I’m SICK of having to fight for the basic rights in life, and having to defend our rights because the general public refuse to see what’s happening or think nothing’s wrong because they are unaffected. WE have been fighting against Injustices in this world longer than most people even dare realize. The same people that try to take away our rights, the current administration that has tried to roll back our rights and completely obliterated the rights to our transgender community. These same people that complain that putting a mask on their face is somehow infringing their “rights” Then turnaround an actively take away peoples ACTUAL rights. The right to health care, the right to marry, the right to serve in the military, the right to choose or even using the damn bathroom! What the fuck is going on with this world and with people!? #MaudeCallen, known as the “Angel in Twilight,” provided medical care to poor and desperate people in need. Born in Florida in 1898, she was orphaned as a young girl with 12 sisters. Callen went to live with her uncle, who numbered among the country’s earliest Black medical doctors. She learned techniques from him and studied at Florida A&M University and the Georgia Infirmary in Savannah. Callen later moved to Pineville in the early 1920s as a medical missionary and remained the health care provider for the area’s residents for many years. She operated a community clinic out of her home, which was located miles from any hospital. Callen provided in-home services to “an area of some 400 square miles veined with muddy roads.” She often served as a “doctor, dietician, psychologist, bail-goer and friend” to thousands of desperately poor patients. It is estimated she delivered between 600 and 800 babies in her years of practice. She also devoted time to teaching other women the skills of being a #midwife. Callen received an honorary degree in 1989 from the Medical University of South Carolina. A scholarship was also established at the college of nursing in her name. - @black.archive on Instagram

The women pictured in yesterday’s trivia question were students in the cooking program at the David Hale Fanning Trade School. Originally known as the Worcester Girls Trade School, the school opened in 1911 at 2 State Street and offered classes in power machine operating, dressmaking, and millinery. At that time, many girls between the ages of 14 and 16 dropped out of school to join the workforce, only to see their opportunities curtailed by their lack of industrial skills. In the words of its second director, Helen Hildreth, the Trade School was intended to provide girls with technical training, thus securing “the proper status of woman in the working world.” When a fire destroyed the school building in 1919, the school relocated to 24 Chatham Street. David Hale Fanning, the founder of the Royal Worcester Corset Company, offered $100,000 for the new school building under the condition that it be renamed in his honor. Many additional training programs were added over the years, reflecting the expansion of women’s occupations. New programs in the 1920s included Cooking as a Trade, Cafeteria/Tea Room Service, Printing, and Scientific Care of Hair and Skin. In the 1960s, students could receive training as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Surgical Technician, and Dental Assistant. Information Processing courses were added in the 1980s. “Properties of the Hammer”, a self portrait developed in a darkroom by me in 1993. I was 19 years old, and I knew there was something deeply rotten in the area of Texas I grew up in. Insidious behavior and thoughts can be concealed by Southern pleasantries, the pulpits of churches, and suburban attics. I didn’t understand what white supremacy was in 1993, but I knew there was something invisible operating on my body. I could feel that much. My folks never sat me down to talk about it, but I was starting to piece something together from observing their relationships with white folks over the years. I was never called nigger to my face (like my parents were), but you don’t have to be. There’s a zillion other ways to be called that. I was beginning to get that too. I was naive then and running on pure intuition. My need to express some growing unease came out in my pencil, brush, or camera whether I wanted it to or not.
