A curious Weddel seal lounges on some sea ice near the top of the Antarctic peninsula. We were lucky on this day, and managed to get our zodiacs in the water and did a few sea ice landings where we were able to walk out on to some free-floating bits of ice, bound for who knows where. The seals were very curious about what we were up to, and some came right over to us, crossing two bits of ice and scrambled up to meet us, coming incredibly close. Not this one though. This one barely cared enough to spare us a glance as our zodiac motors interrupted his nap on the way past - but he was cute. One reason otters are so important to the nearshore marine ecosystem: kelp forests. “Kelp and sea otters go together, explains our Associate Marine Conservation Director, Dick Vander Schaaf. Otters are very active feeders; they need to eat a lot of food, so they can eat a lot of urchins which have been decimating kelp beds in northern California and southern Oregon. Did you know our researchers can listen for dolphin whistles and clicks to learn more about where they go in Galveston Bay? Graduate student Mackenzie Farrell is doing just that by putting hydrophones in the bay. A hydrophone is an underwater microphone that can pick up sounds from at least a mile away. The clicks used for echolocation and whistles used for communication are recorded and displayed in a spectogram (a visual representation of sound). This method of monitoring allows us to expand our knowledge of dolphin activity in areas of the bay where our team cannot often get to by boat. NOAA Fisheries affiliate Vladimir Burkanov discovered an albino fur seal on a recent research trip to the remote island of Tyuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The reddish-gold pup has very light colored eyes and pink flippers. It was born in July 2020. The only information about how rare this sighting is comes from literature published in 1958. At the time, scientist Vic Scheffer reported that the chance of encountering a fur seal with this coloration is 1 in 100,000. Its unclear whether this particular pup will be accepted by the colony and how well it will forage after it is weaned. According to Burkanov, the seal pup looked pretty healthy when he examined it, but animals with albinism typically experience problems with their eyesight. Scientists will look for the animal when they survey the rookery again next June. Southern sea otters like Brook spend most of their time searching for food as they must consume between 20-25% of their body weight every day in order to maintain a normal body temperature. To make searching for prey easier, these otters can dive to 300 feet and remain submerged for up to 90 seconds, capturing critters like sea urchins with their clawed paws before returning to the surface to feed. Its Sea Otter Awareness Week! Do you know about the incredible survival story of our endangered Californian sea otters? By the 1930s, most people believed that this subspecies of sea otter had vanished, wiped out by fur traders who coveted its rich pelt. But somehow, a raft of about 50 sea otters survived! 💪 They were tucked away along the remote Big Sur coast, sheltering in a cove at Bixby Creek. In the early 1900s, residents and prospectors began to report sightings of strange, weasel-like animals floating offshore on their backs, including off the Point Sur Lighthouse in Big Sur in 1914. Then, in the 1930s, as State Route 1 was being built, the raft of survivors was officially “discovered,” and the world realized that California, or southern, sea otters weren’t extinct. Here’s an otterly awesome story for Sea Otter Awareness Week! In 2017 our Wildlife Response team rescued a sea otter not once but twice, the first time with a hook stuck in his flipper and a second time with a hook stuck in his mouth. He was successfully treated and released back to the ocean with flipper tags so if he was ever spotted again he could be identified. Just this past week he was seen swimming in the bay here in Seward! From the looks of this photo he is staying healthy and hook free! Team Update 🍂 As we slowly but steadily march into Autumn, were getting into the rhythm of the new normal. 🍂 This week our Rangers are working across Higher Moors SSSI, with a focus on Fen Restoration. This is hugely important work which results in keeping our wetlands wet and protecting/enhancing our precious water supply. As well as managing succession (effectively preventing the movement from Wetland to Woodland) the work also enhances and encourages biodiversity and creates a healthier more robust water catchment area; benefitting nature but people too. 🍂 Following on from this well also be restarting our Seal Surveys after a break of a few months as a result of Covid. The Team are really excited to be getting out on the water again to see how our Atlantic Grey Seals are doing. We are very happy to announce that Harris has found love again! As you all know, Harris was paired up with Apricot, who sadly passed away recently after reaching an impressive 16 years of age, leaving Harris alone for the first time in four years. Whilst he appeared to have resigned himself back to the bachelor lifestyle, there’s now no female telling him how to make his bed - what a mess! Naturally otters live in pairs and he’s such a good partner that the team wanted him to be able to get a second chance of love. The search began to find Harris a new partner. The team created Harris a dating profile, highlighting all he has to offer, sending it out in the hope of finding his new perfect match. The team were delighted to receive some photos back from an otter looking for love at @sealifescarborough who also recently lost her partner. Pumpkin, a female otter in Scarborough has very recently lost her elderly partner Eric, so the team thought they would be the perfect match. The introduction of Asian short-clawed otters can be nerve racking and difficult to get right. To ensure the best chance of a new pairing getting off on the right foot, it’s best to introduce a new male into a female’s territory so that the male more easily submits to the female on first meeting. For this reason Harris will be moving up to Pumpkin’s enclosure to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible. Harris came to us from the Welsh Mountain Zoo in 2016 after being rejected by his family. There was certainly something about Harris that ticked all the boxes for our female otter Apricot, and after a few days of careful introductions they settled in beautifully together. He was a doting partner to Apricot, so when she passed away a few weeks back he was absolutely lost. @sealifescarborough are real otter experts and the team at the Sanctuary couldn’t be happier that Harris will be cared for by their animal care experts. We will be very sad to see Harris go as he is such a character but we will be keeping in touch regularly to see how him and Pumpkin get on. Of all of the southern African mammals, the Aardvark has always been the most elusive to me with only fleeting glimpses of the rear end of an aardvark being had as it scurries away in to the darkness and out of sight. Once a farmer brought one to me in a trap that had been set to catch caracal and after having a good look at the poor animal, I released it onto a protected area, but this somehow still does not count to me as a decent sighting. One afternoon here @mountcamdeboo, where my family and I are spending the lockdown period, an odd shape ambled up to the fence that is around the house and had a long sniff at my very confused ridgeback. Excitedly we realized it was an aardvark in broad daylight. Barely daring to breathe for fearing of scaring the animal away, we slowly snuck forward to get a clearer view. It soon became evident however that this particular aardvark was extremely relaxed and has subsequently returned on most afternoons. Excitingly, it has allowed me to follow it (we think it is a female) while she goes about checking warthog burrows and searches for ants which she digs out, blasting air into their tunnels before licking them up with vigor. So far her wanderings easily take her over a kilometer from where I originally find her and this give a fascinating insight to her life. I am always very acutely aware to her sensitivities and leave her immediately if I sense that I am disturbing her in any way. Long may she continue with her visits! - @peterianchadwick on Instagram
