The photographs give a glimpse into travel to and through Yellowstone in the early era of automobile travel and “sagebrushing (camping in Yellowstone). At first I was embarrassed to share this— but I changed my mind after receiving uplifting texts, FB messages, emails, and even stories from strangers of their own family connection to the frontlines of WWII. Got a little teary-eyed today on the noon show when I shared a pic. of my grandfather during his service in the war. Got a little tongue tied too.(Oh well) His name was James Kalei Kaholokula. Born in Pauwela, Maui. Part Japanese/ part Hawaiian, and fluent in both languages. He served in the 100th Infantry Battalion — considered the most decorated American unit. He used his language skills as MIS, military intelligence. He went on the join the 442nd Regimental combat team. He was part of the few who survived and returned home to Hawaii after the war. He became a musician, composing mele, like Pua ‘Olena, Keahiwela, Hule’ia, and many many more with our ohana group— Na Kaholokula. I’ve always had an appreciation for those servicemen and women, but I didn’t realize the magnitude of their selfless actions until later in life, listening to the stories my brother @the_baronk (the historian) would share— and interviewing survivors through my career. It’s hard not to be moved knowing they fought for our freedom— while MANY simultaneously fought against prejudice to prove their loyalty to a nation that once looked at them as the enemy. In a time where Hawai’i was in a state of change, it wasn’t easy being Hawaiian either. So that’s the reason behind today’s water works. Is gold a colour or a finish? Way back in time the effect of gold on a surface was achieved using ‘gold leaf’, real gold hammered to a thickness of 5 microns or about 1/8,000mm; that’s thin and it’s why a craftsman can lay it on any object. The technique goes back thousands of years. It wasn’t until the 1930s that cars were first painted gold, but only to special order. It seems that as paint technology became more sophisticated, gold became more over the top as a paint finish. The the arrival of ‘wraps’ as the final layer means that the customer can have as hideous an effect as his lack of taste can dream of. The gold paint on the Summers Brothers World Record holder ‘Goldenrod’ looked at its best under the harsh bright light of the Bonneville Salt Flats. Whilst 1970s gold like the Buick Electra 225 can show the form of that period of American car to perfection, Art Fitzpatrick could always be relied on to illustrate gold Pontiacs in all their splendour while real gold bars show how differently gold reflects light. Gil Alaya was one of the earliest customisers to experiment with metallic paint colours, one of the very few images of his Mercury built for Jonny Rosier show a gold and dark blue paint job which looks very cool. But a Rose Gold wrapped Lambo ……… well! Illustrator Paul Dove has a fine technique for painting something as dramatic as Henry Segrave’s ‘Golden Arrow’ Land Speed record car, and there is no doubt that the robot R2D2 took a shine to C3PO; I’m not sure that gold furniture would be to either’s taste but maybe the simple gold Corvette could have been. #c3po #gilalaya #artfitzpatrick #goldenrodrecords #goldenarrowhead - @peterstevensdesign on Instagram

Decided to share some of self portraits from ages ago where I dressed up in my mom´s cowboy clothes and went to my hometown and took blurry self-portraits of myself (with a Hasselblad and a manual air-release cord). I still to this day find self portraits one of the biggest photo challenges. Its supremely awkward to decide how to present yourself.
