~ How global warming works ~ The second two images below are two infrared pictures of 10 foot 1 inch PVC pipes just after sunset. One is placed vertical and the other is horizontal, parallel to the unobstructed night sky. The vertical PVC pipe is 87.4F. The horizontal PVC pipe is 75.4F. The horizontal PVC pipe cooled at a faster rate because it was able to lose thermal energy via emitting infrared light into the sky. Night Sky Cooling This is also how the earth loses thermal energy via emitting infrared light into the sky. The night before I stayed up all night taking measurements. Usually there will a 7 to 10 degree difference between the roof temperature and ambient temperature do to Night Sky Cooling but early Thursday morning temperatures were only 1 to 2 degrees different. At some points the night temperature actually went up 3 to 4 degrees. As we can see in the first beautiful sunrise picture taken Thursday morning the sky was obstructed by clouds and smoke from nearby wildfires. This greatly reduced the amount of cooling vie emitting infrared light into the sky. In the same way that excessive amounts CO2 reduces the Earths ability to cool. Cinematographer Julian Schmidt (@julian_dop) on capturing a surreal California desert with ZEISS CP.3s for Sunshine Periphery, a short film. Mainly, our film is set in vast and empty landscapes and we wanted to give the idea that our character is lost in his surroundings. The 28mm really gave me the control to capture the wide landscape while being very flexible with our protagonist. He could start from a wide shot and end up in a very close and intimate position. Blackbird’s last service was on March 14, 2020. Many memories will carry me through this tough decision. That was the first storefront lease that we signed in a neighborhood that had nothing. And look at the new landscape. We are proud of being trailblazers on the east side of the expressway. We laid the groundwork for many. Not just for new restaurants but for real estate and office buildings. That’s where the four of us uncommon men came together and built something special. Something with their own hands. This can’t be recreated. The power of a dream can’t be duplicated. At first, we thought this was a phenomenon. This white gypsum board box with no color exploded with genuine care and hospitality and a menu that forged new boundaries for market-fresh. We couldn’t have built this without the help of Thomas Schlesser, who took a chance on us early on. Many people crossed the threshold and we were taken back by their notoriety, no reason to add the names because we would never publicize them anyway. However, I do enjoy sharing one story. Bono and The Edge came to celebrate the birthday of one of their staff members and quietly took over the restaurant. Whoever was dining that evening experienced the magical delight of Bono and the Edge singing happy birthday to a young lady who worked with them. They interacted and sat with other guests, exchanged conversations and even dined around at tables, switching Bono’s signature sunglasses with strangers. When we started off on this journey, we never imagined the unforeseen opportunities and accolades, the countless beard nominations, the awards, the articles, the reviews, 8 years straight of Michelin stars has overpowered any of the dreams that we ever could have imagined. It was easy in the beginning. We had a will to succeed with Chef Paul Kahan in the kitchen, Rick Diarmit behind the bar, Eduard Seitan waiting tables and me as your host. It seemed natural that this restaurant had a chance because we covered all corners. So this is nice. A lady named Sharon emailed me back between lockdowns telling me about her journey through breast cancer treatment, and how the @goodweekendmag @benshewry cover was so moving for her, and if i’d consider selling her a print of it. I expected her to say a little 8x10 or something, but noooope she wanted it big. I checked with Ben first to see if he was alright with it, and we sent it off. Finally arrived back from @unitedmeasures with a beautiful print from @thirdsfineartprinting and i gotta say, it looks absolutely bad ass. Such a poignant document of a very specific moment in time. A year ago I took a break from filming pro athletes and headed to a farm outside Sutherland with my dad. We spent the weekend doing a landscape and Astro photography workshop. Looking back on these photos makes me think about how much happens in a single year. It also really makes me long for the outdoors, for an adventure, for clean, fresh air. Right now we need to stay patient and allow this all to pass, and although it feels like it’s getting harder and harder, it’s important to realize that it will, in fact, pass and we will get to go on crazy adventures again. Growing up we visited family in Beirut, some of whom still reside there. The recent explosion and current devastation there could not be more tragic and fundamentally sad, on so many levels. But Lebanon and her people have a rich heritage, a creative spirit and a true love of all that is good in life. The same qualities are evident in Villa Chams, a contemporary residence in Baalbek -- a complex of ancient Roman ruins also known as Heliopolis, the “city of the sun.” This stunning structure is seamlessly integrated into muted colors and the sloping terrain of a landscape of olives trees, prickly pears, and red rocks. A modern colonnade, inspired by the ruins of Temple of Bacchus echoes the architecture of antiquity in contemporary form. Similarly traditional Roman baths are reimagined as the soulful core of the house in the form of an underground river (which is really a pool) set amidst the colonnade. Materials also speak to the dialogue between past and present, carefully selected for their changing characteristics when standing the natural wear of time. Villa Chams (which means “sun” in Arabic), is a glowing example of how architecture makes manifest the poetic sensibility of this resilient culture, and that while the human spirit may be dampened by tragedy, it will always rise like a phoenix to triumph over adversity with beauty. #architecture #design #beirut #lebanon 📷 Gerges Architects - @andrekikoski on Instagram

Grandpa Ray died in here, he was a butcher at Vons in San Bernardino over the mountain from his dez trailer for 30 years, alcoholic. Avoided visiting the whole four years I lived a few towns over. But did on my way out of Mojave. My dad was raised in an abusive trailer in Vallejo and ran away at 14 to hop trains cross country to find his older runaway sister, my Aunt Ranita. Pop joined military to become a jet mechanic, and after two tours Marine in Vietnam as a sharpshooter, gnar PTSD, remorse and retreat from misguided anger, devotion remainder of his life (died at 42) to getting degrees to counsel traumatized vets. When I finally saw this craphole I wrote to my mom to thank her and Pop for bringing our fam so far in life. She comes from trauma too but won’t say here, point is my parents figured how to leave violence behind. I never got raised voices, spank, or grounding, was supported through college, which my mom funded by working at USC in admin so I could go free, supported my life as an artist kid and later a queer rebellious weirdo. Lot of media Rn about ending la chancla culture, stoked on it; my dad’s trashy father (who I didn’t know) and my lame Grandma Juanita, who flaked and left her sis, my aunt Trinie, to raise him (that why I’m named after her) saw no probs w yelling, spanking, demeaning, turning blind eye, neglecting. May those parenting styles burn down in these fires. Violence never an answer. I’m not into it, and even the civil rights leaders who moved past protests into policy changing in elected official roles, have rejected violence as functional forward movement. Hatred doesn’t work and I stand behind announcing my family legacy learned that the hard way. The chain is broken and no oppressive aggression, crap parenting, and small mind poverty mentality allowed in this house. “Can’t do this can’t do that, shut up and have some respect” thanks Mom and Pop for never uttering. My grandparents all sucked, which I used to lament ashamed, but now I’m just glad I’m ok. I have the gentlest man and kiddo and I’m so grateful to prior sacrifice for enabling that. De origen andalusí, se denominaba también como del Aceituno o de la Serranilla y enlazaba Jerez con Rota y Sanlúcar. Se ubica pared con pared con las bodegas Fundador, entre las calles San Blas y Valderrama, al final de la mítica cuesta de la Chaparra. En la segunda foto, se puede apreciar la posición que ocupaba en la antigua muralla. Actualmente sólo se conserva parte de una de las torres que protegían la antigua muralla, gracias a la recuperación llevada a cabo por las bodegas Fundador. En ella podemos observar una lápida que narra un hecho acaecido en el año 1264, cuando Alfonso X El Sabio entregó este edificio a Beltrán Riquelme, por aquel entonces, alcalde de los jerezanos cristianos. Con ello pretendía dar descanso a sus caballerizas y reconocer el apoyo prestado por las tropas cristianas para expulsar a los almohades de la ciudad. Os invitamos a visitarla, ya que está a escasos minutos de la Catedral, el barrio San Mateo, la Alameda Vieja, el Alcázar y otros tantos puntos importantes de la ciudad. Pero sin duda no hay mejor plan que visitar las bodegas @bodegasfundador y al terminar, pasar a visitar esta antigua puerta de la ciudad. Это когда место/ помещение — неотъемлемая часть перформанса: ни в каком другом месте этот спектакль сыграть нельзя — весь смысл, красота и полнота замысла просто исчезнут. ⠀ Я думаю, что если вовремя не развить привычку слушать себя, можно превратить в такую вот site (или time или age) specific постановку всю свою жизнь: яркие эмоции привязать обязательно к юности, романтику — к свечам, пустынному пляжу или Парижу, острые переживания — к влюбленности, восторг от красоты — к растиражированным видам популярных курортов. Жизнь становится чередой шаблонных поводов, уместных для проявления тех или иных чувств. Живёшь по трафарету: наступил повод — грустишь или радуешься или заставляешь себя чувствовать то, что по случаю полагается. Coral Pink was a product of many nights on the road pairing the soul of the desert and the human condition. Cold beer under the night sky, the absence of light and sound, getting stuck in deep sand. I couldn’t help but feel helpless at times to what was happening in the world, however. When you were able to get service it was filled with fear driven headlines and uncertainty and it really put into perspective how lucky I am to be able to create art to help ease those pressures on people who need an escape. COLOMO|MARFA In 2006 BALLROOM Marfa Gallery Commissioned the the Contemporary Artist Michael Phelan (B. Beaumont, TX) to install a large-scale Sculptural Installation in the Gallery’s Courtyard. Upon his first visit to Marfa to oversee installation, Phelan came across a ‘FOR SALE’ sign in front of of what resembled a former Service Station- uncannily recalling Ed Rucha’s ’Standard Station’ (1966). It was in fact Marfa’s original Mobil Station, and later Colomo General Store. Phelan called the number posted on the sign, and shortly after purchased the property. Not long after signing, with a small crew from the border town of Presidio, Phelan set out to build out what would become COLOMO|MARFA. Today, the 4,000 Sq Ft of Open-Concept Two Bedroom + Two Bath Compound serves as Home to Phelan’s Family- his Wife Melissa Bent and Son Briar Bear. The Home has been featured in numerous Publications- including Conde Nasts Domino Magazines Cool Hunting; the Coffee Table Book ‘Marfa Modern’, Monacelli Press; and Vogue, among others. - @marfamodern on Instagram

Spending the day getting my place ready for the Indian Creek Clinic 😻 I have 20 acres with a little off-the-grid octagonal cabin that Mario and I built almost 10 years ago. I like to add things every couple of years, before the clinic—a composting toilet, outdoor kitchen with gravity-fed water, and wood benches for the bonfire spot have been some of the newest additions. Lori Ryker is principal and founder of @studioryker in Livingston, Montana. “I was really excited to begin to think about how I could design homes that fit within the place but had a very forward-thinking disposition on the land,” Ryker says. One year ago we left our home and set on a journey into the unknown in our RV. Little did we know that our full time traveling RV life would be cut short. We didn’t HAVE to stop traveling, we chose to and sometimes I miss it. We had a lot of dreams and plans and it would have been some amazing adventures. But that’s ok! We can always travel in the future. But now we’re living new adventures that I thought wouldn’t happen for years. We’re building a homestead from scratch, living off grid and truly loving every minute of it, even the tough stuff. We’re still living in the RV but hopefully we’ll start building our Adobe home soon. I’m excited to experience a new adventure each new day. - @roguepreparedness on Instagram

Google Street View scenes - Here are a few more sets for the book. Its taking an incredibly long time and Ive already looked through my entire database of around 40,000 images, twice! Im loving it though because Im finding some real gems that I had completely forgotten about. Through this process, Ive also realised how important it is to me that I involve the community in the book. So many people, from all around the world, have shared their incredible stories with me, which in turn has really helped drive me forward and made me feel less alone with everything. Looking back to some of the amazing places that my assignments have taking me in 2018. In early spring I was in Texas to document some of @5g_studio_collaborative fantastic projects. That gave me an opportunity to visit Marfa located far out in the dessert to experience two of my heros, Donald Judd and Dan Flavin, first hand. Even further out in the desert, you will find the most brilliant installation “Prada Marfa” by @elmgreenanddragsetstudio This “store” is a catalyst for people, from all over the world, to meet, talk, dance, posing, enjoying the setting, the light and each others’ company for hours - in the middle of nowhere - Loved it! .
