I think that ACAB is such a stupid word to say. Because you cant put all of them in one Box. You can hate the guilty cops, but you cant offend and hurt the innocent ones. 80% of them are innocent humans with a good heart. And cops are scared too. 🤑🔥 Conscious consumerism is something that I used to speak a lot more about. I used to promote ethical brands, I curated an ethical directory on my old blog + would be actively seeking out more conscious brands to work with or shop from myself. Im not here to get in the way of anybody making the change from H&M to a more ethically-aware brand (please do that if you can, we should try our best to boycott billionaire brands) but look, after a lot of learning + coming to terms with the extent of the climate crisis and realising that in all honesty, I dont have a whole lot of hope left - that aint the solution. We cannot buy ourselves out of this mess. Swapping from oat milk to pea milk because Oatly decided to sell some shares to a company that seems completely misaligned with their values, isnt exactly a radical action. It makes me feel better, sure, but it doesnt out-weigh the real crux of the matter. Re: Oatly - like I saw @ajabarber say, its like her taking money from a fossil-fuel company just because she knows it will improve her own personal livelihood. Green capitalism (the idea that we can resolve environmental issues by continuing to focus on the economic market) is a way of making us feel like we have some resemblance of control over things. Hey, if I just buy clothes made from organic cotton instead of the usual stuff, then Bobs your uncle, right? Radical action is taking that head-on + looking at the root of the issues. Its voting out Donald Trump because he doesnt believe in science. Its taking to the streets with direct-action because its a tactic proven successful for social change. Its creating the world you want to see, without permission (mutual-aid groups during the pandemic, Im looking at you 😍!). Its like doing all of that at the same time, if you can. By all means, swap your milk brands but please, please dont stop there. #LESSONSINGASLIGHTING . I was reminded of this Daily Mail hit piece today in a post I shared on Facebook. . I had written an advice column responding to a mother concerned that her daughter’s grandfather was openly bribing her to get hugs (“I’ll blow some more bubbles with you if you give me a hug.”) . I reinforced the mother’s right to feel dismayed by this, and suggested to her that this is where women’s hesitation to speak up about predatory behaviour comes from - the lessons we are taught as children (particularly girls) to accept men’s attention and bribery for affection, even when it makes us feel weird. . So of course the conservative press trashed me as an hysterical man-hater trying to demonise “loving grandfathers” as rapists and child abusers. (Guess what?! Some of them are!) . Following on from my earlier post about disingenuous right wing tactics to pretend some allegiance to “sisterhood” when it suits them, this is another thing the right does well: it pretends to care about notions like “respect” and “kindness” and even “protection”, but these are just pretty sounding weapons used in the fight to maintain the status quo. . In reality, the same people who love to invoke the rights of children when it means shielding them from learning about progressive social justice have no problem abandoning them when it comes to preserving male entitlement and patriarchy. . It’s really vital that we become trained in seeing these tactics for what they are - deliberate attempts to misdirect and undermine movements trying to bring change to the world. It’s so easy to discredit consent training (and maintain men’s rights to women’s bodies) when you can paint the people advocating for it as hysterical wowsers. It’s gaslighting and it’s effective, so we have to refuse to be distracted by it. . I made a lot of big plans this year when we found out this little guy was on the way. One of those was closing the business I spent 15 years building. I carefully crafted that plan to impact as few clients as possible and to finish just as this guy made his big debut. Then Covid19 happened and all the plans came crashing down in a matter of days. I still have clients scattered through fall when I planned to be back to working full time in a whole other industry, I lost my other job I loved dearly. We found out we’d have to deliver our little man early due to health concerns...right in the middle of our projected peak pandemic. For those struggling and my amazing clients grieving their wedding plans- sometimes there’s beauty in the chaos. I had to “lean into it” and actually put into practice all the positive thinking I always claimed to follow while in reality I controlled and fought any amount of chaos so everything could be as smooth as can be and worried about everything all the time. There is beauty in the chaos and peace in letting go. For me I’m learning to be grateful to all of this. It brought 6 pounds 7 ounces of joy into our lives at a time where we have no choice but to huddle together and spend all the time in the world protecting him and watching him grow. There’s no deadline, no new job start on the horizon-just us. September is #nicuawarenessmonth so I wanted to share about the lead up to the 3 and 4 weeks Sam and Zelda spent in the NICU. We were shocked to find out that we were having twins, but the idea of holding two babies in my arms at birth was something I dreamed of doing. Every twin pregnancy is high risk (especially with my history of needing bedrest) so we knew we had to be prepared for a likely NICU stay. At 31 weeks pregnant, I found out that I had gestational diabetes AND that Baby B (Zelda) was IUGR. So after a myriad of appointments and an eventual failed BPP scan and stress test at 32 weeks, I was sent to the hospital for a possible c-section. Things stabilized overnight, but I contracted the flu! So I spent 8 days in the hospital hoping and praying to keep these babies inside while living in isolation. Thankfully, my mom had flown in the week before so she was there to help Michael with the girls at home (who were only 21 months and 3.25 years old at the time). After my discharge, I was home for 5 days before returning back to the hospital for the real delivery. That morning both Baby A (Sam) and Baby B (Zelda) failed their BPP scans so straight to the hospital I went. Here I am meeting Sam (5lbs - top photo) and Zelda (3.5 lbs - bottom photo) for the first time, about 3.5 hours after they were born. Of course I never got the experience of holding the babies together in my arms after birth since they were immediately whisked away to be put on oxygen. I would have to wait a few weeks before getting to feel the joy of holding two newborns at once! Our time in the NICU feels like a distant memory now that it has been 2.5 years; however, I’ll never forget what it felt like to have my heart split in half with two toddlers at home and two preemies in the hospital (and then it was even harder once Sam was discharged 5 days before Zelda). Should Carotid Holds be banned by Law Enforcement? •••••••••••••••••• Recently the Governor is California @gavinnewsom has banned use of carotid holds by Law Enforcement because it was deemed “unsafe” and “deadly”. Based on my years of training Brazilian Jiu jitsu and knowledge of human anatomy I would like to break down how they work. . Physiology of Carotid Holds: The vascular structures targeted by the technique are the internal carotid artery (ICA) and the carotid sinus. The carotid sinus has pressure receptors that maintain blood pressure and when there is an external compression the response of the body is to reduce blood flow. For loss of consciousness to occur the structure need to be compressed enough to decrease cerebral blood flow. 1️⃣Cerebral hypoxia or going to sleep occurs when the cerebral blood flow velocity dropped below 50% from baseline on both the right and left carotid artery. 2️⃣The compression force required to compress the carotid arteries was at least 100mmHg. An important note is that more than 100mmHg did not cause a faster response in which the subject was rendered unconscious. 3️⃣The average time for unconsciousness following the vascular constraint was held for 9-10 seconds (9.5 +/- 0.4 seconds). . ❗️Important safety note: brain damage can occur when the body does not have oxygen for 3 minutes. . Clearly if brain damage can occur this is unsafe, right? That means you need to maintain the hold for over 2.5 minutes after the opponent is already unconscious. As someone who has done grappling you would know to maintain a near maximum contraction of your arms for just 30 seconds is extremely difficult! . In my opinion this act by the governor is a great disservice to Law Enforcement. In my opinion a carotid hold is an excellent method of restraining an unwilling opponent as safe as possible. I feel that Law Enforcement should be trained on the proper method of executing this technique. . Reference: 1️⃣ Mitchell JR, Roach DR, et al. Bought my fruits and veggies and went to the other store. Even bought a knife just as protection. He followed me there. As I left the store holding the knife in my hand, I crossed the road and in the middle of the road he asked me “do you want to talk” to which I yelled “NO LEAVE ME ALONE!” When there were people around. And he left, so I thought. So I was walking towards my home and the lane was empty. He came on his bike and I saw him through my peripheral vision and my heart was palpitating too fast. Because I thought now this is where he is going to run his bike into me rape me and muder me and no one would know. Anxiety Zindabad! Also thought this I was talking to my boyfriend and annika too. Another TQ save. This case was sent to us from a colleague @stryker2020p . The patient punched a glass window and sustained a large laceration. Initially he presented to the ER and the physician tried to control bleeding with hemostats. This proved in effective. But luckily our colleague was present to quickly apply a tourniquet and then transport/transfer him to a local trauma center for surgical intervention. Tips: Hemostats work well for clamping vessels but it can be extremely difficult or impossible if you cannot adequately visualize the vessel. This requires you to have PROXIMAL control for arterial hemorrhage. You can have a tourniquet to control the hemorrhage or you can surgically expose the vessel more Proximal away from the area of trauma to have a clean field to work.
