#LESSONSINGASLIGHTING . I was reminded of this Daily Mail hit piece today in a post I shared on Facebook. . I had written an advice column responding to a mother concerned that her daughter’s grandfather was openly bribing her to get hugs (“I’ll blow some more bubbles with you if you give me a hug.”) . I reinforced the mother’s right to feel dismayed by this, and suggested to her that this is where women’s hesitation to speak up about predatory behaviour comes from - the lessons we are taught as children (particularly girls) to accept men’s attention and bribery for affection, even when it makes us feel weird. . So of course the conservative press trashed me as an hysterical man-hater trying to demonise “loving grandfathers” as rapists and child abusers. (Guess what?! Some of them are!) . Following on from my earlier post about disingenuous right wing tactics to pretend some allegiance to “sisterhood” when it suits them, this is another thing the right does well: it pretends to care about notions like “respect” and “kindness” and even “protection”, but these are just pretty sounding weapons used in the fight to maintain the status quo. . In reality, the same people who love to invoke the rights of children when it means shielding them from learning about progressive social justice have no problem abandoning them when it comes to preserving male entitlement and patriarchy. . It’s really vital that we become trained in seeing these tactics for what they are - deliberate attempts to misdirect and undermine movements trying to bring change to the world. It’s so easy to discredit consent training (and maintain men’s rights to women’s bodies) when you can paint the people advocating for it as hysterical wowsers. It’s gaslighting and it’s effective, so we have to refuse to be distracted by it. . A Florida woman who raised thousands of dollars for the families of three murdered men is accused of stealing the money and going on a spending spree, police said. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Amanda Brown, 32, created a GoFundMe page in the names of Brandon Rollins, Damion Tillman and Keven Springfield, a group of friends who were slain in July while on a fishing trip in Frostproof, a small town about 70 miles southwest of Orlando. I cannot believe it’s been 2 years since the world lost J Gold. He was iconic. He was LA. He was gold.💛In case u don’t know the story behind this illustration /print, here it is...I had just judged the @kcrwgoodfood pie contest with him a few months before and I psyched myself up to go introduce myself to him at the very end (there are a lot of judges and our categories didn’t overlap)and it went better than I imagined. When I started to explain who I was, he cut me off and said he already knew, had a tote bag I designed for KCRW and that he liked my art (say whaaaat?!)😱. He complimented me on a passion project I did the year before, where I illustrated highlights from episodes of Good Food, but then he gave me this kinda sad, pouty face and said he noticed that his restaurant reviews weren’t included in any of the illustrations. OOPS! That WAS true, but like, there were more timeless things to illustrate each week than a restaurant review. He said “I get it” but he was still kinda waiting to see me draw something he said on air. I excitedly and immediately promised him that I’d draw him something special and it’d be cool! He acted like that would make up for it and said he’d like that. Then I asked for a photo and made a joke about wishing I had on suspenders, to pull out and snap for the photo. He didn’t skip a beat and said I could pull his out for the photo, if I wanted. 😂 I was into it (swipe to see the photo)! When I heard the news of his passing I thought of what I promised him, then spent the next day going through episodes of Good Food from 2017 and listened to ALL his reviews. I pulled out the lines I thought he’d like and created this tribute illustration. I hate that I didn’t get to make this before, so he could see it and hopefully be stoked, but better late than never. And this wasn’t gonna be a print until all of you on IG asked for it because you wanted a little piece of him in your homes. So thank you, that means a lot. Joehoe 🙋🏽♀️ hier ben ik weer! I know, ik ben mega afwezig geweest op social media 🙄. De afgelopen weken heb ik lekker wat van de zomer genoten ☀️ én ik ben druk met alle voorbereidingen op een flinke verbouwing 🛠 mijn vriend en ik krijgen binnenkort de sleutel van ons nieuwe huis 🏡. Dus ben ik al flink aan het ontwerpen geslagen voor het interieur, zodat we straks meteen kunnen beginnen. Klein weetje💡ik heb eigenlijk interieur vormgeving gestudeerd. Ik begon met een mbo opleiding van 4 jaar en ging daarna naar een Hogeschool in Mechelen om verder te gaan met Interieur & meubel ontwerp. Nadat ik klaar was met studeren ben ik verder gegaan met @vief_jewelry en heb ik daarnaast nog eventjes bij een interieur bedrijf gewerkt, maar dit bleek toch niets voor mij 😅 en besloot ik mezelf fulltime op @vief_jewelry te storten 🦸🏽♀️. Heel soms doe ik nog wat kleine interieur opdrachten maar liever niet te veel. Voor ons nieuwe (oude) huis ben ik wel alles zelf aan het ontwerpen, de keuken, badkamer, eigenlijk alles 🤩. Zo komt mijn interieur achtergrond toch wel van pas! Of ik destijds de verkeerde opleiding heb gekozen? Dat denk ik niet. Ik vond beide opleidingen geweldig en die hebben me gemaakt tot wie ik ben. You would go through your phone, scroll through #Instagram, see these beautiful girls with these beautiful bodies, and they are made to look so perfect. And then you look at yourself in the mirror, and you don’t feel the same. But we were so distracted by multiple things that we weren’t fixated on social media and how people are presented. But now, all we have to stay connected is our phones. We have personal interaction with our families because we’re stuck with them but seeing friends, you have to FaceTime or text. And I feel like now we are so fixated on our phones because that’s all we have. And it’s so prevalent because we look for entertainment as well as connection with people.” .
