I stopped counting after 100 days of lockdown in a city I love so dearly. Those who stick around in New York are in it for better or for worse. So when the pandemic hit, I didnt know what it would take away or add to how I view the city and its people. Days seemed hazy and dystopian. Overnight, a city that sounds like a conglomeration of every sound you can imagine became scary and ghostly. Laughter from playgrounds and music from the neighborhood bar was taken over by mind numbing, anxiety-inducing incessant rings of sirens from ambulances, police cars, and fire trucks. I used this time to take stock of the things Im grateful for. I watched my neighbors not let confinement define their spirits. I heard it in the 7pm cheers that celebrated the gift of life, rainbow sketches on windows by children who cant fully fathom the nebulous world outside but wanted to spread hope. I saw people waving from windows, dogs play fetch on roofs, pigeons confused by the lack of scraps, Ubers with makeshift protective barriers inside cars, and more people take to biking than ever before. I dont know what a new normal is yet, as I believe were shaping it as we go, but there are things I miss from a pre-pandemic world that are quintessentially New York. I drew them over the lockdown to remind myself of the crowded, big-hearted, beautiful, and chaotic city that I fall more in love with every day. And while New York is slowly reopening and evolving in the resilient way it always does, take a moment to remember what makes the city unique for you. I have spent a long time in bed, not being able to open the curtains and face the day. But one day I decided to get up and get going again. To stand up and move my tired limbs, no matter how broken I felt. I was worried for a long time that I would never stop feeling the weight of things. But the thing is, instead of letting the weight press on top of my chest and letting it slowly crumble, I found a way to press the weight up like a weight lifter. To pick it up of myself and carry it up into the sky. And every day I pick it up a bit easier, a little bit faster. And on some days my muscles hurt too much to pick it up and carry it, and those are the days where I allow myself to rest and just feel it. And this only is possible because I am feeling everything. I am being vulnerable. I am open to it all. No matter how much it hurts. Because there is so much more strength in my vulnerability than in closing myself off. I am learning my pain. Like a chapter of a math book that I never quite get through the first time. I am still learning. Still practicing. Still finding different answers to different equations. And its not easy. Its crawling through the dirt sometimes and facing the spots that still need sweeping. And sometimes its simply moving with it. Dancing with it. Holding it in my hands and letting it walk alongside me. And there are more times where I let my soul dance. Because who said that I need a spotlight to do so? Rosaline This is a poem/song for Rosaline: the girl who broke Romeo’s heart (if you can call it that). I’m a bit obsessed with her. now that the days are getting colder and autumn is approaching, chances are, depressive episodes are coming for me. winter is my biggest depression trigger ever, and swedish winter is hellish to me (and like, most of us living here). i decided to sit down a little while ago and write down all my personal depression signs so i can be more mindful of when it might happen. it seems - well, depressing, to plan for depressive episodes, but that’s life with bipolar disorder. you gotta stay on top of your moods. i am a huge advocate for understanding your mental illness and knowing your triggers, warning signs, and symptoms. when i start feeling depressed, my extrovert heart grows uninterested in social interaction, and when i find myself around others i just feel so incredibly dull, bored and tired of playing the character that is myself. my energy is low and my motivation is pretty much zero. dishes pile up, teeth get that fuzzy feeling from not being brushed enough, room starts looking like a pigsty, it’s a whole mess. but once i realize that i might be depressed, the easier it gets to start fighting back, because you have to fight that damn depression until your will to retain your normal self is stronger than depression’s grip of your psyche. knowing what your depression looks like when it starts creeping up is really important. these are my signs of an incoming depression, what are your signs ? • • • #mentalhealth #mentalillness #mentalhealthawareness #psynligt #nostigma #mentalhealthwarrior #recovery #art #digitalart #artistsoninstagram #comic #crazyheadcomics - @crazyheadcomics on Instagram
