On day 7 of my recovery, I slipped up. It’s been hard. I know this prolonged lockdown in Australia is necessary to save lives, but there’s no denying the mental health toll it is taking on everyone. I tried to fight my ED. But then I accidentally looked at food labels, and then from there it sort of spiralled out of control. I exercised even though I was experiencing hip pain, I slipped back into some food restriction habits, and all of this triggered some pretty bad impulsive, harmful habits from the BPD side of things (I’m not quite ready to talk about it yet). I know it sounds strange. I had to actively put on workout gear and exercise. I had to actively push through pain. I had to walk to my destination to do those harmful things. I am fully aware of what I’m doing, but at the same time... not? I feel like my life is out of control, this is the only way I can be in control, and I don’t want to stop myself. And after it all passes, it feels horrible, and I feel sick with guilt. Like I failed, and there is no point to it all. But I have not failed. Relapses happen. Recovery is never linear, and I learned something: that working out is probably not the best option for me right now, because it’s too easy for ED to take over me and over-exercise, to the point of injury. And I have, several times in the past two years. If you relapse, you have not failed. It is hard to fight a battle with your own mind. Look after yourself, be gentle with yourself. Nurture every emotion you feel, whether that’s guilt or anger, don’t try to force it all down. Pick yourself up, because tomorrow is another day, another chance. You have not fallen all the way back to day one, this is just part of the process. Your relapses will become fewer, and it WILL become easier. It was never going to be easy. Here is what you are accomplishing: “Short-term, the mother is less likely to have postpartum heamorrhage, less risk of postpartum depression, less chance of anaemia, delayed menses meaning they will have a temporary measure of contraception. The long-term advantages for the mother include less chance of ovarian and breast cancer, less likelihood of suffering from endometriosis, less instances of diabetes and hypertension, and better weight control. For the babies, in the short term, they would have less problems in the GI tract, less instances of respiratory issues such as colds and pneumonia, fewer ear infections, better vision in the long-term, fewer cases of bacterial meningitis, and fewer admissions to the hospital overall. They are also less likely to be absent from work later in life. A huge benefit of breastfeeding is that breastfed babies are less likely to catch or develop infections, and if they do, they are likely to recover more easily. Breastmilk is a live product full of antibodies and other stuff designed to help boost a babys immune system. Because breastmilk is a live substance, it can change according to your babys needs. If a mother is exposed to an infection she will start producing antibodies against it, and pass these on to her baby through her breastmilk. This means that a baby will get a dose of antibodies too, to help them fight off the infection. These antibodies are one of the main reasons why any breastmilk is better than no breastmilk, and why continuing to breastfeed your baby once they are eating solid foods and past the first year continues to offer protection for them over and above nutrients in the milk.
