So often as designers we can lose focus of our work. Our day to day lives can exist within Figma, Adobe or Sketch. We can become obsessed with getting just the right hue or just the right box shadow. However, we must remember, we are first and foremost designers. Which means, we are not artists. We are not creating for others to derive meaning. For others to consume, ponder and move on. We are creating to produce clarity, guidance and meaning. To be a designer means using our superb, artisy talent to help businesses communicate visually. If you are a logo designer, you are helping a company to define and communicate their branding. If you are a marketing designer, you are helping companies communicate marketing campaigns, promotions and offers. If you are a UX designer you are helping companies define their digital product and using your design skills ensure both usability and brand expression within that product. Now, Im not poo pooing artists. Honestly I love art and love creating art when I can. And I think its super cool to be an artist. I still wish I was one, sometimes ☺️ Whats important to recognize, once you step into a business relationship, where someone is paying you to solve their problem through design. You take that responsibility seriously. You take the time to properly uncover business goals. You keep communication open, ensuring all along the way that the design you are working on is consistently aligned to the goal. We dont work in vacuums or silos. A great designer takes a step back, asks good questions and focuses on providing value. Always remember you arent selling design, you are selling the solution design solves. FAT LOSS. HOW? . . If you have been following on IG, you might just know that its #shredtember 😛 . . Fat loss. Its simple science. It comes down to 3 major things; ➡️Calories in vs calories out (deficit) ➡️Consistency and ➡️Patience. . . Simple, but complex, if you arent starting from a good place mentally, or metabolically. Or, giving up after 2 short weeks. It takes time. . . Take for an example someone who is only eating 1500 calories per day, over indulges on the weekends, then tries to cut calories further, and repeats the cycle. OR someone that decides to eat 1200 calories and once there weight loss stalls, has no where to go but down to 900 calories OR someone who is dieting and experiencing metabolic thermogensis adaptation (stalled weight loss). . . Fat loss phases needed to be approached with health still as a top priority. The slides above discuss the basics you need to know and understand, before you delve in dropping body fat. And before anything, you need to have a good relationship with food and your metabolism should be running high. . . Slide 3 explains TDEE. Knowing this means youre going to KNOW how much you should be eating, and where to potentially commence a deficit from. . . You also need to feel balanced, and not restricted. If not, that can lead to big problems. Pre-planning should be involved and flexible methods should be adhered too. Prepare. . . Consistency and patience are going to be key. You may need to change your habits, sacrifice a few things or educate yourself further on nutrition and training to get where you want be. . . The slides represent my personal targets, meals, training and routine in this current phase. These are MY macros, muscles & mindset targets. Dont you go trying them🤣 They are an example. NO ONE is the same. My targets change yearly too. Because the body changes. There is no cookie cutter approach to fat loss. The 3 things that are required from anyone going into said phase is: ➡️Calorie deficit, consistency and patience. . . When you reach adulthood, you’ll mostly need 6-9 hours each night and to do this efficiently as possible you should have a regular routine with the same bedtime and wake-up time every day. Although this can be difficult and doesn’t happen for most people, it’s important to stick to it as best as you can. Having naps during the day in order to feel better always feels like a good idea but it can disrupt your sleep routine if done on a regular basis. We need sleep to help our body repair, improve learning and memory, reduce our stress and anxiety levels, improve our creativity, support our growth and development and for many more reasons that are so important to a healthy life. Having less sleep than required can actually lead to weight gain, serious illnesses such as diabetes and strokes, increased anxiety and depression, other mental health problems, bad decisions that haven’t been thought through, headaches and bad moods or mood swings. This not only affects your life but also everyone else’s around you. It’s easier to get irritated with friends and family which can create issues and fallouts that could have been avoided!Ways to get better sleep include having a warm bath to wind down, having a set bedtime routine, having a healthy lifestyle regarding drugs and alcohol, avoiding caffeinated drinks in the late evening and having a comfortable bed with comfortable bedding. Do you beat yourself up when you don’t get much done during the day? Does it make you feel like a failure? That’s why we date. Now healing is all about creating a healthier and more loving relationship with yourself. But when do we take time for ourselves? When do we ‘date’ ourselves? What if those ‘lazy’ days are days we are meant to use to improve the relationship we have with ourselves but instead of doing that and using them wisely, we beat ourselves up? We tell us that we should be productive, was the dishes, tick off things on our endless to-do lists because without that we are useless and lazy. That is NOT going to help us feel better about ourselves. That is most definitely not going to improve the relationship we have with ourselves. This week is #BalanceAwarenessWeek and it’s really important to me as I’ve been helping to plan the first ever Vestibular Conference for @vestibularveda. Today’s topic was all about Navigating the Health System and was great presentation on how to get an accurate diagnosis with Dr. Kim Bell and and an open discussion with patients @true_kaylaisms and David Morrill. . I love that we kicked off with this topic as it is so important and the words “misdiagnosed” and “misinformed” came up often. There’s nothing quite like seeing a “D’s Best” ENT and having him tell you that your episodes of vertigo and feeling like you’re moving when standing still is normal (it’s not) and that it would go away with time (it didn’t) before finally admitting he didn’t have a clue. I saw some of the best neurologists in Dallas that never once mentioned migraine to me, instead almost blaming my symptoms on me, saying they were anxiety or depression induced (they weren’t). They completely overlooked key symptoms and history, unaware that migraine attacks don’t always include head pain. No one should ever have to deal with constant, terrifying symptoms while doctors just look at you like 🤷🏼♀️👍. . I was wrong about this one… - I used to have a very reductionist view of obesity. I used to think it was a condition entirely correlated with being lazy and lacking will-power. But, after 8 years of training clients and an undergraduate degree, I very quickly began to realize that obesity is a multi-factorial issue closely connected to elements of psychology, sociology/socioeconomics, geography, and much more. It’s just not as simple as move more, eat less - although I wish it was. - The fact that obesity is multi-factorial is NOT an endorsement of obesity. Too often the multi-factorial nature of obesity is conflated with the “healthy at any size movement”. As I have said before, and I will say it again here, that spits in the face of good science. Obesity is NOT healthy, nor will it ever be. But if our goal is to help each other actualize and live healthy, long lives, we’ve got to find a place for creative discourse beyond just arguing about whether healthy at any size is legit or what factors drive obesity. - We have to talk hard solutions, because, obesity and the associative comorbidities are a legit problem. Now more so than ever. We can’t let the discussion devolve into a discussion of who does or does not have “privilege”, nor can we reduce it to “you are lazy, move less, eat more”. We’ve got to be better. - No matter who you are, or what you have access too, we all have some level of control and agency that SHOULD equate to the ability to make progress on our health, no matter how small that may be. As a community, the health and fitness space should stop this unnecessarily polar dialogue of “you are fat and it’s all your fault” vs. “I am overweight and there is nothing I can do”. That’s a narrative that hasn’t gotten us very far. - We need to advance a solution-oriented discussion about the behaviors we all have access to that can help us live healthier lives. 😭 Creatives are pros at ruminating on why they lost a freelance job. Can I get an AMEN? 🙌 Here are a few tips on why your potential client didn’t hire you that will help you go from bummed to EMPOWERED. REASON: The client didn’t feel that your services were worth the price. SOLUTION: With each client inquiry, convey exactly why your services offer distinct value that solves their immediate problems. REASON: The client was more interested in another creative’s proposal. SOLUTION: Reassess your pricing, quality of work, communication tone, and credibility. REASON: The client “settled” with another creative bc your pricing was too high. (The ‘ol - oh we just hired our nephew because he’d do it for free!) SOLUTION: Revisit your pricing, but seriously keep in mind that the client might have just settled bc they didn’t need your level of quality or weren’t convinced that they did. REASON: The client shifted the vision and you no longer fit into the equation. SOLUTION: Follow up and show excitement about future projects together!
