Now on view:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Topografía del Borrado, a solo show by Gabriela Bettini⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In her new series of works, Gabriela Bettini explores the concept of nature on which the mimetic make-believe habitats of natural-history dioramas are based. Habitat dioramas enter into an illusionary play with three-dimensional objects in the foreground that merge with painted scenes in the background. Objectivity and imagination, scientific insight and artistic creativity interlock in these nature scene replicas to produce a lifelike impression of pristine nature. Although committed to scientific realism, they illustrate an idyllic nature that never existed as such. In the late 19th and early 20th century, natural history museums in the USA and Europe turned to this medium that nonchalantly merged science and art and promised a didactic impetus with its wide popularity and its graphic descriptiveness. Many institutions provided hunters, taxidermists, landscape painters, set designers, and electricians with lavish means to conduct costly expeditions and realize the elaborate sceneries. Dioramas, often described as «windows on nature» , are in fact very material constructions. LOBO Mixed media on canvas 350x200cm Gonzalo Borondo April - May 2020, Segovia. The artwork expresses the interest in Nature which has till now been our most abused companion and which in this period of quarantine has proved to be the most valuable asset, even though it itself has condemned us to walk away from the capture of physical space. The dispute always talks about the re-appropriation of the territories, an eternal arm-wrestling between Nature and mans desire to control it. Perhaps for a moment it was believed possible to reverse the natural dynamics, to the point that today it seems shocking to observe the absence of man from the streets and the presence of vegetation and local creatures in parks and even in architecture. So even the ordinary have become extraordinary and that is why the extraordinary is represented as everyday. The dog, which became a symbol of freedom in this period, is actually the living proof of mans plane to manipulate not only space but also the species. The domestication of nature is illusory, now perhaps we are beginning to understand that we too live in captivity because of her. According to the artist, everything is part of the same circle. This painting is also a tribute to the memory of the dog that has accompanied the artist since adolescence. — Gonzalo Borondo (Born 1989) Linking figurative painting and installations with their physical and psychological contexts, Gonzalo Borondo’s work is led by the will to confront the human in his symbolic complexities.The systematic questioning of his direct environment probably started with the religious artworks that filled his childhood house in Segovia, and the cultural legacy that his father, a restorer of works of art, unwillingly imposed on him. I thought the old jetty was a knock out with a super structure and colours, the hopeful fisherman atop - it just had to be painted … The only thing was that the tug had to be moved up river just a touch, but I have the artist’s licence!
