormick should not remove this video but they should come back and figure out how to make things right. I dont know if was an omission but so much of what contributions of black people of the diaspora are purposely written out because it cant be conceived that black people can do amazing things. It is why today, people think black people are only thugs when they can be so much more than athletes and entertainers. Media has a very important role in how people are portrayed and understood. Black people can be STEM experts and i would say Albius was a STEM expert by trade. Yesterday, I had the life altering experience of hearing Mahler’s Ninth Symphony live @sfsymphony led by the incomparable @mtilsonthomas. It goes without saying that we are living in troubling times. Mahler’s composition of this work is an inspiration in so many ways... but in the large scope of things, it is remarkable that, as a man that knew so much grief and misfortune (including the recent loss of his 4 year old daughter), he always chose life. He chose to compose, and to represent in his ingenious way the world he saw around him in his music. Celebrating life in the face of death. I’m grateful for the message. Every one of us has times when we need to know things will get better. For emotional health and spiritual stamina, everyone needs to be able to look forward to some respite, to something pleasant and renewing and hopeful, whether that blessing be near at hand or still some distance ahead. My declaration is that this is precisely what the gospel of Jesus Christ offers us, especially in times of need. There is help. There is happiness. There really is light at the end of the tunnel. It is the Light of the World, the Bright and Morning Star, the “light that is endless, that can never be darkened” (Mosiah 16:9). It is the very Son of God Himself. To any who may be struggling to see that light and find that hope, I say, hold on. Keep trying. God loves you. Things will improve. Even if you cannot always see that silver lining on your clouds, God can, for He is the very source of the light you seek. He does love you, and He knows your fears. He hears your prayers. Some blessings come soon, some come late, and some don’t come until heaven, but for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come. Hanno pagato il prezzo più alto in termini di vite umane durante il picco Covid. Sono morti soli, in una sofferenza senza fine. Negli ospedali, nelle case di riposo, senza il conforto dei figli e dei nipoti. In questi mesi di pandemia si calcola anche che circa 300 mila over 65 sono stati costretti a chiedere aiuto per mangiare. Ho raccontato qui decine di anziani che chiamavano la polizia e i carabinieri perché affamati e con il frigo vuoto. Ecco, oggi è la Giornata Internazionale delle persone anziane e questa premessa mi è sembrata doverosa. Perché questo giorno dedicato a loro possa essere anche un motivo per fermarci e riflettere. Perché tutti noi abbiamo una responsabilità enorme nei loro confronti. E non basta la gratitudine verso i nostri padri e i nostri nonni. Abbiamo il dovere di andare oltre, impegnarci tutti per difenderli da questa tempesta sanitaria, sociale ed economica. Così come loro ci hanno protetto e accudito nelle nostre fasi della vita con una generosità senza precedenti, oggi noi dobbiamo ricambiare quella lezione a questa straordinaria generazione ormai fragile. Non a parole ma garantendo servizi di cura e assistenza più efficienti, restituendo loro quei valori di solidarietà, di integrazione e di dignità. Oggi con il cuore ci stringiamo a tutti loro. Ao contrário do que pensaram alguns amigos o propósito não foi tanto lamber a cria, estabelecendo a equanimidade entre Fulvia e Pier Paolo. Esistono alcuni dubbi sulla proprietà dellopera: se fosse stata commissionata da Paolo Giovio, vescovo di Nocera, o che vi fosse stata portata da Giambattista Castaldo, dopo il Sacco di Roma del 1527, oppure che sia stata di proprietà di Papa Giulio II. Nel 1686 lopera lasciò Nocera, e passò nelle mani del marchese del Carpio Gaspar de Haro y Guzman, viceré di Napoli, che la portò in Spagna, ma nel 1793 Conca lo menzionò allinterno di Descrizione odeporica della Spagna nelle collezioni del Duca dAlba a Madrid, dal quale prese il nome. Lo zar Nicola I di Russia lo acquistò e mise nel Museo dellErmitage a San Pietroburgo, dove subì il trasporto su tela, causando delle fratture nella parti di destra e del centro. Lopera passò in modo clandestino dal governo sovietico al collezionista americano Andrew W. Mellon, la cui collezione fu donata al nascente National Gallery of Washington. Un disegno preparatorio della composizione si trova nel Musée des Beaux-Arts di Lille dove sono visibili gli studi di composizione e i ripensamenti come il gesto del Giovannino. Il pittore urbinate raffigura la Vergine dellUmiltà, seduta a terra (come volevano gli ordini mendicanti, perché più vicina al popolo), appoggiata a un tronco di albero, vestita con mantello celeste e sandali allantica, con il Bambino nudo su una gamba. Gesù gioca con la croce di San Giovannino, inginocchiato e vestito di vello di cammello, gesti che allude alla sua futura Passione, diventando così il fulcro del dipinto. Sullo sfondo luminoso e bucolico sono visibili alcune case, mentre in primo piano i tre corpi sono disposti come una piramide. Raffaello ha ripreso lo sfumato leonardesco per la sfumatura dei corpi e Michelangelo per la rappresentazione dei corpi plastici. - @italiartistica on Instagram

Happy birthday to French artist Edgar Degas, who was born on this day in 1834. At the last Impressionist show in 1886, the 52-year-old Edgar Degas exhibited six nudes from a series of pastels on paper depicting women at their toilette. One of the things that I appreciate about the works from this period are the fact that the women are wholly absorbed in their bathing rituals, presented with a tone of matter-of-fact beauty rather than a lewd voyeurism. 4 de março de 1394, nasce, no Porto, O Infante Dom Henrique de Avis, 1.º duque de Viseu e 1.º senhor da Covilhã. Filho de D. João I, fundador, em Portugal, da dinastia de Avis, e de sua esposa, Dona Filipa de Lencastre. Fez parte da denominada Ínclita Geração, constituída pelos 5 filhos de D. João I que chegaram à idade adulta, notabilizando-se, cada um deles, por um elevado grau de sabedoria mercê da educação que a sua mãe procurou ministrar-lhes. Para além de D. Henrique, que viria a ser o impulsionador dos Descobrimentos portugueses, o viajado e cultíssimo Infante D. Pedro, conhecido, por Príncipe das Sete Partidas que desempenharia o cargo de regente de Afonso V de Portugal. Em 1414, D. Henrique convence o pai a conquistar Ceuta, no norte de África, cidade muito importante para o controlo das rotas comerciais marítimas entre o oceano Atlântico e o levante. A cidade viria a cair nas mãos dos portugueses no ano seguinte, tendo D. Henrique sido armado cavaleiro no local e recebido os títulos de Senhor da Covilhã e duque de Viseu. Em 1416, ser-lhe-ia entregue o governo desta praça-forte africana. Em 1419 D. Henrique já era detentor de uma armada que protegia os interesses de Portugal na navegação do estreito de Gibraltar. O arquipélago da Madeira já seria conhecido dos portugueses desde o século XIV mas a sua posse efetiva só é realizada entre 1419 e 1420, por João Gonçalves Zarco e Tristão Vaz Teixeira, homens de confiança de D. Henrique. A administração das vastas riquezas patrimoniais da Ordem de Cristo, herdeira da Ordem dos Templários, é, em 1420, entregue a D. Henrique que as utiliza no desenvolvimento das artes de navegação e na construção dos navios que seriam usados na exploração do oceano Atlântico. Em 1427, os seus navegadores descobrem as primeiras ilhas dos Açores, na altura desabitadas, que são povoadas por portugueses. O rei D. Duarte I, doa ao seu irmão D. Henrique, o Arquipélago dos Açores. Em 1450, os navegadores portugueses descobrem o arquipélago de Cabo Verde. D. Henrique faleceu em Sagres, onde fundara a sua escola náutica, a 13 de novembro de 1de 1460, estando os seus restos mortais sepultados no Mosteiro da Batalha. °#infantedhenrique - @portugal_history on Instagram
