🐢Tourism as a game changer for the conservation of sea turtles. 🦕Sea turtles are living fossils that have navigated the world’s oceans from the time of dinosaurs. Unfortunately, All species of sea turtles are threatened with extinction due to anthropogenic threats such as overfishing, bycatch, hunting, infectious disease, pollution, climate change and habitat loss. 😢In Mexico, the exploitation of sea turtles has been a traditional activity among coastal communities for centuries. The rising market demand led to an increase in sea turtle exploitation which reached its peak between the 1950s -1970s when more than 50% of the world’s sea turtle catch occurred in Mexico. ☠️As a result, all sea turtle populations in Mexico collapsed, forcing the Mexican government to declare a total ban on sea turtle fisheries and trade of derived products in 1990. Despite the ban, sea turtles and their eggs are still consumed in illegal acts. 🤝The long-term conservation of species is dependent on local political support as well as wider community support. 🍃The sustainable tourism can generate income and provide employment and at the same time support the conservation efforts. 🙌🏻Turtle hatchling releases can be used to increase public awareness of the threats facing sea turtles and their habitats. It can provide strong economic incentives for wildlife conservation. 🐢Cabo Trek Turtle Release Tour The place we will be going to is located just a few Km out of Cabo San Lucas along the Pacific Ocean, a remote location that offers the opportunity to escape the crowds of Los Cabos and enjoy a nature full immersion experience. -All the tours are guided by marine biologists -The conservation project will ensure a safe and educational learning experience, the usual way of Cabo Trek making learning fun. -The time spent together will allow us to conduct environmental education activities as well as raise awareness of the necessity to protect Nature and the endangered species such as the turtles. -This tour goes from the 1st of September till the 15th of December and will take about 4 hours to complete. 👆🏽You can go to the link in our bio or send us a message for more info - @cabotrek on Instagram

FLORIDA @tannerunderwater making new friends! One day.. I am going to look back on my life and I will remember moments like this. Right now I am taking an intermediate freediving course with @the_oregon_freedive_co and it has been more than anything I could have ever imagined. Two days ago.. I held my breath for nearly 5 minutes, something I didn’t even know I was capable of. And yesterday.. was maybe the coolest day of my life. Our entire group (of amazing and passionate people) were taking turns freediving down the line surrounded by manatees, schools of thousands of fish.. jacks, snapper, sheepshead.. there really is no way to describe it. But it was incredible, to be 25 meters down, with manatees above and schools of fish in every direction. I am just so grateful. Thank you @dansemrad and @talyadavidoff for this experience. [DESLIZA] Los manatíes son una de las tantas especies que se benefician de los #manglares, ya que habitan en aguas costeras poco profundas, donde generalmente también hay agua dulce (dígase, condiciones favorables para los manglares). Los manatíes, además de alimentarse de pasto marino, se alimentan de las hojas del #mangle. En marzo 2020, Julie Piron de @slow_dive_casa_chihuahua se encontró con esta manatí que tenía cicatrices de una herida ocasionada por hélices, y la fotografió, lo que ayudó a @fundemardr a confirmar que esta es la misma manatí a la que le estaban dando seguimiento desde hace mucho tiempo. La llamaron #Remi por las rémoras que tiene pegadas a su cuerpo. In the face of the national crisis, on april 23rd 2020 an austerity decree was established which will result in a 75% cut in the budged allocated to the National Commission for Natural Protected Areas (CONAP). . The CONANP is responsible for managing 182 NPA’s that protect 11.14% of the national terrestrial territory and 22.05% of the marine. They are responsible for maintaining the health of ecosystems, biodiversity and the environmental services they provide. With a 75% cut, around 200 jobs will be lost and guaranteeing the protection of the ANP’s will be almost impossible. High water levels! Many areas of Florida and surrounding states currently experience higher than usual water levels due to hurricanes and increased rainfall. This can give manatees access to areas they usually can not access. Once levels drop, manatees are in danger of getting stuck in areas they can not get out of. Mr Tumnus was rescued in West Sussex around 5 weeks ago, he had a nasty open wound of unknown origin, possibly a bite from another seal. Initially looked after by AlphaPet Veterinary Clinic in Bognor Regis, and then moved on to @rspca_mallydams_wood for ongoing treatment. Say hello to Dim Sum! This little lady joined us 6th September after being rescued from Mawgan Porth, Newquay. She was found malnourished, tired and dehydrated with an ulcer on her eye so the decision was made to rescue her so the team here are able to help her get back to full health. Dim Sum is now in our main hospital, and is slowly putting on weight, she was only 11.5kg when she arrived which is very small! She has also come off treatment for her eye and is taking fish really well which is a positive step in the right direction. She is due her first paddle soon so we will share that with you all! This has been a very difficult year and whilst we are expecting lots of pups this winter, we have suffered severe financial losses making our work even harder. Its Sea Otter Awareness Week! Do you know about the incredible survival story of our endangered Californian sea otters? By the 1930s, most people believed that this subspecies of sea otter had vanished, wiped out by fur traders who coveted its rich pelt. But somehow, a raft of about 50 sea otters survived! 💪 They were tucked away along the remote Big Sur coast, sheltering in a cove at Bixby Creek. In the early 1900s, residents and prospectors began to report sightings of strange, weasel-like animals floating offshore on their backs, including off the Point Sur Lighthouse in Big Sur in 1914. Then, in the 1930s, as State Route 1 was being built, the raft of survivors was officially “discovered,” and the world realized that California, or southern, sea otters weren’t extinct. LOOK WHAT YOU HELPED MAKE HAPPEN! This harbor seal pup was rescued by our team from Scarborough Beach back in early May. He was prematurely born and separated from his mom at around 24-48 hours. Without mom or intervention, he would not have survived. Thankfully, someone reported him to our hotline and we were able to give him the care he needed. Once stable, he was transported to National Marine Life Center. Thanks to their hard work, he was recently released! This pup is one of 39 seals to have come through our center so far this year! While not all have had this ideal outcome, all have received humane, compassionate care, contributing to our knowledge of these animals and their sensitive habitat. MMoME is the only organization providing stranding response in southern and midcoast Maine, is one of only two marine mammal rehab centers in the Northeast, and the only marine mammal triage center on the East Coast. So I guess Im officially a sea turtle veterinarian now!! Ive just finished day 2 of my new job and I am loving it. Its going to be challenging but also so rewarding. A lot of things are different to how Im used to in the UK, and not just because all my patients are sea turtles! 🐢 When youre a vet on a small island, there are a lot of considerations you didn’t need to have before. So Im trying to keep attuned and on top of things as I navigate my new role! Im so excited to pick it all up over the next few weeks so I can really do my absolute best for these guys. And to my vet professionals out there, dont worry, the x-ray tube wasnt so oblique when I actually took the x-ray 😂 Coral came in with floating problems and dehydrated, but after some excellent care from our biologist and some good grub, her buoyancy issues have resolved and she is ready for release! Here’s an otterly awesome story for Sea Otter Awareness Week! In 2017 our Wildlife Response team rescued a sea otter not once but twice, the first time with a hook stuck in his flipper and a second time with a hook stuck in his mouth. He was successfully treated and released back to the ocean with flipper tags so if he was ever spotted again he could be identified. Just this past week he was seen swimming in the bay here in Seward! From the looks of this photo he is staying healthy and hook free! NOAA Fisheries affiliate Vladimir Burkanov discovered an albino fur seal on a recent research trip to the remote island of Tyuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The reddish-gold pup has very light colored eyes and pink flippers. It was born in July 2020. The only information about how rare this sighting is comes from literature published in 1958. At the time, scientist Vic Scheffer reported that the chance of encountering a fur seal with this coloration is 1 in 100,000. Its unclear whether this particular pup will be accepted by the colony and how well it will forage after it is weaned. According to Burkanov, the seal pup looked pretty healthy when he examined it, but animals with albinism typically experience problems with their eyesight. Scientists will look for the animal when they survey the rookery again next June. Although we wrapped on the 2019-2020 cold-stun season two weeks ago, we are continuing to provide medical treatment for sick and injured sea turtles year-round. Our Animal Health and Rescue teams have just admitted two turtles for rehabilitative care! Tulum, a mature Kemp’s ridley, was rescued off the coast of Delaware a few weeks ago. Tulum is currently being treated for symptoms of lethargy and positive buoyancy, which impacts a turtle’s ability to dive and swim. ⛔️ CW: animal death Cape fur seals have historically been over-exploited, with seal hunting eliminating 20 island colonies until legal controls were implemented in 1893. Sealing still continues today in Namibia, with an annual hunt quota of ~80,000 Cape fur seal pups. It’s one of the largest trades of any mammal species out of Africa. Namibia’s sealing is highly controversial, with scientists asking not to be named in NatGeo interviews. The story of sealing highlights sharply divergent interests between animal welfare groups, biologists concerned for the populations long-term survival, fishermen who blame seals for stealing their catch and the Namibian government. Seals aren’t threatened with extinction but the inhumane way pups are killed (by clubbing) and the lack of industry transparency has sparked international outrage. Biologists are also concerned about the unsustainable hunt quota, and that sealers typically targeting larger pups, weakening the populations long-term genetic vigour. However, fishermen perceive seals to be undermining their livelihoods, as they feed on ~2 million tonnes of fish yearly. The Namibian government claims hunting protects fisheries, provides vital jobs and supports the economy. Where do these products go? Around 400,000 pelts (skins) are exported to Turkey for fur coats, oil from blubber to China for Omega-3, and male genitalia to Hong Kong to aid vitality (no scientific validity). Seal meat and ground bone are also sold to international markets. Imports of seal-derived products have been banned in 38 countries. Meet #306, a weanling harbor seal who stranded in Cape Elizabeth earlier this week and has been receiving critical care at our center. She is battling a significant case of pneumonia. Our team also noticed some abnormalities in her flipper movement and mobility, but she was too critical to immediately investigate. At first, her case was evaluated hour by hour. With help from medicated nebulizers, medications, and supportive care, she finally started showing small signs of improvement. Yesterday she was still not strong enough to visit MMoMEs veterinarian for x-rays, so Brunswick Veterinary Clinic (@brunswickvetclinic) kindly offered their equipment. Thanks to the generosity of their wonderful team, she did not have to travel very far to figure out what else was going on-thank you! X-rays were sent to MMoMEs veterinarian, and revealed not only the severity of her pneumonia, but also that she has a dislocated shoulder-ouch! We are unsure of how this happened, but we are keeping her comfortable and continuing treatments. Stay tuned for more updates on this little fighter of a patient! 💙 - @marinemammalsofme on Instagram

Jag har ett speciellt förhållande till sälar. Jag har jobbat många år med att assistera vid sälobduktioner på museet. Och under många år var jag projektledare för ett avelsprogram för gråsäl i Forsmark. Kutarna som föddes i projektet släpptes fria till södra Östersjön. Innan dess frysmärkte vi dem (en slags tatuering på bägge sidorna av kroppen). Projektet avslutades för över tio år sedan men så sent som i våras träffade jag på en av ”mina” frysmärkta sälar, Silvia. Hon var 5 veckor då jag frysmärkte henne med ”S5” och släppte henne till frihet år 2004. Nu är hon 16 år. Jag lärde mig mycket om sälar under tiden jag ansvarade för avelshägnet. Vi hade bara två honor i hägnet men de hade verkligen olika personligheter. Om du ser en frysmärkt säl så lova att höra av dig till mig! Gråsälen kan bli uppemot 40 år så du har fortfarande en chans! Det finns tre sälarter i Östersjön och gråsälen är den största av dem alla. Sälarna var kraftigt hotade pga miljögifter, som gjorde honorna sterila. Antalet gråsälar låg på en miniminivå på 1980-talet, bara några få tusen fanns i hela Östersjön. Vi hade förgiftat Östersjön med gifter som PCB. Åttio år tidigare fanns det runt 100 000 gråsälar och 300 000 vikaresälar! Förutom att honorna blev sterila fick sälarna problem med tandlossning, benförändringar, skador på klor, päls och inre organ. Gråsälen fick verkligen betala ett högt pris för vår användning av kemikalier! På enheten för miljöforskning och övervakning är vi flera som jobbar med sälar. Det är viktigt att vi följer upp deras hälsa och populationsstorlekar. Just nu är det sex personer som jobbar med att obducera och provta de sälar vi får in (gråsäl, vikaresäl och knubbsäl) och två personer jobbar med inventering av grå- knubb- och vikaresäl. Dessutom jobbar jag med miljögifter i sälar. Os drones se tornaram uma importante ferramenta para as atividades de monitoramento, captura, manejo e soltura de peixes-bois-marinhos (Trichechus manatus). A visão aérea que o drone captura fornece uma imagem ampla de toda região, o que facilita a tomada de decisão da equipe de campo nas atividades desenvolvidas. Para centralizar as informações para essa prática, o Centro de Pesquisa e Conservação de Mamíferos Aquáticos (CMA) lançou o “Protocolo do uso de aeronaves não tripuladas (drones) para pesquisa e monitoramento de peixe-boi-marinho e seu habitat”. We are happy to report that grey seal Pippi Longstocking is healing well from the surgeries she underwent last month! While removing her sutures during a sedated procedure last week, our Animal Rescue team measured and weighed Pippi, who has been in our care since she was around 1 month old. They found that she has gained 22kg and grown 21cm since being admitted to the Animal Care and Rescue Center in February! Staff and volunteers have begun reintroducing soft tactile enrichment items to Pippi as her status improves—buoys, dog toys and light shower spray are among her favorites. She also enjoys snacking on ice, which keeps her hydrated and helps to process her cocktail of prescribed medications. She is currently receiving an anti-inflammatory medication and two types of antibiotics; we are planning to phase her off of them in the coming weeks. - @nationalaquarium on Instagram

FWC biologists, law enforcement and partners recently rescued a manatee entangled in fishing line in Key Largo. The 10 foot, 1100-pound female had monofilament fishing line entangled around both of her flippers. Biologists were able to successfully remove the line from the left flipper in the field, but the animal needed surgery to remove the deeply embedded line in the right flipper, so the manatee was transferred to SeaWorld Orlando. Upon recovery the manatee will be released back into the waters surrounding Key Largo. Please do your part to prevent entanglements, carry a container with a lid to store trash or used fishing line (e.g., tennis ball canister or coffee can) and recycle all monofilament fishing line into a monofilament recycling bin. Say hello to Empanada! She joined us on 8th September after being rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue medics from West Cornwall after being spotted without her mum on a busy seal haul out. She was incredibly hungry and began approaching other adult seals. After being monitored for 24 hours by Cornwall Research Group Trust volunteers in the hope that her mum would return, and also receiving a few bites from other seals on the beach, the decision was made to lift her to safety. She was given 24 hours of fluids to rehydrate her and is now being weaned onto fish which she loves! She makes a lot of noise when shes hungry to let the team know, she is still well below birth weight but is gaining weight which is fantastic. Because she is so small she is having a bit of trouble regulating her body temperature so you may see her during your visit under her heat lamp having a little snooze. This has been a very difficult year and whilst we are expecting lots of pups this winter, we have suffered severe financial losses making our work even harder. What a difference 24 hours makes! 💙 Meet #316, a weanling harbor seal rescued from Kennebunkport and admitted to our critical care facility last night. She is extremely underweight for her age, weighing just 25 pounds. For reference, a healthy harbor seal pup weighs about 25 pounds at birth. 😯 Not only is she malnourished, but she also has several small wounds on her body and around her muzzle. At around 08:20 on Monday 10th August, a call was received on the BDMLR hotline regarding a common dolphin in the shallows at Mawgan Creek in the Helford Estuary, near Helston. This is a seal. He’s definitely real. ___ Last week we were on holiday in Cornwall and visited @thecornishsealsanctuary. It was brilliant. Manatee Wildlife Discovery 🤩 • My passion in travel is wildlife. I’ve been lucky enough to experience amazing land & sea encounters 😍. • • Often my trips solely revolve around an animals sightings. The Manatee experience was one of those occasions😊. • I’ve been to Florida 5 times but never visited Walt Disney World 😲. I go for wildlife and there’s some great opportunities here... Welcome to the world of the Manatee ( also known as the sea cow 🐮). • I searched all over the world for these elusive creatures- Brazil, Mexico, Belize & Costa Rica - never had any luck spotting one 😩... One day I read a small article and realised that the best place to see them was in the beautiful Crystal River (North Florida). • • I hired a boat & captain and set off before sunrise one December morning... We had incredible luck there was hundreds of Manatees 🤩😍. • We were the only boat out there for a good couple of hours and had these incredible creatures all to ourselves. • It didn’t take long for me to realise that these animals are incredibly friendly and gentle. They love human interaction, in fact they love to hug you 😬🥰 & really appreciate a tummy tickle (see other pics). • • This lives long in my memory as one of my favourite Wildlife Encounters. 💙 SOBREVIVIENTES 💙 Los días pasan y aún sentimos la partida de la bebé Manati #Milagritos cuyo caso mostró la crudeza del daño que la tenencia y comercio ilegal hace en los animales. Ella pasó a la lista de víctimas de esta terrible práctica que amenaza a muchas especies en el planeta. Recordarán también que durante el operativo de RESCATE, fueron 3 los Manatíes encontrados en la pisgranja de Nauta a las afuera de Iquitos. Junto a Milagros se encontraban #Zara y #Gonzalo, hembra y macho de la misma edad cuyo estado no era de riesgo pero aún así necesitaban ser hidratados y atendidos por profesionales. Gracias al cuidado del personal del #CREA ambos están estables y todo indica que van por buen camino en su recuperación total. Aún deberán estar unos meses más en observación para luego evaluar su liberación. Lamentablemente los manatíes no pueden ser liberados así de fácil, hay mucho trabajo de por medio. This week, our research team fitted Brody, an adult male loggerhead, with a GPS transmitter. This turtle provided the perfect opportunity for scientists to GPS track an adult male loggerheads movements to answer questions about their migration patterns.
