I am blessed to have three beautiful children. Two of them are boys...And knowing one day soon I will have to shatter their innocent world view and tell them that black men get confronted or pulled over at times simply because of the color of their skin and if such a thing were to happen to them they need to know how to behave, makes me sad, angry, and heart broken all at the same time. But this is our reality. These are my sons Jeremiah Mathias and Micah Zane and their lives matter! . I personally never encountered big issues with racism just small and subtle. Stuff like eyes paying more attention to me in the store and I pretend not to notice. And losing a friend because their dad said they couldn’t be friends with me because I was black (I was around 7 or 8 at the time, that one hurt a bit more). But big or small it’s something we shouldn’t have to deal with at all. (didn’t mean to rhyme) . My heart goes out to all the families who have lost loved ones because of police brutality. And I pray for justice, I pray for hearts to soften and be open to truly loving one another and eyes to be opened to the pain and suffering that we as a black community have endured from the biggest to the smallest of situations. I pray for peace for our nation and understanding for individuals who don’t understand what the black community go through and for those who don’t know what #blacklivesmatter is about and try to explain it away. As I dive into the true history of the 4th of July I can’t say that I’m shocked. The Fourth of July commemorates the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted: July 4th 1776. Nearly ONE HUNDRED YEARS before the abolition of slavery. A day we celebrate freedom? ⁣ ⁣ Yet Juneteenth the day that the last slave was set free (true freedom) is not a national holiday. ⁣ ⁣ Something about celebrating this holiday esp. with so much injustice happening, just doesn’t sit right with me. (Just my truth) ⁣ ⁣ I am proud of us for opening our eyes to this injustice and using our voices as much as we have been. I truly do believe we are the generation of change. Because it really does. People die because of it. PEOPLE DIE. Due to mental health. You can share about it publicly. You can do so privately. You can write it on a blog post, in an Instagram caption, in your stories, or keep it in your journal. The thing is, you have to write those thoughts down somewhere so you can revisit them. A day from now, a week from now, a month from now, or even a year from now. You will be surprised at how much the things in your life have changed. Maybe not grand things but I bet you there are some small changes, some small victories that make you go, “I am glad I did not give up.” I saw a quote a long time ago from a mental health account that went something like: people who struggle with suicide do not want to die, they just want the life that they know to end. And this resonated with me in more ways than I like to admit. I used to be an open book about this but I took a step back. There are parts of my life that were/are too triggering & I want to keep them private. I want to focus on the NOW. But I want to share this today because I admire the hard work that is put into this small business. It comes with a tragic story but the mission, the motivation, the intent, the awareness, the fundraising, it is all beautiful. It is not just another t-shirt representing motherhood.
