Today is the last day of Shark Week. Montauks relationship with sharks is long and storied, whether that be historical, mythological, or somewhere in-between. In 2016, Ocearch discovered the first great white nursery in the North Atlantic off the coast of Montauk, not far from the Montauk Lighthouse. Robert Shaws Quint is loosely based on Montauker Frank Mundus; in Jaws, he mentions he caught a 16-footer off of Montauk. In June, Coronavirus be damned, the 50th Annual Shark Tournament was held. . Pictured here is Parker. Parker and his dad Captain Ron caught this 220lb mako shark a couple weeks ago. He was yummy. Kinda tasted like swordfish. #DidYouKnow Hammerhead sharks can get a suntan just like us humans? It’s true! A study conducted by the CSULB lab in California revealed that scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) have the ability to darken in color (from a light tan to a dark brown) when exposed to solar radiation. In the wild, pups are lighter in color because they take refuge in the murky waters of the bay in avoidance of getting eaten by other adult sharks. Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan. The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised. The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012. They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. Despite having had some incredible shark encounters around the world (see previous post), I have also witnessed the perils these animals face. #Sharkweek shouldn’t end without talking about the millions of sharks killed every year. Targeted and bycatch shark fisheries around the world are putting so many shark species at risk of extinction. Quantifying the scale of the problem is difficult, however estimates range from 73 to over 200 million sharks every year mostly driven by the demand for shark fins exported to Southeast Asia. We must not however, vilify the fishermen. Most of them do not enjoy spending weeks away from their family, they do not enjoy living on cramped boats in dangerous seas, and they don’t enjoy killing sharks! Instead, for them it is a way to earn money to pay for food for their family and send their children to school. The onus lies with those who have a choice; those who have the option to buy shark fin soup, or shark meat, or seafood from unsustainable fisheries and do. The issue is not limited to south East Asia either. You can easily find shark meat on the menu in many European nations and over in the USA, nearly 40,000 metric tonnes of sharks are landed each year. It was scenes like these that drove me to launch the @fishfreefebruary campaign. You may not be eating shark yourself, but can you be sure the tinned tuna or swordfish steak you’re eating hasn’t resulted in countless sharks caught and killed as bycatch? #fishfreefebruary - @s.hilbourne on Instagram

It’s time to celebrate, Florida is officially the 15th state to ban the shark fin trade! The Kristin Jacobs Ocean Conservation Act (SB680) is now law in the Sunshine State, what will soon be known as the previous hub of the fin trade for the United States. This was no easy feat, to say the least, 2 years of sweat, tears and a couple drops of blood. The journey was filled with tough hurdles and strong opposition, there was not a single easy day in this campaign. But all of us persisted and with this we have proven, once again, that we can succeed if we persist. When we started this campaign we were told that it couldn’t be done in Florida, that there was no point in trying. Well, sometimes it is the toughest fights we have to tackle, just because they usually are the most important ones. When we put our collective power behind an effort, we can do the (nearly) impossible.⠀ ⠀ We cannot thank our Allies enough, you spoke up for sharks every single time we said go! 🦈 Pregnant Tagged Shark Recaught by Texas Anglers 🦈 Why does Texas have so many sharks? Citizen Scientists are helping the @sportfishcenter find out! On July 12, 2019, Nick Fuller caught, tagged, and released a Lemon Shark as part of the Texas Shark Rodeo. The visible bite marks on the animal are indicative of mating behavior. Lemon Sharks gestate for about a year and tend to pup from spring to late summer. Fast forward to August 21, 2020, Paul Odabashian recaptured the same shark and the @sportfishcenter was very excited to see the animal was visibly heavier. Evidence like this suggests Texas might provide critical mating and pupping grounds for these animals. THANK YOU to all the Citizen Scientists and angling partners! #SOSGalápagos Update: The Chinese fishing fleet that has been occupying waters just outside the Galápagos Islands since July is still in the area. The story of Hope the Whale Shark, whose GPS tracker last pinged in the same area of the vessels (believed to have been captured by the fleet) has highlighted the dire threats that not only these endangered species face, but all marine animals. What chance do they have to escape a 248 strong industrial fishing vessels. This morning @sharkgirlmadison spoke with the Galápagos Whale Shark Project who tagged Hope, and they reported that another 3 whale sharks have gone missing since Hope. We thought we would share this post, to show the harrowing reality that these sharks face. In 2014, Hong Kong Based organisation WildLifeRisk discovered a whale shark factory in China, said to process up to 600 whale sharks each year. This three-year long investigation found that the factory was processing the sharks In a statement to Business Insider, WildLifeRisk reported that: The whale shark skins are sold as leather into the bag trade. Whale shark lips, stomach and flesh go to the restaurant trade as food. However, the money-maker is the concentrated oil in the shark’s liver (‘squalene’) which is used for skin care products and lipstick, as well as Omega-3 health supplements. The supplements are sold internationally in contravention of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). Basking sharks and great white sharks are also being processed at the factory. There’s evidence the same whale sharks seen off the North West of Australia area being caught. Undercover footage and audio recordings obtained by WildLifeRisk reveal that migratory whale sharks present in Australian waters are being caught off the coast of China in the South China Sea, and also further afield in the Pacific – specifically in waters of the Philippines, Indonesia and even as far away as Mexico.
